Rocking J's
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Rocking J's is a one off, I've never stayed anywhere like it. It is utterly mad, fantastically vibrant and pretty much on the beach. It's off-key, the decor is loud, the people are characters, and it's affordable.

I arrived at Rocking J's as a solo traveller, the accommodation was extremely cheap, and they have something for everyone- I slept in a hammock. I don't know much about the room, but found the hammock's comfortable. There is not a lot of personl space, as there are about 30 or so hammocks in just one area, however there are lockers provided for all your belongings. As the place is a quite a large site, it can be a bit difficult to meet people as a solo traveller, especially during the low months- however after a while you get into the swing of things.

The owner J is a quirky man (for want of a better word), he has a special bunker, prepared for the end of the world- I recommend you take a tour when he gives one. The entire hostel is covered in paintings and murals and mosaic. The hostel is right on the beach, and it's a nice stretch, they're are often bonfires in the night- overall nice atmosphere.

The negatives would be the kitchen- it's quite dirty, there is not enough kitchen equipment, I had to use my own camping spoon and to eat cereal I had to use a cup- there were no bowls. Also, the bathrooms are sometimes dirty, but it was mixed on different days. Also, the transport I had booked from the hostel was- as I later found out more expensive than booking it in town. The staff were overall lovely except for the receptionists.

The pro's were: Being on the beach, the vibe, the cost, it's close enough to some great places to eat, and you can rent a cycle and head all over town and up to some of the other beaches. The bunker for the end of the world, the other people staying at the hostel, and you MUST try the amazing ice-cream & pineapple desert- delicious.

Amazing mosaic art work all over this beach front hostel. Went there during "the calm before the storm" as one of the bartenders explained. By far one of the better costa hostels. Affordable good staff massive capacity cheap. Rare in costa. Also the best springboard to gather a party crew to rock into bocos del toro. Shuttles leave every morning. Worry free. Bathroom and showers werent the most frequently cleaned. Longish walk into town if ur on the lazy side.

if you're looking for a cheap cool-looking oceanside place to party, this is it. However, the staff isn't very friendly and were having loud arguments among themselves. The kitchen is TERRIBLE; a few broken dishes, tiny dirty space and one fridge for the whole place. There also isn't very good space to hang out in (its hard to set things on tables with broken rusty lighters glued to them). If you are looking for a quiet, low-key evening, or even a chilled out reggae filled night, this isn't the place, since there is always music playing from about 8am on (excessively loud at night) and no reggae (the two nights we were there). Oh and if you stay in their tents, the entire floor shakes everytime someone walks by.

I'd read some pretty mixed reviews on this place and wasn't sure what to expect, but I honestly have no complaints. It had a great atmosphere and is definitely the place to go if you're a backpacker. I went with friends, but I imagine it would be a really great place for solo travellers looking to make some friends to go. We definitely chatted with a few solo travellers throughout the night.

I love all the art, much of it made by guests, all around the place- murals, mosaics, all really cool. The bar was good- can't go wrong with 2 dollar beers and the bar staff were all nice. We stayed in hammocks and they were quite cozy. The bugs were not nearly as bad as I was expecting given certain reviews. I'd bring a sheet or a blanket with you if you can. Some of our friends also got tents for very cheap as well.

I had a great stay there. You're close to some great beaches and the bar has tasty food. If you don't need much in the way of luxury, I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you're doing hammocks, try to bring a sleeping bag or sheet.

I've been to this hotel twice now (once in October 2010, once in january 2012) and had two totally different experiences.. the only similarity is that both times I had an amazing stay, meeting great new people from all over the world and relaxing in a beautiful country.
The first stay in a tent (low on cash) was fine.. after a night of alcohol and long conversation, everyone heads to bed and sleeps great. plus, we all had sunny afternoon naps in the hammocks in the courtyard anyway.
staying in a dorm room was even better however, as the privacy was worth it, and the way the room was designed created a very fun vibe. with a full-length mirror on the wall and the bed halfway up the wall, only accessible by a small ladder.
the lovable but kooky owner, J, is an adorable stoner who is very easily distracted, but his ark is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. definately worth a trip if you are easy going and open minded to the ups and downs of the place.. also, there are signs everywhere saying please smoke your weed on the beach but nobody really cares either way.

Room Tip: Try to go with friends and get a dorm - so much fun for a party weekend

I stayed at Rocking J's in a tent, trying to save a few dollars. The staff there aren't very friendly, the kitchen can barely be called a kitchen as all of the pans are in terrible shape, it isn't clean, and they don't even provide matches to light the burners. The places to hang out aren't that welcoming, and it feels dark and cramped inside. Compared with other locations, the amenities are really lacking for what you can get for the same price.

However if you're 19 years and looking to party really hard for a few days, than this would be an okay place to do that.
