“Best Hotel On Our 10 Day Costa Rican Vacation”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

This was our first hotel out of three that we were reserved through Costa Rican Trails and it was the best. Very clean and air conditioned rooms with a neat open air lobby and game room area. Friendly staff and great breakfast surrounded by hummingbirds and nature. Good restaurant on site. Close to airport and a good base for the Coffee Plantation and Volcano tours.

We stayed here for 2 nights after flying into the international airport and were pleasently surprised. The hotel was about a $14 cab ride from the airport. We were glad it was kind of in the 'burbs because we didn't have to listen to airplanes every five minutes. For the $88/night price I wasn't expecting much, but this place was better than any of the more expensive hotels I've stayed at.

Our room was spotless with fresh bedding, hardwood floors, a small balcony, and a nice bathroom with a walk-in shower. I just want to emphasize that the room was very clean, it's one thing I'm kind of picky about. The beds were nice and firm, and everything was rustic but very modern. The hotel has a small swimming pool, hot tub, gym, pool table, tennis courts, and computers for guests to use, plus you have wi-fi in your room.

Breakfast was included and they had fruit, juice, muffins, toast, etc. plus you could have either a traditional breakfast, pancakes, or omlet made to order. I find that eggs are a good test of a chef and ours were perfect. There is also a steak restaurant on the grounds (which were beautifully maintained!) with very friendly staff. The portions were huge, dinner was a good price, and you can charge your meals to your room. They even gave us a complimentary shot of coffee liquor one evening when it was a little busy. One thing you might want to keep in mind, though: we ate here twice and it was tasty but I might have gotten tired of eating at the same place all the time if we stayed longer.

The staff at the front desk were so polite and extremely helpful. They called a cab for us into downtown San Jose on our second day (we went to the gold museum), which was about $22. The cab they got us was cheaper than the one we took back, and we even stopped at the bank on the way in. We also needed transportation to Arenal after check-out, which they gladly arranged and, again, got us a better deal than we found online. Furthermore, they even arranged our transportation from our hotel near Arenal to our next destination. They really went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay.

My only minor complaints are that the tv was kind of small, there was no mini-fridge in our room, and because there is no carpet it echos a bit.

That said, I would defiantely stay here again and highly recommend this hotel.

If you don't fly into San Jose fairly early in the morning, or if you have to fly out on your return early in the day then you are going to have to stay in the San Jose area. First advice: Don't stay in San Jose itself if you can help it. The city is the least beautiful and least interesting place in the country. You are better off staying in the suburbs and heading out early the next day (or coming in the evening before you have to fly home). That said, I liked this Hotel so much after staying there on our first night in Costa Rica that I cancelled my reservation at the Marriott to stay here again. This is a complex where the orginal attraction was the El Rodeo Argentinian steak house. The restaurant is a local institution and has been for 30 years. The steaks are very good and the decor is very horsey. All kinds of beautiful black saddles with silver embellishments hang around the restaurant. They then added on a small boutique hotel to the complex a few years ago. There is a nice pool, a tennis court and a playground here, as well as a nice bar, a terrace to hang out on and a gated grounds with a guard at night (fairly typical and desireable anywhere in CR but especially in the San Jose area. The hotel room was very spacious, the bathroom was huge and the beds were very comfortable. The whole place was spotlessly clean. The WiFi isn't great and only can be had in public spaces but I spoke to the manager and they are working on getting a better connect through out and particularly in ever room. The breakfast is outstanding with fresh fruit, cooked to order omelets, pancakes or Gallo Pinto, and good coffee (not that easy to find in CR as most of the good stuff gets exported.) This hotel will be my place of first choice for all future travel. Special kudos to Aidrain, the really helpful staff member who gave me good advice all around.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room, easier if you are hauling a lot of luggage. The complex is gated with a...

This is very nice, clean, good staff. We started and ended our Costa Rica adventure here. I would recommend it, but remember it's far from San Jose and you'll have to eat at the hotel restaurant (not fabulous). The first night was quiet, but the last night was a Saturday night and I think there was a wedding party, it was sooo noisy I didn't sleep much. But superbly comfortable rooms somewhat makeup for that.

We arrived to a stay here after a very early morning flight to get to Costa Rica. It's a 15minute drive from the airport into a relatively suburban area of San Jose. There's plenty of parking, and a reasonably priced in house restaurant, which seems to be frequented by locals who do not stay at the hotel. We had an early checkout, and the front desk promptly arranged for a take away breakfast to be provided, instead of the usual sit down breakfast.

The rooms are large and clean, and beds were adequate. The ones away from the road are very much quiet, although in San Jose, this is a relative term.

The only minor issues with this hotel are: 1) the Wifi signal can be a bit weak in parts of the hotel, and 2) it's location. There isn't much in San Antonio de Belen, so if you don't have a car, getting around can be a problem. Otherwise, it's a reasonable choice to stay at if you are on the road and looking for a place to stop by.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road for a little bit of quiet.

We liked this hotel, the decor and cleanliness was superb as well as the front desk service. Thè only problem we encountered was that the hotel had a very high amount of noise pollution that awoke us during parts of the night and early in the morning, however we are unsure if this could be due to our room location or just a one time occurance as we booked this hotel based on the fairly good reviews below. Based on our experiencè we cancelled our return stay on the night prior to our departure and booked a higher priced room in a different hotel . For future travelers information the taxi trip is between $11-13 USD from the airport to this hotel.

Hotel and Restaurant El Rodeo in San Antonio de Belén, is always a win-win choice. Specialty is meat made well. (Not well dome meat). The restaurant is by now an old timer, but time has not made it less. We all ate "lomito," as tenderloin is known in Costa Rica. Some medium and some medium rare, all done according to request, no mistakes. Wine was discounted and very good Chilean reserved cru. Decoration is the same as when it started, Costa Rican horseriding, with all kind of de luxe riding gear. We really enjoyed a good familly lunch. Highly recommended!
