“Cozy paradise honeymoon”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

My husband and I just returned from our 7-night honeymoon at Korrigan Lodge. It had been a long, long day of traveling when we arrived after nightfall, and we were greeted with a bottle of champagne in our bungalow. This was only the beginning! The next morning, we were treated to the incredible breakfast that we were to have each morning the rest of our stay: a plate of beautifully prepared fresh tropical fruits, yogurt with granola, some sort of delicious pastry (croissant and banana bread to name a few), fruit juice, tea/coffee, freshly baked bread, and finally the best tasting eggs we've ever had, prepared however we liked. Such a wonderful way to start each day. We especially loved getting to know the three other couples staying at the lodge during breakfast time each morning and listening to Erwan and Ingrid's travel stories.

Everything mentioned previously about the property is true. The surroundings are incredibly green and lush, the flowers are spectacular, the smell of the jungle is amazing, and the sounds -- from the crickets to the howler monkeys to the rain beating down on your roof at night -- make for a truly special experience. The bungalows, each one designed and built by the owners themselves, provide an intimate and cozy setting that let you feel both safe and very much in the middle of the jungle. The pictures on the website and here on TripAdvisor don't even do them justice. Everything from the colorful hammock on the porch to the mirror in the bathroom is so beautifully crafted.

The area of Punta Uva is quiet and remote, with just a few restaurants and small grocery stores here and there. The closest restaurant to the lodge is about a 7 minute walk. Other restaurants in nearby Playa Chiquita require a longer walk or bike ride, and Puerto Viejo, the main town in the area, definitely requires a ride on the public bus (10 minutes or so) or a cab ride, though the cabs charge $10 which we found to be pretty pricey and not worth it. We loved being a distance away from Puerto Viejo, though, and always found going out for dinner each night in our area to be a really fun adventure. Our top 3 favorite restaurants were Jungle Love in Playa Chiquita, Pita Bonita in Playa Chiquita, and Selvin's in Punta Uva. We also loved Maxi's in Manzanillo, but really any meal we had in the area was pretty fantastic, always beautifully presented, always fresh, and always flavorful.

Among the many things to do in the area, our favorites were spending time at the gorgeous Punta Uva beach (this is literally where the jungle meets the Caribbean Sea), biking all around the area, ziplining (ask Erwan and Ingrid and they'll book it for you immediately), visiting the Jaguar Rescue Center (no jaguars actually, just a fabulous center that rescues animals like monkeys, sloths, and birds who are injured and takes care of them until they are ready to return to the wild), and whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River (we HIGHLY recommend this option as your means of getting either to this area from San Jose, or leaving here to go back to San Jose -- it is entirely worth it and such an incredible experience, even for people like us who are not athletic at all)!

But the best part by far about Korrigan Lodge is the atmosphere that Erwan and Ingrid create for their guests. Never have we ever met such gracious, friendly hosts. They went above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable 24/7. They'd make reservations for us at restaurants at the drop of a hat; graciously offer us bugspray, flashlights, umbrellas, bicycles, and even the use of the dishes in the reception area if we chose to make our own low-key meal at the lodge for lunch; give us real, honest advice about different things to do in the area; and always greet us with huge smiles. In a remote area like this where one can definitely experience a bit of a culture shock, we always felt incredibly taken care of.

We have to mention Erwan and Ingrid's dog, Bassam, whom we completely fell in love with during our stay. On our first morning, we didn't even bother to ask how to get to the beach -- Bassam was waiting for us at our doorstep to take us there. We could go on and on about him and share our own stories, but you really should just come and see for yourself. To say that this is the most loyal and goodhearted dog we've ever met is an understatement. If nothing else, just come to Korrigan Lodge for him!

Thank you Erwan and Ingrid (and Bassam) for truly helping to make our honeymoon so incredible. We hope to be back one day, and we wish you all the best as you continue to offer travelers a truly unique Costa Rican experience!

