Korrigan has to be the best place to stay in the greater PV area. The hosts are amazing! They really went out of their way to help out, even booking another hotel when they were full.

Beware, the howler monkeys start at around 4:30AM, so bring earplugs!

We absolutely loved our 4 night stay at Korrigan Lodge - we arrived a day later than planned due to hold ups in the US immigration/transit process but the owners Erwan and Ingrid were so welcoming and understanding when we arrived (having also arranged, cancelled and then rearranged our transportation from Alajuela to Puerto Viejo for us via email) - we immediately felt that the 24hr+ journey and pain of getting there from London had been worth it.

Erwan and Ingrid have built the lodge themselves and it really is somewhere special with a personal touch. It really feels like a home from home and nothing is too much trouble for them (even when I asked for poached eggs one morning!) - they really made us feel welcome and comfortable during our stay.

The bungalow is cosy and you are definitely at one with nature - with the sounds of the howler monkeys at 4am being like nothing you will ever hear again! but then again you are in the rainforest and it really is an incredible unique experience we didnt' get anywhere else in CR.

Breakfast was always a joy - with freshly baked croissants, bread, fresh fruit and eggs to order, not to mention the delicious local hot chocolate from the local village.

Ingrid and Erwan were great at giving tips on the the best beaches to visit and the family dog Bassam would accompany us to the beach and watch out for our bags whilst we went swimming (and join us for a dip too) - he loves people and would just wait on the path of our bungalow to go to the beach with us! I've never come across such a smart dog!

It is a little way from PV but this is exactly why we chose it - to get away from the action and find somewhere a little more secluded. The use of the bikes were great touch and it was only a 30 mins cycle or so to the main town and a little longer to manzanillo. At night we usually caught a bus in to Puerto Viejo for dinner and then a taxi back which was about $10 I think.

The only minor thing was a lack of internet when we were there in Nov 2011 but I think this has now been installed.

Also do take a guided trip with Florentine to Manzanillo - it was one of the best trips we did in CR - he is great fun and so knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and great at spotting anything from sloths to centipedes! we ate and smelled some great wild fruits on our trip (ugli fruit, coconut, wild coriander, tumeric, lemongrass, cocoa pods) and learned enough about the wildlife to set us up for the rest of our holiday in CR.

We had a great time and would really recommend staying here, it really is quite special.

My husband and I just returned from the Korrigan Lodge and it was wonderful! We arrived late in the evening and Erwan was waiting for us. It rained a few times in the evenings but cleared up by morning. The sounds of howler monkeys greeted us in the morning. Breakfasts were wonderful and included fresh fruit, yogurt with granola, bacon, eggs, and fresh bread along with fresh juice, coffee, and water. The grounds are beautiful and Ingrid pointed out a sloth in the tree, the toucan nest, and showed us the nest of bullet ants. She also was extremely helpful when we were deciding which activities to do during the day. She called the places we wanted to visit and arranged everything, including our zip-lining, trip to Jaguar Rescue Center, and Caribeans Chocolate tour. Erwan even made reservations for our dinner at Jungle Love one evening. The bicycles are very helpful to get around. We used them to find lunch and to travel in to town because we needed to use the ATM (the only one is in Puerto Viejo). The bus stop is a short walk away, as is the beach. Their dog, Bassam, is pretty awesome. On the first day we didn’t know where the beach was, so we told Bassam, “Let’s go!” and he led us straight to the beach, looking back to make sure we were following him. Once at the beach, he guarded our things if someone walked by. When we were ready to go back we told Bassam to “Come on” and he led us back to the lodge. We were sad to leave such a magical place and hope to visit again. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Room Tip: Koad is the most secluded, but their new WiFi doesn't transmit as well to that bungalow, if that...

After 3 nights at Banana Azul, we finished our honeymoon with 3 nights at Korrigan Lodge. What a contrast between these two places. Banana Azul was an laid-back ocean front hotel, and an excellent one at that (see my review). On the other hand, we arrived at Korrigan late morning, and the hosts, Ingrid and Erwan immediately greeted us with a "congratulations on your marriage." They had remembered from when I reserved in September that we were coming on our honeymoon in May.

The setting is a lush rainforest, with 4 bungalows and a nice reception area, which doubles as a breakfast/lounge area during the day. The setting is so peaceful and serene, and Ingrid has planted many types of beautiful jungle plants throughout the property. The shade helps keep the area cool, even in the hottest part of the day.

Our bungalow, Koad, contained one big bedroom, and a bathroom separated by a half wall. What a great design; the bungalow had sliding doors with screens inside of the typical bi-fold, slatted doors which you would close at night. The ceiling was high, and somehow, even without A/C, it was very comfortable in the room. We did have some mosquitoes attack us on the porch, more my wife than I, but the hosts provide mosquito coils to light which helped keep them at bay some. On the inside we had just a few bugs come in, and never used the netting around the bed.

Ingrid and Erwan take great pride in the Lodge, and love to show you around to see the plants and wildlife. We had morning wakeups from Howler Monkeys each morning, and they visited in the afternoons occasionally. We also spotted hummingbirds, butterflies, lizards, and frogs. A sloth or two visited one day, and a family of toucans nests in a tree on the property! A small yellow viper is in residence in the tree by the breakfast area, and Ingrid will show it to you (it's hard to spot!)

Breakfast was incredible...Erwan somehow works magic with the little cooktop. Here is what you get free for breakfast: coffee and juice, and course 1 is fruit (fancily plated), along with a locally baked fresh croissant, brioche or pastry. Next is yiogurt with granola, and then you get eggs made to order with bacon or sausage. You are free to make your own toast with fresh loaves of local baked bread. In other words, you won't need lunch!

