A little bit off from the main road is this lovely hotel. The grounds are excellent for wandering around during which time you can see various frogs, birds, insects and reptiles at close view. Breakfast is a delight from the food point of view, but also the entertainment from the bird feeders. We were in room 37 on the hill above reception which was quiet and had a lovely open view from the veranda. Some of the other rooms near the pool appeared a little closed in.

Visited for one night in January en route to Arenal. I love birdwatching and this spot is great if you wanted to make it your base for a birding trip into the rainforest. At breakfast they leave fruit out for the birds attracting some nice species. But for us it was fine for just one night: the rooms are simple and slightly dated decor and the hotel was virtually deserted giving it a slightly eery empty feel. The food was very good both dinner and breakfast were delicious and moresome. The staff are the highlight: so welcoming and friendly, and being family owned and run really shows. Top notch customer service! The gardens are lovely and the pool a welcome refresh after an active day. All in all would recommend using as a base to expore this region, but if you have sensitive hearing the trucks on the main road may still be a little disturbing at night, despite being well set back from the road. Room suggestion: ask for one with a good view!

The Ara Ambigua Lodge is convenient to activities in the Sarapiqui area and provides comfortable lodging and good food. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are clean and roomy. There are different types of accomodations in three different areas; we we up a small hill from reception in ground level rooms, and did not see the others.

The room was big with 2 double beds and good air con. A fridge would have been nice. WIFI is only available in the hotel lobby and a computer is available if you don't have your own. A reasonable size pool (very warm) was great and we pretty much had it to ourselves. Good breakfast, we were visiting with a small group and so a buffet was provided just for our group (10 people) this was very mediocre and I would have preferred to have been able to choose from the menu. Large gardens which you appear to be free to roam about, lots of flora, birds (they are encouraged to visit at breakfast with fruit left outside the restaurant to attract them).

After driving 400 meters down a “gravel road” you come to a beautiful place in the jungle. At the front desk you are immediately greeted with a warm smile, checked in and shown to your room. We stayed in 3a and 3b which were wonderful rooms that have an inside door that attaches them. This was wonderful since we had our children with us and it gave them the feeling of having "their own room". This room is right in front of the walk to the pool but is still very quite. Each of the rooms had an AC unit, TV and bathroom. We had no odor issues that one of the other reviewers mentioned.

Each day we went to the open air restaurant where the staff was always happy and very helpful. The food was amazing. Most nights we were there (3 in total), locals would come to the restaurant for dinner and/or to play pool. The atmosphere is very welcoming and is like walking into a group of old friends.

The grounds are amazingly beautiful. The family that owns/runs the place takes great care in preserving the environment which gives you the feeling of being in the middle of the jungle. There are many paths on the property to wonder around, one of the paths takes you to two lakes where you may see caimans (we did); another path takes you up towards the restaurant and off to one side is a path to the frog garden. We went to the frog garden during the day and saw many frogs. We were encouraged to go at night to see different frogs but we never managed to have time to do so.

While we were there we got to take part in the “Plantemos un Arbol” program where visitors get to plant a tree on the property. This was a great joy for our children. I can’t express enough how wonderful, friendly and polite the staff is. We will defiantly be staying at this hotel again.

I love this lodge. I have stayed here twice and would easily stay here again and again. The grounds are beautiful. The paths to the rooms seem to be cut right out of all the flora. There are 3 different groupings of rooms. One group is down by the pool: alot of these rooms have balconies, and are more tropical cabin type rooms. Beautiful. The second set are on the path above those rooms. These have a lodgey feel to them, but are more of a basic hotel room. The third set is above the front office, and I have never stayed there. Last year, only the third set had airconditioning, but this year, all three sets have airconditioning in them. There are also tv's in all rooms, and some rooms have refrigerators.

As I said the grounds are beautiful. Well manacured, and full of wildlife that you can hear and see. The sounds are all around you and it's beautiful. Equally beautiful is the pool. There are two levels to the pool, and a fountain! Gorgeous and clean.

The food is delicious. The bar is great. They have a pool table as well. The staff is incredible. It is a family run lodge and most employees are family. They are extremely helpful and always polite ! I just can't stress enough how helpful and courteous they are. The main office also has a computer for your use, and a tiny shop for costa rica clothes. They also used to (didn't get to visiti it this year) have a frog garden as well for you to look for and spot the (mostly poisonous) colorful frogs.

If you stay here, you will be pleasantly satisfied.

We stoped at the restaurant and the waitress was incredible nice and friendly and invited us to walk the trails along the property, what we did.while walking the cleaning personnel invited us to see the rooms that we saw very nice, confortable and clean in the middle of the forest. The property is very nice and with lots of flowers that we enjoyed taking pictures. We had a mechanical problem with our car that the brother of the owner of the place helped us to fix right away and made us feel welcomed. Definetly wehave to go back and stay there!!!
