“I found the value and service excellent”
Reviewed July 20, 2009

We used this as a dropping off point in and out of
SJO. We felt it was great value for the money, clean, friendly service. No problems with the Shuttle. Food was excellent with a first class buffet breakfast, a great dinner from Chef Hazel. I can agree with all of the previous reviews, and I wouldn't advocate it as a vacation resort, but for the business traveller, or as a place to wait a departing flight, or a tour pickup, it was just fine.
Only one tiny problem, we are early risers, and they don't start the coffee pot until 7 am, but they didn't complain when we made our own using their outdoor brewer.
Two issues...It is a noisy area, but we slept like babies, and what the heck, I like roosters who take their job seriously. Also, I am a walker and I tromped all around the area during daylight areas and never felt at all threatened.
We like the place, not pretentious at all, but it lived up to everything they advertised, and the guidebooks advised. We will definitely use them on every trip.

My wife and I have been to Costa Rica a number of times and we have stayed at the Hotel La Riviera a number of times. We generally us this hotel as a home base. It is great for staying on your arrival and departure nights. The shuttle service is nice also. In Costa Rica most things are more or less last minute. I was not suprised about the other reviewer comenting about calling aheead of time for a pick upat the airport and then having to call again when they arrived. This is pretty much a given. Its kind of a frame of mind that you have to get into that enables you to enjoy the trip that much more.

A couple of foods that we enjoy when we go to CR are Mamones Chinos ( fruit similar to Lychee), and Torta Chileana w/ coffee. The Torta Chileana is cake that is served at a chain cafe, "Spoon", located throughout the country. Give them a try.

We booked with La Riviera because of its closeness to the airport, and the fact that they provided a shuttle. Our room was clean, but you could see where someone had written grafitti above the bed, and the hotel attempted to paint over it. The door to our patio was encased in metal bars, but the window above the shower was broken, so it really didn't seem all that safe. The walls were paper thin, and we could hear everything going on in the lobby. The restaurant was closed, and we left too early to see what the breakfast was like. The street outside the hotel was very noisey with vehichles, sirens, and barking dogs. I would look elsewhere if I'm ever in San Jose again.

Having read the previous four reviews, I'd like to agree and disarree with some of the points that were made. I am sitting in the dining rm of Hotel La Riviera right now.

Safety of area: This neighborhood looks to me like a nice middle class neighborhood. Five minutes from here is a very upscale open shopping center with an excellent Italian restaurant among other stores and restaurants. Barbed wire and security fences are a fact of life in urban/close to urban neighborhoods in most non-wealthy countries I've been in. Face it- you are obviously rich (relatively) while a fair number of the people around you are relatively poor. You won't see this kind of obvious attention to security outside of the metropolitan area.

Attentive Service:
The pick-up bus made us wait too. But on the other hand, the driver took us to the shopping center so we could get some food to bring back to the hotel and she waited patiently for us. I don't know if we could have arranged this if we didn't have a pretty good command of Spanish, tho.
The desk didn't bother to volunteer to give us the TV remote and we had to go down and get it-- same thing with the WiFi password. Nice but laissez-faire (sp?) would describe it.
The service in the dining room is excellent.

Noise: Very noisy. Crying babies, rude early-risers, cars and trucks.
Room: attractive, nicely painted, clean except for suitcase marks on the paint.
Bed: not a super deluxe pillow-top, but I found it very comfortable.
BUT BUT BUT - the bottom sheet was too small and came off the bed revealing a clean bare mattress. I find this to be particularly disgusting and the direct opposite of what decent hospitality would require.
ON THE OTHER HAND - I checked out the price of the Holiday Inn Express near the car rental places and it was twice as expensive.
So--- it's your choice: $76 with a good breakfast and noise and sheet problems, or $140 for a Holiday Inn that, for all I know, could have the same sheet and noise problems and a worse breakfast (or maybe not!)

We booked La Riviera because we were only staying overnight between flights and it was close to the airport and the price included transport from and to the airport. Me and my friends stayed there three times during our trip and every time we emailed the day before our arrival to confirm time and place for the pickup. Sylvia at La Riviera answered and confirmed they would be there, but not once they showed up! All three times we waited about 30 minutes before some kind Tico helped us by calling the hotel and then they showed up 10-15 minutes later. The transportation part of the offer is such a joke! The hotel is nice enough, but the beds are quite uncomfortable and the area is really noicy with roosters, dogs and traffic. The area doesn't feel that safe, all houses are surrounded by walls with barb wire, but it felt safe enough when we went out to eat one night (the hotel restaurant was closed). Since the transportation was a big reason we booked this hotel in the first place, I am really disappointed. Next time we'll book something else and just take a cab.

  • Liked — Breakfast was ok, lots of TV channels
  • Disliked — Pickup didn't work, uncomfortable bed, noisy, neighborhood seemed unsafe

This hotel was recommended to us (and booked) through Dollar Car Rental -- it was a disaster. Also, we probably paid too much but we were going on Dollar's recommendation. They've done a lot of work on the exterior of this hotel to make it look classy but the rooms were horrible. The beds were very uncomfortable (one matress on a steel frame), there was no air conditioning so the room was stuffy, sticky, and musty, there was mold on the ceiling of the shower. The walls were paper thin. Someone checked in at midnight and we heard everything going on until they went to sleep. Dogs were barking, trucks and motorcycles sounded like they were in the courtyard. The restraunt only served a limited menu (chef was sick) and it took forever to get our food. Our flight left early so they didn't have breakfast available. As for safety, the property is behind a gate though not in the best neighborhood. More importantly, the rooms do not have any safety devices for the doors -- we had to cram our suitcase under the doorknob to feel some level of safety.

I spent over two weeks in Costa Rica and this hotel was a highlight of my trip.

The customer service was excellent and the property is very well kept with a beautiful courtyard featuring a pool and restaurant. Please keep in mind that you're not in a 1st world country, compared to other properties in Costa Rica is one is safe, clean and affordable.

This property is not a Hilton (there is one a few blocks away), but if you are looking for value, with nice amenities in a safe environment, I highly recommend this property.
