this is where the concept of eco lodge must have been invented. the cabins were great. monkeys in the trees and lots of birds. we saw a tree full of toucans!! their walks and trips were over the top. the guides were totally dedicated and informed. the guides even gave slide presentations on various subjects. we got to meet the founder jovanna holbrook. the gardens were well maintained and loaded with birds. and the food was over the top. pasta dishes to die for and brick oven pizza. great salads and fruits. we were able to carb up for our jungle adventures. very reasonable prices too. if you go to costa rica don't miss this place. oh yeah, one of the best thing we did in our lives was the frog walk. night walking in the jungle and discovering the elusive glass frogs amoung many others. two species non the less. the guides were so sensitive to the enviornment that they would return the frogs to the exact area where they picked them up for examination. even if it was a 100 yards away, through streams and thick jungle. amazing!!

Room Tip: any room is great but a river room is closer to the lodge. but being in the cabins gave us a lot of...

The lodge is set up to offer a rainforest experience in relaxing and comfortable digs. The patio by the bar area and the upper balcony outside the dining area offer lovely, peaceful places to look out on the river flowing out back, as well as the wealth of birdlife attracted to well-stocked feeding stations. The river offers a fun Class-II-rapid run for white-water rafting. The suspended bridge from the hotel over the river to the preserve on the other side allows views of the canopy and understory from above. I was only disappointed that the gate to the preserve on the other side was locked when we were there so I never had a chance to see the primary rainforest. The food was fine, but maybe not quite as good as we experienced at other lodgings on our tour of Costa Rica. We especially appreciated the free guest computer in the reception area, since this was the time when the Blizzard of '13 was wreaking havoc in New England. Overall, I loved the eco-consciousness of this lodge, although the noisy ice machine outside our room did seem a bit contrary to the spirit of getting close to nature. I would suggest moving the ice machines to the reception area, or eliminating them altogether.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the ice machines.

This is an excellent hotel for birdwatchers. Feeding platforms within the hotel grounds and in front of the restaurant are a guarantee for a show every morning.

The meals, in buffet style, are excellent with a good choice.

During our stay, we made several night walks across the bridge with a guide from the hotel and we also visited the La Selva Biological Station.

Room Tip: The rooms close to the river have less noise from road traffic and other guests. If you really like...

For a first time experience in the rain forest, Selva Verde is a great place to start. The lodgings are somewhat rustic but have all the basic amenities (except air conditioning, which is a challenge in this hot and humid environment for us gringos). The rooms are large and comfortable, very clean with modern amenities. Due to the heat many of the windows are simply screen-covered openings in the wall - that is, they cannot be shut. But Selva Verde is quiet enough because the density of lodge rooms is very low. The only real noise to reach a disturbing level comes from the howler monkeys waking us up at 5:30 but, hey, you want an early start on the wildlife anyway. The rooms are clustered in groups of 4, and every room has two outside walls, making it possible to bring in breezes in the evening.

The food at Selva Verde is served in a large open-air (but screened in) dining room, buffet style. There was enough selection to keep us from getting bored during our 3 days there. The dining room is on an upper level, giving a good view of the birds and animals at the edge of the nearby forest. Most mornings you can see toucans feeding just outside the dining room.

The overall layout of the lodge has all the rooms elevated above the forest floor on pilings, connected by walkways. This probably solves problems of drainage, termites and mildew, and also means the lodge isn't a physical barrier to the movement of the animals.

From the lodge there is a pedestrian suspension bridge (one of those Costa Rican heart-stoppers for those with a problem of heights) leading to trails that go deeper into the forest. We took one of those trails on a rainy late afternoon and found it quite a challenge, but worth taking for the direct exposure to the plant life.

There's not much I could object to at Selva Verde and would go back to take advantage of some of the local activities I missed.

We recently returned from a wonderful five-night stay. The lodge arranged some great birding trips to local sites, and we went to La Selva twice. Selva Verde is a great base for some terrific birding, and their guide Ivan is outstanding. We stayed in the bungalows, across the busy highway and up a hill, and were very glad we did, even though it did get a bit tiresome walking back and forth (it took about 10-15 minutes each way, and was uphill so slower in heat of day). The bungalows are more removed and more private feeling, and the air conditioning was great! I think evenings would be ok with or without it, but we really liked having AC for siesta breaks in the middle of the day. (AC also meant that we could wash our clothes and that they would dry -- a major issue in humid conditions). We never failed to see something really interesting on our way to or from the bungalows -- beautiful trogons, woodcreepers, thrushes and hummingbirds or capuchin monkeys, baby and adult armadillos. The bungalows area was also a great location to see the great green macaws fly overhead, and listen to parrots squabble and find beautiful woodpeckers and little tinamous around the cottage. Around the lodge, the feeders were incredible for close-up views of toucans, aracaris, and other beautiful birds. The howler monkeys also came down to the feeder area a couple times. The feeder is great for photography. We did the night walk and the primary forest walk and those were great.
We had some dinners in the buffet area, and they were pretty good with fresh salads and nice soups. We ate in the restaurant too, and that food was better, and not that expensive.. it was easier to eat light there. I wish there had been a lighter lunch option, and I wish there had been more storage area in the rooms.. but these are small concerns that might warrant a 4.5 star rating instead of a 5, but the opportunity to experience such biodiversity in such a beautiful natural setting is the main reason we went, and we loved it!

Wonderful trails through the rainforest.....red-eyed tree frogs, poison dart frogs, blue-jean frogs--a wealth of macro-photography opportunities!!! The food was excellent! There are many choices for optional walks and river adventures! We photographed toucans, toucanettes and howler monkeys!
