Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Two types of tours to see sloths and learn about their diminishing rainforest habitat. Sorry, no direct contact with sloths, for their well-being and yours. "Buttercup Tour" requires no advance reservation; just arrive about 20 minutes before the top of the hour (8AM–2PM) to register. Duration about 2 hours. "Insider's Tour" is given twice daily and requires advance booking. This tour includes everything in the Buttercup Tour plus "behind-the-scenes" visits to the NICU, Slothpital, climbing area and more. Admission/donations collected directly support the sloths – their rescue, rehabilitation, wellness, research, housing and enrichments. Thank you for supporting the sloths with your tour!

Just a great place to visit & support. We actually visited back in 2010, I just hadn't thought about reviewing anything at that time.

sloths of all sizes, dispositions- up front and close. recommend taking the insider tour- though expensive goes to the care of the sloths. The cages for the adult sloths seem small and with little stimulation- though I don't know how much stimulation a sloth requires......Staff says they have successfully released a large no. of sloths back into the wild...loved the visit to the nursery- baby sloths sucking their toes!

River trip pleasant and the guide works hard to find creatures ....lots of birds and some bats...
The sanctuary is located quite a trek along CR's Caribbean coast....
There is a very informative and entertaining NatGeo documentary on this sanctuary, but sadly it is not available to be seen at the sanctuary.

Great time with the sloths! My boys were delighted to watch feeding time, and the nursery with the pajama clad baby sloths!

We enjoyed the stories of the rescued sloths, seeing their personalities and the canoe trip in the lagoon allowed us to see some sloths, monkeys, bats and a caymen in their habitat.
Last tour at 2pm so come early. Have some rain gear available, you are in the tropics.

I was a bit disappointed, first we booked the tour through an agency in Puerto Viejo because we had no car and needed transportation. Got ready for the tour, but nobody came to pick us up. Although we booked the tour, it was cancelled for us, because their was a bigger group from Limon (cruise liner) coming in spontaneously. Naturally that means more money and so we were just invited out. We really wanted to to the tour, not having been able to do much the previous days because of a Dengue fever. After getting really cross, we were allowed to make the tour some hours later, but it was not really what we expected. The canoe tour was nice, but we did not really see an animal, we hoped to learn something about the place and how sloths live in their natural places, maybe through a film or something. But this was just the canoe tour and then a visit to some sloths and a volunteer talking a bit about the animals. It was very interesting seeing the sloths from so close, the differences between two and three fingered sloths but still, we expected a lot more to learn. This is only for sloth-maniacs how want to see sloths and nothing more. The whole place felt very touristy and not very welcoming.
