From the moment you enter, this place has the WOW factor! The open-air lobby has beautiful stone work and a stunning rainforest mural. You then walk down the covered walkways to your room. Ours overlooked the pool with a wrap around deck shared with the room next door. The rooms are attractively furnished with lovely artwork. The swimming pool is surrounded by rainforest, you can see birds flying overhead while swimming! We even saw a pair of Great Green Macaws! The restaurant has an equally lovely setting with nice pizzas and main meals. Breakfast is upstairs and served as a buffet. We came in a bit late due to the birding but still found enough to fill us up. I just LOVE the tables, too bad I couldn't bring one home! I knew I had zero chance of getting it home in one piece even if I could carry it! One of the nicest things about this lodge is the educational displays and the evening lecture by the lodge's official guide, Alejandro. Alejandro was an awesome guide (and photographer) and gave us a fantastic early morning bird walk! There are some nice trails on the property, both covered and uncovered and you can walk down by the river to see more birds. He knows their calls and has eagle eyes for spotting them!

I have photos of both the lodge and birds on my blog: Miles to the Wild, search on Selva Verde.

March 8 2014 my partner and i left an iphone in a locked bungalow at 5:45 a.m. At 7:30 a.m we called reception to go and retrieve the phone, but were told that it wasn't found. Later, we located the phone, about a mile from the lodge, using the Apple app, and alerted the staff. We were informed by the staff that it wasn't found. The lodge owners expressed concern but were disinclined to recompense us for the loss or to find the thief, who works for the lodge, as a key was necessary to gain access to the bungalow. If and until management do a thorough staff vetting to discover and remove the individual(s) responsible I advise against leaving anything of value, for any time at all, at this lodge

Room Tip: the bungalows are birdy

The best thing about Selva Verde Lodge is the location. Location. Location. Location. Lots of birds can be seen from the resort grounds, as well as other wildlife. You are a short distance from the bio-reserve (the resort charges $45 round-trip for transportation), which was definitely worth the trip. A great deal could be charged, which helped at the end of our trip. Problems: a busy, noisy highway runs through the center of the resort grounds. We were warned on Tripadvisor to choose either the bungalows or river suites. We chose the bungalows because they were supposed to be the farthest away from traffic. These are older units, showing wear and tear, had no view from the room, and the windows (some barred) did not opened. There was a ceiling fan and air-conditioning (apparently the bungalows were the only rooming option with air-conditioning). As for the view: there was a small screened-in porch with a tiny table and two metal chairs, plus outside wooden benches built into the front deck. The screened-in porch had floor boards missing, which obviously negated the advantage of screening. We went in early March so bugs were not a problem, but neither was there a view from the screened-in porch. The benches faced the cabin walls so those served more for socializing than watching nature. To get down to any birding site in the morning took some walking. Had we to do it over, we would pick the river suites which looked newer, had the river to drown out road noise, hammocks on the decks, nice breezes, and were in the midst of great birding, right out the door or from the porch. Biggest problem we had with Selve Verde: our food options. We both had dietary issues but arrived at the resort feeling we could surely find enough off the "buffet" to get by. The buffet offered two main courses, vegetables/fruits, and the same salad fixings each meal. Other than dirty rice, salsa, and local fruit juices, I saw little that looked like regional cooking. Small dessert plates with small dessert portions were brought around after lunch/dinner. Since I'm non-gluten, I gave mine to my husband which gave him a more reasonable portion. The buffet food itself was disappointing, like college dormitory food. We ate one meal at the Italian restaurant downstairs (which serves mostly pasta and pizza). With my gluten allergies, I was grateful to find a Caesar salad with grilled chicken, and we would have been content to eat there for the next few meals.Though the downstairs menu lists lunch and dinner, whenever we tried to sign up for lunch we were told only the buffet upstairs was available. You MUST sign up in advance for meals. Had we to do it over, when we visited the bio-reserve for a morning tou, we would have asked our transportation guide to come back to pick us up after lunch, and we would have stayed at the reserve. Amazing smells came from their restaurant, making it was hard to come back to the mediocre buffet food. Had we visited this resort first it might have made a better impression on us, but it was a letdown after our two previous resorts. Still, it was great for birds and wildlife.

Room Tip: Stick with the river suites

Dear

On behalf of everyone here at Selva Verde we would like to thank you for the days you spent with us in the Sarapiqui area.

