My husband and I just returned from our 7-night honeymoon at Korrigan Lodge. It had been a long, long day of traveling when we arrived after nightfall, and we were greeted with a bottle of champagne in our bungalow. This was only the beginning! The next morning, we were treated to the incredible breakfast that we were to have each morning the rest of our stay: a plate of beautifully prepared fresh tropical fruits, yogurt with granola, some sort of delicious pastry (croissant and banana bread to name a few), fruit juice, tea/coffee, freshly baked bread, and finally the best tasting eggs we've ever had, prepared however we liked. Such a wonderful way to start each day. We especially loved getting to know the three other couples staying at the lodge during breakfast time each morning and listening to Erwan and Ingrid's travel stories.
Everything mentioned previously about the property is true. The surroundings are incredibly green and lush, the flowers are spectacular, the smell of the jungle is amazing, and the sounds -- from the crickets to the howler monkeys to the rain beating down on your roof at night -- make for a truly special experience. The bungalows, each one designed and built by the owners themselves, provide an intimate and cozy setting that let you feel both safe and very much in the middle of the jungle. The pictures on the website and here on TripAdvisor don't even do them justice. Everything from the colorful hammock on the porch to the mirror in the bathroom is so beautifully crafted.
The area of Punta Uva is quiet and remote, with just a few restaurants and small grocery stores here and there. The closest restaurant to the lodge is about a 7 minute walk. Other restaurants in nearby Playa Chiquita require a longer walk or bike ride, and Puerto Viejo, the main town in the area, definitely requires a ride on the public bus (10 minutes or so) or a cab ride, though the cabs charge $10 which we found to be pretty pricey and not worth it. We loved being a distance away from Puerto Viejo, though, and always found going out for dinner each night in our area to be a really fun adventure. Our top 3 favorite restaurants were Jungle Love in Playa Chiquita, Pita Bonita in Playa Chiquita, and Selvin's in Punta Uva. We also loved Maxi's in Manzanillo, but really any meal we had in the area was pretty fantastic, always beautifully presented, always fresh, and always flavorful.
Among the many things to do in the area, our favorites were spending time at the gorgeous Punta Uva beach (this is literally where the jungle meets the Caribbean Sea), biking all around the area, ziplining (ask Erwan and Ingrid and they'll book it for you immediately), visiting the Jaguar Rescue Center (no jaguars actually, just a fabulous center that rescues animals like monkeys, sloths, and birds who are injured and takes care of them until they are ready to return to the wild), and whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River (we HIGHLY recommend this option as your means of getting either to this area from San Jose, or leaving here to go back to San Jose -- it is entirely worth it and such an incredible experience, even for people like us who are not athletic at all)!
But the best part by far about Korrigan Lodge is the atmosphere that Erwan and Ingrid create for their guests. Never have we ever met such gracious, friendly hosts. They went above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable 24/7. They'd make reservations for us at restaurants at the drop of a hat; graciously offer us bugspray, flashlights, umbrellas, bicycles, and even the use of the dishes in the reception area if we chose to make our own low-key meal at the lodge for lunch; give us real, honest advice about different things to do in the area; and always greet us with huge smiles. In a remote area like this where one can definitely experience a bit of a culture shock, we always felt incredibly taken care of.
We have to mention Erwan and Ingrid's dog, Bassam, whom we completely fell in love with during our stay. On our first morning, we didn't even bother to ask how to get to the beach -- Bassam was waiting for us at our doorstep to take us there. We could go on and on about him and share our own stories, but you really should just come and see for yourself. To say that this is the most loyal and goodhearted dog we've ever met is an understatement. If nothing else, just come to Korrigan Lodge for him!
Thank you Erwan and Ingrid (and Bassam) for truly helping to make our honeymoon so incredible. We hope to be back one day, and we wish you all the best as you continue to offer travelers a truly unique Costa Rican experience!
