Stayed in the Blue Cottage and it was so wonderfully private and relaxing! Great to have a fully equipped kitchen and drinking water right from the tap! Cahuita was lovely and enjoyed how quiet and laid back it was as well as the the beautiful beaches both across the street and at the National Park.
We did have an issue with the youngest of the 3 German Shepard dogs on the property that was not very well trained and was nipping at our daughter's bathing suit bows. When she started to run it kept chasing and biting at her. If she had of been toddler age she could have been hurt.....I think part of the issue could have been that the owners were not there - it was being managed by someone else in their absence and they didn't seem to have a lot of control over the dog. The only other drawback on a couple of nights was the neighbouring property has dogs that barked all night long! Howler monkeys are part of the sounds of Costa Rica but someone's bored, lonely dog is just a nuisance! Not the fault of this owner but definitely a let down when you are looking for a peaceful night's sleep. Pura Vida! We would definitely go back as it was an overall great spot. BTW we are dog lovers and have several at home:-)

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at PNG. We are really sorry about your daughter’s encounter with our youngest dog Shep. We don’t normally allow the dogs out except for Dolly who, as can be seen from numerous Trip Advisor reviews, loves to play with our guests in the garden. She is in fact, a great favourite with children. Shep, Dolly’s son, is also very friendly but being a young dog, he just wants to play and he can be rambunctious. We realize that this can be scary to a young child, not to mention her mom. We can assure our future guests that we will obtain parental consent before allowing any canine encounters.
We are sorry to hear that the neighbour’s dog kept you awake. The last time this happened we went around and spoke to our neighbours and the barking miraculously ceased.
Thanks again for the positive words and we hope that you can make it back soon.

We enjoyed our days here. What a lovely location and room. Great bed, quiet, clean what more could you want. I highly recommend staying here.

Far enough outside of town but close enough to walk. Ohh and by the way. I loved the pool. I wish the beach was cleaner. But they sure try their grounds are immaculate.

It is home away from home. Excellent location, very comfortable and clean and Marise is wonderful: helpful, present where needed and yet discrete. The only 'negative point' is that some family travelling with kids feel really at home that they forget about other guests when using and abusing from the pool area...

Playa Negra Guesthouse is a friendly and cosy get-away by the beach. Only a couple of minutes walk into Cahuita and with a very nice pool. Rooms are spacious with a nice deck outside.

They don't serve breakfast but there's a small kitchen in the room so you can make your own.

Playa Negra is a real diamond Guesthouse at a real diamond location Cahuita. First of all the Guesthouse is very relaxed with an extremely beautiful garden, charming houses, nice little pool and very nice with the honor bar. Great recommendations at the hotel regarding Breakfast at our most favorite breakfast place on the planet Brigittes.....Wonderful Banana Pancakes, fruit juices etc and charming dogs and cats. The beach is across the street so you can take a swim in the ocean whenever you feel like it which is also great. Another plus is that in Cahuita village and close to Playa Negra you can go to a bar and really feel the closeness to the wonderful local people as well. Highly recommend this to anyone going down the the Caribbean part of Costa Rica.

This place is by far my favorite place on earth. You're not exactly on the ocean, but it's across the street. The friendly German Sheppard's of the owners' will accompany you to the beach if you like and play tug of war. I highly recommend waking up early and going to the black sand beach solo. It's an amazing experience and will help you realize that there's more to life than keeping up with the Jones's. I've been all around the world and this is the best, not to mention very cheap compared to other beach resort places such as Hawaii, the Pacific side of Costa Rica or even Cancun.

The owners are cool as [--] too, they let me make free long distance calls. Thanks guys!

Costa Rica was the first trip that my fiance and I had taken together and Cahuita was our first stop. After a wearily long day of traveling we arrived pretty late at the Playa Negra (after 9pm) and Greg was right there waiting outside to welcome us. When you walk through the front gate you are transported into this little tropical garden oasis. The landscaping is beautiful and the whole setting is so peaceful and relaxing! Our room was one of a few set up in the larger building just behind the building housing the front desk. Despite sharing walls we were never disturbed by any noisy neighbors (even with the german shepherds next door!). There was no AC in the room which at first we were concerned about with the humidity being so high (and we live in Houston) but we never had an uncomfortable night. Everything was clean and well maintained. They left us coffee on our patio to enjoy in the mornings and there were always drinks for purchase out at the pool house (very convenient to pick up before a daily hike!). There isn't any food offered in the Guesthouse but there are several restaurants within walking distance and we never had trouble finding something tasty to eat.

Just across the street is the beach which, during our visit was littered with debris from heavy rains (it was early December when we visited) but was still worth exploring. And by night we wandered down the street to a chill reggae bar that had live music. If you're ok with a little bit of walking (which we loved) you can walk to town which is equally laid back and full of life in the evenings. Greg provided us with a map to get to the major places in town - ATM, grocer, bus station - which made things even easier. He even provided us with tips as to better places to visit while on the East coast - which is what led us to take a bus to Manzanillo beach where my fiance proposed! It was a perfect introduction to Costa Rica. I can't say enough good things about this place. I would definitely come back and stay here!
