This is by far the best alternative I have found for business around the airport or the American Free Trade Zone. The hotel itself is a large, beautiful old building, traditional in style with a wonderful and genuine plantation ambience. The hotel has multiple levels and terraces which look out over landscaped gardens and a driving range. For a light snack late in the first evening, I went for a Marriott burger, normally the least worse thing on a Marriott bar menu. This was one of the best burgers that I have ever eaten. ( I had one the next night as well). Also recommended is the separate Cafe in an annex to the Hotel. It serves great coffee and really excellent confectionery. The hotel has a couple of alternative restaurants that I did not try. The hotel is set by itself, so you will need a taxi if you want to go out, but if you are looking for a place to retreat after a busy day - just perfect.

We appreciate your review, our hotel is a collection of hacienda attributes from Costa Rica and throughout Latin America.

Hacienda is Spanish for a vast ranch, a large estate or a plantation in spanish speaking countries.

At the Costa Rica Marriott you can experience a culinary experience in our restaurants, pamper your self at Kuö Spa the best spa in the city or just enjoy our confortable fully equiped rooms.

We look forward to have you back soon and provide you with a unique Costa Rican experience.

This Marriott property is excellent. It is elegant, traditional and tastefully decorated, and the staff is well trained and attentive. The grounds are very nice, particularly for San Jose, and the pools are also quite nice. We stayed at another Marriott property on a beautiful tropical island more recently where the staff was wonderful and the location was amazing, but both my wife and I remarked that it would have been perfect had the Costa Rica Marriott San Jose actually been located there instead. The only letdown we experienced at the San Jose Marriott was the service we received in the restaurant when the entire waitstaff first ignored us and then forgot about us after bringing half our silverware; we said nothing to anyone, but merely got up and left after sitting there for 45 minutes or so. The manager searched for us the next day and apologized profusely when he found us, offering us free drinks and food to make up for the night before. We had no intent to complain as we were preparing to leave (and exhausted and burned and bruised from a terrible car accident the previous day), but considered it a nice and professional gesture of him to do that. Overall we were very happy with this hotel and would recommend it to anyone traveling to San Jose.

Room Tip: Choose a high floor facing the pool and golf course.

The facility is very nice. Service they try very hard. Each night we stayed there was an event... conferences, weddings, baby showers etc..which made the place a bit noisy and more difficult to navigate . But if youre looking for a place near airport that offers great accomodations, hard to find much better.

This is a first-rate property with lots to offer -- but the experience is marred by what is, at least during our visit, a truly awful restaurant.

The hotel itself a a big, beautiful building that I'm told was a former coffee plantation. The grounds are large and lush, with a couple of crystal clear pools, a spa, a lovely terrace, a nice coffee shop, driving range, etc. It truly is gorgeous, with the mountains as the backdrop.

Rooms are nice sized and well appointed. The rustic "plantation" feel lends itself nicely to the look and feel - and as the result, fixtures and trappings don't feel dated or worn really.

Service is gracious and friendly, and generally attentive. Bit of a "Tico Time" discount for any expectations in country, though.

Location is hit and miss. Depending on what your plans are, its a bit out of the way, but the semi-rural (though well within city limits) setting is what gives the hotel its charm and feel. If you plan to walk anywhere, though, this won't be the hotel to do it from. You'll be cabbing or car-ing it.

Was a little odd when we checked in and got to our room to find nothing but lotion and a shower cap... no other toiletries or soaps. Easily resolved with a call to the front, but still kind of oddball.

Choose a room off the beaten path. Because of the open hallway design and the preponderance of tile and brick, you can get quite a bit of noise coming out of the hallways. Several members of our party commented on it and during our second stay at the property (we were there twice), we chose a more secluded room, on the top floor, down on the end. Much quieter.

My biggest gripe is with the restaurant, Antigua. It was truly horrible during our entire stay. We ate so much great food during our Costa Rican adventure - everywhere from 5-star restaurants to street food... and never once had a bad meal - until we arrived at the CR Marriott. The food in this restaurant was literally vile. The night we ate in the restaurant itself, we ordered and then watched with trepidation as LITERALLY every table around us returned at least 1 dish that was served to them (table of 4 to our left returned, more than once, every dish brought out). Sure enough, when our food arrived, it was quite bad. We had a couple of burgers - mediocre but edible - and two seafood pastas. The seafood pasta was literally inedible. It tasted like all of the seafood had gone bad, but been cooked, regardless. When the waiter came over and noticed none of the food had been touched, he didn't even ask if there was a problem, or inquire as to the issue - simply asked if we were done and proceeded to clear the table. Considering that it was simultaneously the worst and most expensive meal we'd had in Costa Rica made the disappointment of the quality even more disappointing.

After that we tried room service twice, avoiding the restaurant directly, but both efforts were mediocre. Nothing as heinous as the seafood pasta, but still highly mediocre.

Side note - we did try the other restaurant - La Isabella - and it was much better, interestingly.

In short, a great property, with an otherwise excellent stay marred by truly awful food and restaurant service.

I'd recommend - but would recommend you avoid the hotel food. That said, you probably should do that anyways, as San Jose has some truly amazing restaurants.

Room Tip: Go for the top level, towards one end or the other, to avoid the loud noise of hallway traffic...

Thank you very much for your valuable comments, feedback from our customers is the key to provide a high quality service and improve eventual opportunity areas.

We are glad you enjoyed our facilities; our concept is based on majestic colonial hacienda rising from a lush coffee plantation located near the city but away from the urban crowd.

At the Costa Rica Marriott we are committed to exceed your expectations, for this reason we are truly sorry about the restaurant experience you are sharing with us.

We will take immediate actions to avoid any future inconveniences and offer you a gratifying experience in you upcoming visits.

Your business is very valuable for us, we look forward to have you back soon and offer you a memorable and pleasant stay.

Honestly, this hotel was great, but it really does feel like you are at Epcot, which is about what I expected, so this isn't necessarily a bad review. The service was wonderful, reception was great, and room service was fabulous. The rooms were clean and it is very conveniently located to the airport. This is definitely a Marriott property, and it feels like you are in Florida rather than CR. If you are looking for something with more charm and less commercialism, try Hotel Grano de Oro, which is wonderful. If you are looking for American comfort, this is your place.

We had a quick anniversary getaway. It was amazing. They even gave us a bottle of wine with a cheese table as a gift for our anniversary. The place is wonderful, the rooms are very clean and comfortable, the pool is nice, the restaurants are really delicious (although a bit expensive) and the spa/gym is top class.

Room Tip: The best rooms are the ones with pool view
