El Nido Cabinas
Reviewed December 30, 2009

From the moment we arrived we were treated like VIPs. We were given excellent advice on local restaurants, tours/excursions, and massage, and made to feel almost like part of the family for the week we stayed. Playa Chiquita has a beautiful, undeveloped beach. The rainforest along the beach has lots of monkeys, sloths, and birds. There are many restaurants in the area, with an excellent variety of cuisine, both local and interational. There are other conveniences nearby including Internet cafes, grocery stores, pubs, and souvenir/clothing stores, and yet it still feels laid-back and relaxed. I would definitely recommend El Nido Cabinas for anyone who wants a relaxing vacation somewhere off the beaten track. Nice pool and spa too!

I have visited Costa Rica several times. I have stayed on the Pacific side and it's nice and beautiful, but a little too touristy for me. For me it's all about the caribbean side of Costa Rica. It's all about Puerto Viejo. I have stayed at some great places in the Puerto Viejo area but none could even come close to El Nido. El Nido is beautiful. The grounds are incredible. The people running the hotel, Maitreya and the grounds keeper, Alvaro, were fabulous. They completely went out of their way to make sure we were pleased and comfortable. That we were having a good time. The cabina we stayed in was phenomenal. The decor was nice, the cabin itself, from the design to the craftsmanship to the best hot shower in all of Costa Rica was exceptional. It's a short walk to the most beautiful beaches you have ever seen with coral reefs and good snorkeling. Fabulous pool. Near little stores so you can stock up on goodies and keep them in your kitchen. Nearby bicycle rentals, scooter rentals and lots of places to eat including some of the best fresh catches you have ever dined on. I will stay at El Nido again and again and I will recommend it to everyone I know of who is planning on a Costa Rican vacation that's a little bit off the beaten path. Pura Vida.

I have to agree with the reviewer who noted that the place is very new and still growing into itself. The cabinas are beautifully constructed, very large inside, new, clean, very comfortable, pool is very nice- in all a very comfortable place to stay. The new owners are, well, new, and it showed several times during out stay in terms of hospitality and services. In addition, as already noted, the mosquitoes in the room at night are a problem, especially since this is a malaria area. We woke up after our first night covered in a TON of bites (and scratched all night). The second night we stuffed towel under the front door and this seemed to help some. Both mornings we stayed there was also a considerable amount of noise from lawn maintenance (mower and weeder) which woke us up and accompanied us through breakfast.

Great place for kids and family.

The pool is gorgeous when you don't want to go to the beach. The place is cosy, very tidy and well run. I highly recommend it.

Everything is new and very tasteful.

My husband and I spent 9 days staying at El Nido in Playa Chiquita and we could not be more pleased with our honeymoon destination. Gail (owner) and Sylvio were hospitable without being intrusive- available to help plan excursions and friendly but also respectful of our privacy. They scheduled a canopy tour, animal rescue visit, and fishing excursions for us. After our fishing trip, Sylvio cooked us a delicious dinner using the fish we caught! Our cabina was perfect- it was private, quaint, and comfortable with a GREAT shower! All of the amenities one needs while surrounded by beautiful rainforest! Although there is not an ocean view, being dead center in the jungle is quite magical and there is a beach in walking distance. (Most places in this area did not have ocean view) There are a few good restaurants in walking distance yet we recommend renting a car to stay in this area. There is a juice bar and 2 markets across the street which was very convenient. There are pristine beaches to visit a few kilometers south (Punta Uva was our favorite) and it was nice to be able to get back and forth from Puerto Viejo easily. Taxi's are available as well and can be arranged by El Nido. We experienced the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure while staying at El Nido!

We showed up at El Nido late on a rainy day in August and they were quickly able to accommodate four of us - two parents and two teens - in one of their lovely new cabins. These cabins are beatutifully designed in natural wood, with high ceilings, a well equipped spacious kitchen, a California King-sized bed and a futon couch that converts to a bed. Shower and bathrrom were separate - a must for four people. There was a lovely small porch with wooden chairs and a hammock. The place was very clean, modern and spacious. There is a pool and a hot tub in the grounds - though both were not heated. This was fine since it was so hot and humid.
There was a lovely breaskfast included in the rate of $100 per night - eggs, tropical fruit, coffee. toast, juice. Sylvio, a young local man, prepares the breaksfast and speaks perfect English. He knows where everything is locally - like the nearby trail to the beach, where the cacoa farm is located, and which are the best surfing beaches.
The place is managed and owned by Gail (from Vancouver) when were were there. She takes turns with her daughter, Maitreya, to run the place. They are lovely helpful people.
We highly recommend this great new place - it's quiet (if you don't count the early mornng arrival of howler monkeys), beautiful and close to some very nice local restaurants.and the beach. Check it out

Christina

El Nido recently opened for business and shows a few growing pains. The cabinas are gorgeous, tastefully constructed of local woods and roomy -- comfortable space for 3, with a gigantic comfy king bed and a fold-down couch (a bit lumpy but workable). The grounds and pool are lovely. The location on a quiet stretch of the coast, but convenient walking to nice cafes and shops, and to the beach. A nice breakfast of eggs, tropical fruits, and delicious whole wheat bread. Downsides for us were tons of mosquitoes, even in the room at night. Overbed nets would be a helpful addition. One night was noisy with a pool party, which the owner (who was at the party) said is extremely rare. A little more attention to soap (we had to ask), extra toilet paper, and an extra bed cover or blanket for the sofa bed would be nice. We got the feeling El Nido is still getting its bearings and could grow into a lovely option on the small hotel-dotted Caribbean coast.
note: no internet access yet on this stretch of coast if this matters to you, but supposed to be in the works