There are not a great deal of things to do within walking distance other than the beach ( a 10 minute walk), but really, we loved this fact. We felt secluded and safe, and the hosts had free bikes we used when we went out to supper at Selvin's, Jungle Love and Pita Bonita, all within easy biking distance. There is a small store walking distance away to buy snacks and drinks.

What review would be complete without mentioning Bassam, the perfect canine host. He was so friendly and only came with you if you asked him to. He guarded our stuff and also came in the water, and was a true gentleman.

The bed, linens, and pillows here were the best we had in Costa Rica, and the beaches nearby were very nice.

The most incredible thing of all is that you get a great place to stay, great breakfast, free bikes, and tax is included...all for $80 a night in the off season. I don't want them to raise the prices, but they could easily do so and still probably be booked solid. What a great value!

I give this place a 5 without hesitation.

The only thing I would recommend they do to improve the bungalow is to add more hooks to hang thins on, and maybe another shelf or two to put things on when you empty your suitcase. It was not a big deal though, and in no way is this a reason to not go to Korrigan.

Thank you Ingrid and Erwan, we feel like we are part of your big extended family!

Room Tip: Koad is definitely the best bungalow...it is set in the back of the property away from the other bun...

I was recommended Korrigan lodge by a couple of travellers that I met on a previous holiday. Myself and my husband decided to try it out for a week and what a great decision that was! From start to finish this was an amazing stay. Marise and Pierre could not have been more welcoming and helped us with everything, from booking trips to recommending restaurants. The service was outstanding and Pierre took us for a tour of the area as soon as we arrived, plus a trip to a waterfall and Cahuita National Park. He is so knowledgeable about all the animals/area etc, he is a fascinating guy. Marise always made us feel looked after and was very efficient and spoke fantastic English.

The setting of the lodge is wonderful. A little remote but that is the whole point. This really is a place to get away from it all. We loved not having a TV and didn't really miss air con as the bungalows are really shaded from all the trees. They just installed wi-fi in all the bungalows on our second day there which is very helpful when you need to check your flights etc.

Food - There is a shop only a two minute walk away which we bought lunch from most days, try their banana bread on the counter, it's yummy. There is also a restaurant very near, Punta Uva Lounge which is great for lunch and cocktails etc but closes about 5pm. El Refugio is the only restaurant within walking distance for an evening meal, which was nice but we found it a little pricey and the walk in the dark a little spooky. The best place to go is Jungle Love which is in Playa Chiquita (5 mins by taxi), the food was excellent, especially the Chipotle Chicken and the owner was fantastic. Luckily we got on with the other guests at Korrigan so shared a taxi both ways, I think it was 3000 colones each way. We only went into Puerto Viejo once for dinner as it's 5000 colones each way which is a lot added onto your dinner bill. We did get a pizza takeaway delivered to the lodge one night when we were too tired to go out which was great and a good price.

Korrigan breakfasts were always large and filling, you will never go hungry. There is always free drinking water available or a kettle to make yourself a cup of tea or coffee. The fridge in the room is great for keeping your drinks cold. The hammock on our porch was lovely, very relaxing and always made me want to fall asleep. The bungalows are all individually alarmed, like a car alarm and we always used the safe in the room which gives you piece of mind. The rooms are always kept extremely clean, it felt more like a 5 star hotel.

The beach - is just across the road, it is beautiful, golden sand and palm trees. Very idyllic. We also stayed two nights at Banana Azul but the beach there is black sand and not half as nice. I wouldn't recommend staying there either. We wished we'd just had an extra 2 nights at Korrigan.

We made use of the free bikes in the daytime and within easy biking distance we went to the Jaguar Rescue Centre, Chocolate tour, yoga classes and you can get to plenty of restaurants.

Bassam - The amazing dog there that everyone mentions. He understands many languages and when he sees you pick up your beach towels he gets excited! We took him to the beach with us a few times, well, more like he took us as he leads the way! He would always guard our stuff on the beach and bark if anyone came nearby. We were sad to leave him and our new friends at Korrigan when our weeks stay was over. I would recommend this place to anyone - book it now!

What a treat. Breakfast was delicious in the mornings, the cabins were clean and modern. A short walk to a very nice beach with good snorkeling and a nice little store on the way back to buy sodas and treats. The hosts were wonderful and so helpful recommending local restraunts, walks, and helping coordinate our travel to the next leg of our journey. I certainly hope to come back for on of our anniversaries.

Korrigan lodge was the second to last stop on our honeymoon in Costa Rica, I must say it was our favorite stop of all. We arrived late in the evening by bus and where greeted by Marise at the entrance, she had been expecting us and made us feel welcome immediately. Shortly after Marise gave us a quick rundown of the amenities we were greeted by her husband Pierre. You can tell that this couple really knows the true meaning of hospitality, they made us feel as we where visiting family in paradise, not staying a hotel. The next morning after a delicious breakfast prepared by Marise and Pierre, Pierre offered to walk us down to the beach and show us some wildlife. Pierre's short tour was great because it showed us how to get to the beach and how to spot Sloths and monkeys. We dined in the evenings in Puerto Viejo which a short bus or taxi ride away. We also rode the bikes provided by Korrigan down to Manzanillo... well worth the ride! We consider Marise and Pierre friends now and we hope to keep in touch, they are such great people. They will go out of their way to make your stay unforgettable. Also I won't spend too much time talking about Bassam, he is absolutely a character and you have to meet him in person!

I can talk for days about how wonderful and unforgettable our experience was but do yourself a favor and check it out on your own.... you won't be let down. Just don't expect any tv or wi-fi, unplug and enjoy.

Make sure to check out the Jaguar rescue center which is nearby.... it was amazing!