In our over 29 years in operation we have come to greatly value the feedback of all our guests, especially those who were not completely satisfied with their experience. We noted from your comments in tripadvisor that you felt something was missing from your stay, and we would very much appreciate any suggestions or criticisms you may have so that we can better cater our services to our current and future guests.

Acoording to your comments on TripAdvisor, you were not really happy with the bungalows. The bungalow is one of our kind of rooms, located far from the main areas the restaurants, bar and reception, located strategic far in the forest to offer more privacy and a more tropical experience, in our web site and when making the reservations, our staff advice on the location of the bungalows; about the troubles on the room you mention we are checking on it and fixing if needed. About the food, the restaurants, including the buffet works with reservations, as an ecolodge we need to know at least one hour in advance if people are joining us for any meal, this is our policie, and is information given by our reception during the check in, whe cook for the ones wuth reservations because we do not want to waste food, as part of our sustainable policies. About gluten free and food restrictions, we can manage that if we have the information, so please if you advice us during your reservation, check in or during the meal times, we will offer you a special meal according to your diet or allergies, this is what we do with all our guests when we get the information.
We are everyday during the meal times at the buffet, so we want in this case of situations, you speak to us during your stay, and if there is trouble solve it at the moment to make you feel more comfortable and give you the happiest experience.
We do not expect to be a 5 stars hotel, however quality for us is very important, so we want everyone to feel at home in a familiar style restaurant and lodge, our mission is to give people a rainforest experience in a rustic and confortable place where to rest, to try the local food (our menu is very costa rican) and to explore the forest.

the best

Staying in the hotel in the midst of the rainforest was a truly memorable experience. The lodges are on stilts overlooking the river and the environment really comes to life after dark with a multiplicity of noisy frogs, insects, geckos etc. The room are spacious and comfortable if perhaps the curtains do not afford the total privacy one might expect. The main drawback is the restaurant which has a somewhat 'canteeny' feel with food and service nothing special.

Selva Verde is a beautiful property set in lush jungle. Our spacious and comfortable room was in a four-plex near the river. Birds sang outside and we awoke each morning to the sound of howler monkeys calling.

Sergio Arias and his staff were friendly and helpful and took care of our every need--including fixing a flat tire. The nature guides were fun and very knowledgeable. Eliam extended the length of our hike when he saw that we were genuinely interested in the local flora and fauna. My only suggestion for Selve Verde would be more local dishes offered in the dining room--but perhaps that is driven by demand.

Our trip was both business and pleasure. Selva Verde was a "time-out" from launching my new book "Turning Turtles in Tortuguero: Stories From the Origins of Sea Turtle Conservation". Though far from the sea, the staff at Selva Verde was interested and enthusiastic about the book.

Costa Rica is an amazing country. My next trip there will include another stay at Selva Verde.

This was the surprise of our trip to Costa Rica. Travelling with a four year old we decided to break up drives between locations and stay here. So glad we did.

The grounds are amazing and you don't have to leave as they offer tours of primary forest. We did a night and day tour. Guides were amazing and knowledgable.

Rooms were large clean and comfortable. Area was stunning and all staff were friendly and eager to please. Restaurant on site is good and had great bird watching. Enjoy

I stayed for a total of 7 nights, staying at another place in between the 3 night stay and a 4 night stay. The birding and photography was wonderful as well as monkeys and frogs. I only ate the breakfast, fruit and toast for me. I brought instant soup and granola bars for lunch and dinner. Just didn't want all the calories from the buffet.
Many positives for the Lodge, the employees, the grounds and the swim pool. The house keepers do a great job of cleaning your room and making sure you have what you need. Big thanks!
A few Cons: Road noise is a big one. The trucks and their break noise is unbelievable as well as the other road noise.
The rooms have paper thin walls, so you can hear everything, and I mean everything. As a solo traveler, I suppose I need to make more noise so my neighbors realize you can hear all the talking at 11:30 pm and then at 4 am. The rooms are set up as blocks of 4 so you will have at least 2 rooms to listen to. one set of neighbors did realize they needed to keep their voices down and to take off their boots before going into their room. So we suffered through 3 nights of boot noise and I think a jazzercise class on one night. Across the busy road is bungalows the resort owns, not sure about the noise level in them.
I took many great pictures but needed to get sleep so moved on to a less noisy place. A botanical garden is across the street, but again the road noise is so bad, it was hard to relax and enjoy it.
Would I go again? Yes, but for 2 nights at a time so I can get sleep in between. I also wish they wouls allow you to go across the bridge to hike by your self.

Room Tip: Ask for a room next to the river, many did and did not get it, but maybe you will.
