“A great place to elope!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2007

My husband & I eloped at the Peace Lodge in early March 2007 and had a wonderful time. The Peace Lodge is romantic and family-friendly at the same time--not an easy feat! I do agree with some reviews that commented on a "Disney"-like quality, but I am actually quite sensitive to that & I found the Peace Lodge fun/romantic rather than tacky. The room is just so perfect for a honeymoon. A lovely balcony with beautiful views & TWO hott ubs (one on the balcony & one in the BEAUTIFUL bathroom). The food is wonderful & the service is simply outstanding. Maria Elena is the wedding co-ordinator & is such a joy. Our wedding day was so much & we had the ceremony in front of a 120 ft waterfall. We used Marcelo Gali as the officiant and Fernando Carcamo/Brian Finch as our photographer. The hotel can refer you to them & they were both fantastic. We usually prefer a more remote spot but thought it would be best to have more amenities available for the actual wedding. If you are the same I would suggest staying here for 3 or 4 nights max. The waterfall gardens can be seen in one day, you can go on a day tour to Poas Volcano, have a day to relax--or wed! After that I would suggest going deeper into a rain forest (try the osa peninsula) or head to a remote beach. A few pieces of advice if you are thinking of eloping here: 1) Your initial contact will be with Cindy Banks (the owner) who seems to spend much of her time in the states. Once you arrive you will be working with Maria Elena. Upon arrival be sure everything you discussed with Cindy was passed on to Maria Elena. We had a small propblem with this. 2) You will be getting married in a rainforest & even in "dry season" the weather is highly unpredictable. We got lucky & had a sunny day. You have a choice of getting married at 10:30am or 4:30pm. I think you have a better chance of sun at 10:30am (although we got married at 4:30pm & it was beautiful), but I am not sure. Ask them. The ceremony does take place at a gazebo at the waterfalls so even if it does rain you will be covered. Overall the Peace Lodge is a fun, romantic, & luxurious way to do some sight-seeing in CR.

Peace Lodge is a wonderful little Lodge with exceptional owners who care about the welfare of wildlife. All the animals are rescued and some have some horrific stories but all are doing well now thanks to the kindness of the owners. At Peace Lodge you can get up close and personal with many of Costa Rica's endangered wildlife and all thanks to the owners who have rescued these beloved creatures. The aviary is wonderful and you can get up close with Toucans. Not all the animals are on public display yet, however if you are staying at Peace Lodge take the Waterfall tours and ask to go behind the scenes. The accommocations were wonderful, staff and food great. There is a little rascal of a cat who lives there named Hunter who is a delight. Don't be shocked if he shows up unannounced in your room and spends the night. He did with us for 2 nights. One thing we loved was the night time Frog tour! It was great! Be sure to take a trip to the Poas Volcano and hike their trail back to the lake. Go, have fun and enjoy the kooky decor! It is all good.

Many reviewers have mentioned the Disney-esque aspect of Peace Lodge, there is that side to the resort. Recently, however, they have gone a step further by adding an aviary to the premises right by the rooms of Peace Lodge. Why go to Costa Rica to look at a bunch of caged birds? Would you go to Africa to see elephants in a zoo? The sounds of the rainforest that you hear in the morning from the lodge are likely from caged animals and not even from the rainforest itself. This exhibit might be appropriate if it were in a zoo in the US, but why in a country where the whole point is the beauty and diversity of the rainforest? This was my second stay at Peace Lodge and it seems that they are creating a place that completely defeats the point of visiting Costa Rica. Butterflies, birds, snakes, frogs and soon (we were told) wild cats are all caged for easy viewing by tourists. Why not just go to your local zoo?

The rooms are a unique and wonderful experience. The waterfalls are beautiful. It is great to hand feed hummingbirds (free, wild hummingbirds). There are many things to recommend about Peace Lodge. However, in my opinion they have gone too far.

My husband and I stayed at La Paz for three days as part of our honeymoon in CR during the "green" aka "off " season. We stayed in a standard room which could have passed easily for honeymoon suite elsewhere. The rooms played on the rain forest theme quite well and would probably be considered a bit over the top for some folks. The size of the room is extremely large with a fireplace and several places to lounge around. The bathroom is as large as a small NYC studio with double sinks, separate shower and bath tub, waterfall, and crazy lighting. The WC was scary though, because it was a separate room in the bathroom, with a dungeon like door to compliment
the rain forest theme. The room also had a balcony overlooking the grounds, consisting of a jacuzzi, dinette, and hammock. Every morning, you can hear the humming birds have breakfast
at the balcony feeder. I wouldn’t bother paying extra for a Deluxe room unless you are craving for more jungle themes and prefer an indoor jacuzzi as opposed to outdoor on the balcony. The latter is much nicer, so that you can watch the stars while soaking.

The service here is top-notched and the staff is very accommodating.
They even set out a complimentary bottle of wine on the fireplace mantle before we arrived, when my husband told them that we were on our honeymoon. There are plenty of activities in La Paz and day trips that can be arranged by the staff. We went horseback ridding and rafting on the Sarapiqui River, roughly 1 hour away. I had the best time ever!

The food is excellent, and you cannot miss having breakfast outdoors,
while watching the exotic birds eat the bananas laid out for them on a feeding stand. Their Vista Poas restaurant is over priced for CR standards, but I would try it out at least once as the food is excellent, and if you are a NYC foodie.

The only major downside to the stay was that a mouse got into our room as soon as they sniffed out the complimentary muffins that were left by the staff for us during the turn-down service. I freaked out and could not get off the bed for an hour, but keep in mind that you are staying in a rainforest and shouldn’t be leaving food out.

I don’t recommend more than 3 days here, unless you plan to take day trips. One can only take so much of their nature park and observatories, which could easily be seen in one day.

The surprise of our trip to Costa Rica. Imaginative rooms with a great balcony and view, extremely peaceful. I was very happy with the food and found the wine list to be very satisfactory, sticking with Catena Malbecs or other Argentine wines each night. Make sure you do a day trip to Pozo Azul for a Canopy tour, very friendly and scenic.

As many have already mentioned the place is incredible from a location perspective, nearby access to several amazing waterfalls, as well as many other unique assets such as the Aviary, Trout Pond, Snake area etc.

I would reccomend a night or two, I think becuase of it's isolation, which makes it beautiful, could eventually become a negative if you stayed beyond that, since their are no other options close by for entertainment or dinner.

I would also note that becuase of the climbing and steps required to get anywhere, I would avoid it, if you have any healthcare concerns

We stayed at the Peace Lodge for two nights in February. It was a beautiful and relaxing place. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms are awesome, and the service is great. However, we did not read the fine print and at the last minute had some friends join us. We stayed in the Villa and even though the Villa sleeps 6, the rate is only based on double occupancy. We had to pay 160 dollars extra on top of the 385 for one night. I think that is ridiculous. Also, the food is made for tourists and is very American. And overpriced. And since this is the only place around, you have no choice where you can eat. But don't get me wrong, the rooms are amazing, the waterfalls are gorgeous, and the staff is friendly. Two days here was plently for us and a nice change from the beach.
