Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Two types of tours to see sloths and learn about their diminishing rainforest habitat. Sorry, no direct contact with sloths, for their well-being and yours. "Buttercup Tour" requires no advance reservation; just arrive about 20 minutes before the top of the hour (8AM–2PM) to register. Duration about 2 hours. "Insider's Tour" is given twice daily and requires advance booking. This tour includes everything in the Buttercup Tour plus "behind-the-scenes" visits to the NICU, Slothpital, climbing area and more. Admission/donations collected directly support the sloths – their rescue, rehabilitation, wellness, research, housing and enrichments. Thank you for supporting the sloths with your tour!

My daughter and I visited and stayed at the sanctuary. We paid extra and did the 'behind the scenes tour'. Our room was clean and cool (thanks to air-conditioning) and our breakfast and lunch were lovely. The tour was awesome. Our boat guide paddled us lazily along the river/stream on the sanctuary's property, pointing out flora and fauna as we went along. It was an incredible relaxing and enjoyable hour ride even though it started raining soon after we began and by the time we were half way through all three of us were soaked. Undeterred, our guide gave us the full experience and made the tour memorable. The sloths are incredible but even more incredible is the work being done in terms of research to understand these creature. The staff are wonderful and perhaps the most knowledgeable people when it comes to sloths. It was the highlight of our trip to CR. The bed and breakfast is just that, there is no dinner service so we ventured into Cahuita which was a bit sketchy. We did however, find a great little restaurant in town, Ricki's, and had a super meal. If you are along the Caribbean coast this place is worth a visit.

The Sloth Sanctuary Buttercup Tour is a must if you’re staying Puerto Viejo. This is the only sloth sanctuary in the world and the experience of seeing these amazing creatures up close is unforgettable. Our tour included seeing the resident adult sloths, the nursery and the babies doing their morning exercises. After a tour of the sanctuary, we took a canoe trip behind the property to see sloths in the wild. The sanctuary is family owned and does a lot to care for injured and orphaned sloths in Costa Rica. Very little is known about sloths and the sanctuary has contributed a wealth of information to what we do know about these incredible animals. Don’t miss the sanctuary!

We caught a local bus from Puerto Veijo to the sanctuary thinking we might save money by not booking a tour deal. We have seen sloths in the trees in the national parks, so really just wanted to see them closeup.
We paid $25 each at the Sanctuary, but took only the first part of the tour. It's the only price option, quite expensive, but it is amazing to see the sloths, and they all have names and personalities. The staff are totally committed to looking after them and provide important research information as well. Probably the only chance to see a sloth close up.
Only gave 3 rating as would have liked a cheaper option without the canoe ride.

You will learn to love this curious, slow moving animal. The family escorts you through the sanctuary and you can actually pet them. You will learn so much about the sloth on the visit. You will also have a boat ride--not the best part of the tour.
