This is a first-rate property with lots to offer -- but the experience is marred by what is, at least during our visit, a truly awful restaurant.

The hotel itself a a big, beautiful building that I'm told was a former coffee plantation. The grounds are large and lush, with a couple of crystal clear pools, a spa, a lovely terrace, a nice coffee shop, driving range, etc. It truly is gorgeous, with the mountains as the backdrop.

Rooms are nice sized and well appointed. The rustic "plantation" feel lends itself nicely to the look and feel - and as the result, fixtures and trappings don't feel dated or worn really.

Service is gracious and friendly, and generally attentive. Bit of a "Tico Time" discount for any expectations in country, though.

Location is hit and miss. Depending on what your plans are, its a bit out of the way, but the semi-rural (though well within city limits) setting is what gives the hotel its charm and feel. If you plan to walk anywhere, though, this won't be the hotel to do it from. You'll be cabbing or car-ing it.

Was a little odd when we checked in and got to our room to find nothing but lotion and a shower cap... no other toiletries or soaps. Easily resolved with a call to the front, but still kind of oddball.

Choose a room off the beaten path. Because of the open hallway design and the preponderance of tile and brick, you can get quite a bit of noise coming out of the hallways. Several members of our party commented on it and during our second stay at the property (we were there twice), we chose a more secluded room, on the top floor, down on the end. Much quieter.

My biggest gripe is with the restaurant, Antigua. It was truly horrible during our entire stay. We ate so much great food during our Costa Rican adventure - everywhere from 5-star restaurants to street food... and never once had a bad meal - until we arrived at the CR Marriott. The food in this restaurant was literally vile. The night we ate in the restaurant itself, we ordered and then watched with trepidation as LITERALLY every table around us returned at least 1 dish that was served to them (table of 4 to our left returned, more than once, every dish brought out). Sure enough, when our food arrived, it was quite bad. We had a couple of burgers - mediocre but edible - and two seafood pastas. The seafood pasta was literally inedible. It tasted like all of the seafood had gone bad, but been cooked, regardless. When the waiter came over and noticed none of the food had been touched, he didn't even ask if there was a problem, or inquire as to the issue - simply asked if we were done and proceeded to clear the table. Considering that it was simultaneously the worst and most expensive meal we'd had in Costa Rica made the disappointment of the quality even more disappointing.

After that we tried room service twice, avoiding the restaurant directly, but both efforts were mediocre. Nothing as heinous as the seafood pasta, but still highly mediocre.

Side note - we did try the other restaurant - La Isabella - and it was much better, interestingly.

In short, a great property, with an otherwise excellent stay marred by truly awful food and restaurant service.

I'd recommend - but would recommend you avoid the hotel food. That said, you probably should do that anyways, as San Jose has some truly amazing restaurants.

Room Tip: Go for the top level, towards one end or the other, to avoid the loud noise of hallway traffic...

Thank you very much for your valuable comments, feedback from our customers is the key to provide a high quality service and improve eventual opportunity areas.

We are glad you enjoyed our facilities; our concept is based on majestic colonial hacienda rising from a lush coffee plantation located near the city but away from the urban crowd.

At the Costa Rica Marriott we are committed to exceed your expectations, for this reason we are truly sorry about the restaurant experience you are sharing with us.

We will take immediate actions to avoid any future inconveniences and offer you a gratifying experience in you upcoming visits.

Your business is very valuable for us, we look forward to have you back soon and offer you a memorable and pleasant stay.

Honestly, this hotel was great, but it really does feel like you are at Epcot, which is about what I expected, so this isn't necessarily a bad review. The service was wonderful, reception was great, and room service was fabulous. The rooms were clean and it is very conveniently located to the airport. This is definitely a Marriott property, and it feels like you are in Florida rather than CR. If you are looking for something with more charm and less commercialism, try Hotel Grano de Oro, which is wonderful. If you are looking for American comfort, this is your place.

We had a quick anniversary getaway. It was amazing. They even gave us a bottle of wine with a cheese table as a gift for our anniversary. The place is wonderful, the rooms are very clean and comfortable, the pool is nice, the restaurants are really delicious (although a bit expensive) and the spa/gym is top class.

Room Tip: The best rooms are the ones with pool view

An unexpected oasis between the airport and San Jose.

A total surprise, wonderful !! The hotel staff are the most kind, gracious, competent & helpful that I have ever experienced in more than 20 years of extensive travelling (business & holidays). This includes staying in all the very best, well known & extremely well respected hotels.

The team at the Costa Rica Marriott have beaten all the exclusive, boutique & top chain hotels. there is nothing that they can't willing organise for you.

I CAN'T IT RECOMMEND MORE ... JUST TRY IT............

Room Tip: 6 th floor over-looking the pool & the beautiful vista of the volcanos beyond. The changing light of the landscape during the day is breath taking

From check-in to check-out the service and hospitality were unsurpassed. When we gave our driver the name and address of our destination he beamed, saying it was the best hotel in San Jose. He was right! Breakfast buffet was included in room rate and was first rate. Grounds are located nearer the airport and away from less safe areas of San Jose. Staff was also very helpful arranging day trips and safe movement and transportation around city. Highly recommend this facility.

Room Tip: Request top floor room on mountain side.
