San Jose Marriott was a great option for our first and last night in Costa Rica. It wasn't an "authentic Costa Rican" experience by a long shot, but it was a very nice, very comfortable hotel.
We arrived at 8:00 PM to SJO and stayed the first night at the San Jose Marriott. Someone from the hotel was waiting outside with a sign for us (amongst the dozens of other people with signs). We had called the hotel a couple days before to tell them what time we were arriving (I think you have to do this to guarantee the shuttle will be there for you). Ended up we just missed the shuttle, so the hotel representative put us in a cab that the hotel paid for (I thought that was nice, they could have had us wait 30 minutes).
The Marriott was gorgeous. It is not near anything else, but it served us well for the first and last nights of the trips. Beer was expensive for Costa Rican standards ($5.50 for an Imperial). Breakfast was reasonable ($6 for a really big, really good typical tico breakfast… though they try and push the $18 buffet), dinner a little more expensive ($9 for a hamburger, $12 for a casado). Pool was nice, there was also a driving range. Also, bring your own bottle of water! It was $7 for a bottle at the hotel!
We took a $20 cab ride...San Jose Marriott was a great option for our first and last night in Costa Rica. It wasn't an "authentic Costa Rican" experience by a long shot, but it was a very nice, very comfortable hotel.