The Korrigan Lodge is just amazing!!!! The beaches are exquisite and the sights and sounds in the jungle are incredible. The bungalows are very charming and relaxing in a setting that seems like something out of a story book. Whether you are honeymooning (which we were) or vacationing or just visiting, this place is a must. Erwan and Ingrid are by far the best hosts that I have ever had at any accomodation and no matter what the occasion for visiting, they will personally see to it that you will have an unforgettable time. Any excursions you would like to do, transportation needed, or merely advice on things to do or see, Erwan and Ingrid will take care of. Breakfast every morning was nothing short of incredible. Every thing that they recommended was spot on. Even their dog Bassam will see to it that enjoy by accompanying you to the beach, watching your things or going swimming with you. A walk with Bassam is a must. Whether you are taking your first trip to Costa Rica or your 10th, do your self a favor and stay here the majority of your trip. I can not wait to return!!!

Let me add another 5 stars to this great stay. Erwan and his wife are the perfect hosts and eager to make your visit outstanding. My only disappointment was having only two days to visit Korrigan Lodges, Punta Uva and Puerto Viejo. The accommodations are superb, You must know before making your reservation that these lodges don't offer satellite TV, coffee pots in your room or air conditioning. If these are a requirement to a great visit, try something else. However, if a visit to a laid back rain forest, filled with nature, good food and fabulous beaches is in your sites ; then do yourself a true favor and stay at this place. You'll have fond memories that will last a lifetime.

every positive thing you have read here is absolutely true. our stay at the korrigan lodge in punta uva was perfect. the property and bunglow were immaculate and cleaned daily. we stayed here for the duration of our trip to costa rica and cannot imagine being anywhere else. we cannot even begin to talk about how much we fell in love with the korrigan lodge, puerto viejo, the beaches and of course bassam. ingrid and erwan were the best hosts you could hope for when traveling to a new (or even not new to you) area. they set us up with tino for a hike, pointed out animals on the property, directed us to the best restaurants, and even recommended the cheapest little spot to rent kayaks by the hour. we stayed for six nights and would have loved to stay longer if time allowed. for those wondering about no AC, we can assure you that the ceiling fan and screen doors/windows worked wonders.

Room Tip: they're all great.

Beautiful setting on the edge of the jungle. Individual bungalows, lovely decor, great breakfasts. French couple run it & take children. 10 min drive to Puerto Viejo (not ideal if you've no car - but perfect if you do!).  Friendly black dog, Bassam, who walked to Punta Uva beach with us in the mornings & loved chasing coconuts!!! Punta Uva beach 5 min walk - gorgeous. La Refugio, argentian owned restaurant - really tasty - 3 min drive in the opposite direction to Puerto Viejo. I would thoroughly recommend this accommodation & would def stay here again!

What a great place to stay! The property is a gorgeous jungle filled with plants and animals. You'll likely see (and hear!) howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, and a number of other creatures on the property or just down the road. You can walk to the beach, which is quite beautiful. The rooms are completely private and well-appointed with ceiling fans and safes (even alarm systems, for the nervous).

Marise and Pierre were our hosts while the owners (Ingrid and Erwan) were taking a break with their newborn. They were super helpful and friendly! I did get a chance to meet Erwan, as well, and he seemed quite friendly, too.

My girlfriend and I loved this place so much we extended our stay. I can't recommend it enough!

Room Tip: All rooms are private units well separated from each other. Can't go wrong!

Korrigan Lodge in Punta Uva, a stone's throw from Puerto Viejo, exceeds expectations in every way. Four yurt-like well-appointed bungalows, tastefully and thoughtfully constructed, offer the traveler wonderfully comfortable jungle lodging. Tiled floors, orthopedic mattresses, great bathrooms and wonderful hosts await you. All this in a lust jungle setting only 5 minutes from a beautiful for $80 a night including tax and a fabulous breakfast make for a memorable stay.

The hosts, a young couple from France, make you feel welcome while giving you your space and provide an exxperience you will never forget. The slew of positive reviews are spot-on and korrigan lodge more than deserves all the copious praise it has received!

Room Tip: bring mosquito repellent!
