Wyndham San Jose Herradura Hotel & Convention Center
Reviewed September 28, 2009

On our arrival day, we stayed here for the afternoon and evening. We found this to be a very average hotel. The pools were pretty nice though. Not really safe to walk around that area and we were bored that afternoon. Staff wasn't overly helpful when inquiring about where to visit in San Jose for the afternoon. Restaurant was better than expected!

DON'T purchase phone card from machine in hotel lobby -- they aren't the government standard ICE cards and it will not work anywhere in costa rica! We got ripped off $10 and lots of frustration to figure out the card isn't accepted anywhere!!

I loved this hotel. It was very nice. My room had a beautiful view. My daughters loved it. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a small mall on the opposite to the hotel. We have to walk across a bridge. Even though one of the staff said, it is not safe to walk on the bridge, we did. We were fine. We just walked fast and looked around. There is a mexican restaurant in the mall. The food was excellent. The people are very nice everywhere.

We found an old room with a dirty bathroom. The sockets were broken, old furniture and the room was far from the checking point.
However, another couple was given a new room with all the facilities.
So, although both coupes spent the same money on the reservations, it depends on how lucky you are to get a good or a bad room.
the hotel is far from the center of the town though it is near a mall.

We had a group of 28 graduate students on a study tour, and this hotel worked out nicely. The hotel was spacious and fairly nice - nothing extraordinary, but no problems. They are "3 leaf" certified in the Canatour sustainability rating system. There are several signs of how they are being environmentally and socially responsible.

We had good timing. The Miss Costa Rica beauty pageant was held at the hotel while we were there, and the Costa Rican national soccer team was staying at the hotel while they prepared for a World Cup qualifier. It can't be all bad if those two groups chose the hotel!

The buffet breakfast each morning (included) was good, with plenty of variety, and the restaurants at the hotel were very good (but expensive). The swimming pools are very scenic, but the water was pretty cold. The "hot" tubs looked great, but they were luke warm at best. They have an extended fitness center and three computers available for high-speed Internet access. There are charges posted for access, but we were never charged (and I think that charges don't apply after hours).

As far as location, it is fairly central but not within walking distance of much. You can take a foot bridge across the highway (to the right as you exit the hotel) to a mall. It has a big food court, and grocery, and a variety of shops - not bad, but over-priced. You need a taxi to go anywhere else ($12-20 for most destinations in the San Jose area). There are all kinds of tour opportunities (e.g., zip line in rainforest), and the busses pick you up at the hotel.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for groups. Singles or couples can find much more interesting places in the area, though (e.g., Hotel Pura Vida).

I've stayed at this hotel on four different occassions and have a wonderful stay each time. The staff is great and very helpful. The location is very easy to find being about 10 minutes from the airport.

The free breakfast is delicious. Great assortment of items and fresh fruit.

The rooms have all been very clean and well maintained.

This is really an excellent hotel. Beautiful with gardens everywhere.
Pools with waterfall and large jacuzzi. Big rooms. Free internet access in office off of lobby.
Across from mall (walk over bridge during the day only). Had the best buffet
breakfast of any of the 3 other hotels we stayed at in Costa Rica. Really exceptional food and open to pool and gardens. One other restaurant on the grounds was excellent one night and fair another night so can't recommend that. Nice atmosphere though.
Looked like a Greek island restaurant. Very good prices in any case. Order simple foods. Hummus was very good.
Very pleasant hotel.

We stayed here our 1st night in Costa Rica, then mid-tour, and then again the last night. Modern hotel with many conveniences. Free internet in the business center which we were unaware of until the last night. Several restaurants to chose from from moderately priced to expensive. Food well prepared and tasty. Several outdoor pools that we never got to try-we were too busy! Mall across a busy highway that can be accessed via a pedestrian bridge. Souvenir shop 1 block down the street past the pedestrian bridge. Nice gift shop right in the hotel where we made several purchases. Not downtown so we did not get to experience the city.
