“Great Hostel”

If you can get in to Pagalu I would highly recommend it, they don't take reservations so you need to show up and hope for the best. The hostel is gorgeous, very clean and reasonably priced. A lot of outdoor living space and fairly quiet. Also having the bike rental at the hostel next door was convenient for only 5 dollars you can have the bike all day. You're also right next door to the grocery store, and they have laundry service.

The hostal itself is amazing, I would have given it five stars if it werent for a mix up we had with the staff (read below).
The building a beautiful. The common space is large and open with hammocks and many tables to sit at. The kitchen is large and kept very clean. The rooms and bathroom are clean too. They have two modern computers for guest use, and water that you can buy for very cheap. The rooms also have large storage lockers that fit big backpacks. The shower was awesome, or water and portable shower head.
We stayed in dorm the first night. It only had four beds so it was nice and quiet. Originally we asked for a private but they did not have one so we took the dorm. The next morning we were both very happy with the dorm but decided to check if there was a private available anyways. We were told that there was a private that had a leak, so it was discounted. Because the private ended up being cheaper than the dorm at it's discount rate and we don't mind a bit of rain, we decided to take it. We stayed for a couple more nights and were very happy with the room. However, when we checked out and payed, the owner (?) told us that the room was not actually discounted. He said they fixed the leak a couple days ago. We thought it was strange no one told us sooner because we had mentioned to several staff members that we were moving to the discounted private room. Perhaps he decided not to discount the room because it didn't rain during our stay? Or maybe it was actually fixed.. Either way, we did not fight having to pay an extra $10 dollars per night than we were told because the room was nice and it was worth the money. However, I don't think it was right for us to be told one rate and then find out later that it is actually quiet a bit more money...
So in all, the hostal is great, but maybe there needs to be more communication among the staff members.

Pagalu was recommended to me by a local, for which i'm very grateful. I only planned on staying 1 night, but stayed 4 in the end. The place was very clean, safe (important here!), had a great hang out vibe, and was quiet enough for those who wanted to chill, but close enough to the action for the party-goers.The kitchen was a major plus for making food instead of eating out every meal, and the dorm rooms were small enough to be comfortable and friendly, but not crowded. HOT water for the first time in latin america was great :) :) Staff were very helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Would definitely recommend, as it seems many others would too - everyday new people were arriving having spent a night at various different hostels in town then deciding to leave those places and come here immediately. Says it all.

Pagalu is a very nice, quite and very clean place. It's one of the best hostels we have stayed in the last 6 month. We had a private room with shared bathroom, our room was a good size, two windows and a nice bed. The kitchen and the common room are very clean and provide enough space for all the guests. The location is very good, just some steps awai from the main street and just a few meters to the next supermarket. The staff ist very friendly and speaks several languages. Unfortunately, you can't make a reservation, you have to go and ask for an available room.

Room Tip: The had the private room number 7, it was very good! But I think all other rooms are very good, too.

The ambiance was what got to me. The staff was friendly, the common area was almost always with nice guests. Kitchen area was stocked with utensils and equipment you can use and condiments were free (oil, salt, pepper etc) ALSO whatever food that the guests leaves the staff puts it in the FREE basket so that other guests can make use of it.

The private room was adequately sized and the shared bath was clean when needed.
We liked it so much that we stayed another an extra day so all in all we stayed 4 days.
Also its 7 steps away from the grocery store. And 5 min walk to the bus stop and nearest beach.

I've slept in over 50 different hostels worldwide throughout my journeys and this is by far the best.

It was advised to us by a bar owner in Puerto Viejo. You can't make reservations upon your arrival but we we're lucky that there were 2 free beds in a six persons dorm.

Dormitories were really clean, big backpack sized locker. Bathrooms are clean and hot water which is a rarity in CR. The kitchen and communal area are really nice, well organized and clean. It has an relaxed, not a 'party' atmosphere. Perfect if you like to read an book or whatever. WiFi worked ok, sometimes there wasn't a connection but for just a short period.

I would definitly advise this hostel if you're stayin in Puerto Viejo. If it is full, try again the next day. It's definitly worth it.

Stayed here for six nights in a dorm and was very impressed with the place. Great location in town,a block back from the main street (quiet but close) and right next to a supermarket. Dorms are very spacious and each bed gets a shelf, fan, reading light, big locker, another shelf, towel rack and a towel. There were 6 beds in my dorm so not crowded at all. Shared bathrooms are great - very clean and plenty of room to put your things down or hang them up. Communal kitchen is a little small but well stocked. Kept very clean and the fridge is emptied out regularly. Plenty of tables/chairs to sit and mingle. The place really feels like a mini hotel, its that clean and comfy. Only downside was that it rained for 5 of 7 days there (pretty normal for Caribbean coast) and there is nothing to do in this hostel when it rains i.e. no TV or movies, no board games (except one chess set).

PRO's
- spacious dorms with big lockers
- very clean, big bathrooms
- clean kitchen, well equipped
-good location
- very quiet in the evenings (for sleep)

CON's
- not many facilities
- wifi was pretty average

All in all a great place to relax (not a party hostel at all) and enjoy clean and comfortable accommodation. Best hostel in Puerto Viejo without a doubt (Rocking J's is a good 10-15 min walk out of town).
