Our family of 5 (3 children ages 20, 18, 16) just spent 3 days and nights at the Peace Lodge during our week long trip to Costa Rica. We truly enjoyed everything about the Peace Lodge. I'm not a professional reviewer, so I will try to address some of the concerns that were mentioned on previous reviews (that I read before we went) and give our experience. I was most concerned about the comments saying it's "gimmicky" or "cheeky"--I see where these reviewers are coming from, but I must say we found it charming. Remember, you are in CR, on the side of a mountain, looking at a volcano in the rain forrest. So, first of all the views are incredible. Also, anything in this environment is going to be "man made"--but it is a fun theme. You feel like Jane and Tarzan in a beautifully done, clean, well decorated, incredibly landscaped complex. I much preferred this to a high polished, chrome, modern, redundant hotel. It's fun to have a waterfall shower in your bathroom-even if it is a bit Disney-like. Yes, the animal area is a "zoo", but, again, well done. Having hundreds of hummingbirds all around you and land on your fingers to feed is worth the whole trip--truly amazing. And, it's great to see the animals up close--feeding the toucans, watching the butterflies hatch, holding a tiny frog, watching the big cats fed--a nice addition to our nature walks where the naturalist finds a sloth or lizard way up in a tree and it takes a telescope to see it. We had absolutely no problems with crowds. The food was very good, no problems there. The prices are what we expected in a hotel restaurant and you can go about 3-5 miles into the small town for a cheaper local restaurant. We also stopped at a grocery on the way and got food for breakfast and lunch (there is a small fridge in the rooms) if we wanted to skip the restaurants. The bartender made great drinks and again, typical hotel prices--about $10 for the fancier/fruity drinks. The trail with the waterfalls was beautiful--yes, it is "man made" and yes there are tons of steps, but you cannot change the terrain, and call me a coward, but I'm not interested in forging my own or following a rough path in a rain forrest in central america with all the poisonous options about. And to see 4 really beautiful waterfalls within an hour walk from your hotel makes for a very nice morning exercise trek. We toured the volcano, went to a coffee plantation, and went zip lining--all fun, yes touristy, excursions, but that's what we were there for--different time together. Then, you can relax in the heated infinity pool--small, but nice--and watch the afternoon clouds roll in. One important thing we discovered is that it is cool up there--maybe high 40s at night and 60s in the day--definitely bring a jacket. The last think I want to mention is the people at the resort. They absolutely could not be nicer, friendlier, or more helpful and almost everyone spoke good English--of course we are in CR so if someone had a bit of a problem communicating with me, I put the fault on me. John was our tour guide to the volcano and coffee plantation and was tons of fun. Renald was the food/beverage supervisor and made sure we had everything just right. Byron was the bartender and waiter and could not have been more pleasant. There are many more people who made our stay fabulous, but sadly I cannot remember all their names. This is a fun, safe, friendly, lovely place.

Room Tip: The second floor rooms had the better views and a bit more privacy from the walk ways.

Started our Costa Rican adventure with a stay at the Peace Lodge. The. Folks were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was comforting and relaxing after a day of trekking about. Rooms were exquisite. The sanctuary was amazing. Feeding the toucans and then then hummingbirds, could not get enough. The trails were nice and the waterfalls were amazing. If your in the neighborhood, stop in and explore. These folks know how to make you feel at home !,

A great place and such nice staff, lots to do and loads of really cool animals to see and interact with! We really enjoyed the little pools especially in the evening as they were relaxing after a fun filled day at this magical place which we hope to return to one day in the future!

Room Tip: The villa lago is really nice and quiet.

We just spent 3 days at the Peace Lodge for my brothers wedding. It could not have been more perfect. We stayed in villa lago and it was great. My brother and his fiancé stayed in a standard room and loved it, as well. So spacious yet cozy, fireplaces, great bathrooms, large fridge, microwave, etc. great view of the trout pond and aviary. We visited all of the different animals from the butterfly release to feeding the toucans, watching the jungle cat feeding, milking cows, feeding hummingbirds, looking at the monkeys. Definitely do the night tree frog experience, very interesting. It was all awesome. Not to mention the amazing waterfalls, one of which was the site of the wedding. The staff decorated it beautifully and the reception dinner by the trout pond afterwards was so special. They really went all out to make it beautiful. The food is so good, good meat, salads, fruit, everything. The staff could not have been more friendly, helpful, and happy. A special shout out to Armando, Melanie, Jose, Melvin, Jon, Maria, Vanessa and Cynthia and everyone else who made our stay so special. I can't wait to go back!!!

We had such an exceptional experience at their other property, The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal, that we forfeited two nights at the Hyatt on the beach and drove 4 hours back to the Peace Lodge. It didn't disappoint. It was so unique. Our Monarch Villa had a stone waterfall in the shower and in the bathtub, fireplaces in every room including the Master bathroom, a four-poster bed in the Master bedroom and a loft for the kids. My kids fed wild (habituated) hummingbirds with handheld flower-shaped nectar vases and fished for trout in the trout pond and then helped clean, cook and eat them for lunch. The focus on nature and wildlife is a major attraction. Kudos to both properties for highlighting the best Costa Rica has to offer and then miraculously taking it to an even higher level. We will definitely be back! Thanks again.

Room Tip: Monarch Villa. An absolute must.

My wife and I just got back from celebrating our 25 year anniversary by spending two nights at the Peace Lodge (after being at the Springs Resort/sister property for 3 nights). We didn't know what to expect, but were hugely impressed. This was truly a unique experience and almost impossible to describe; it was like being in a huge, 5-star treehouse in the middle of the rainforest. Very quiet and low-key, but with plenty to do around the property; namely, the nearby beautiful waterfalls and animal nature preserve. We've traveled all over the world, but have never experienced anything like this. Someone recommended that we make sure to visit both of these properties, and we're so glad we did-because they are both so impressive, but in different ways. As incredible as this place was, the most impressive part was the service. Jonathan checked us in, then stayed with us for about the next hour or so, taking us around the property, showing us things, giving us way more personal attention and time than we've ever gotten--anywhere. His spoke such good English I asked him if he was American (he is Costa Rican but started speaking English at a very early age like many of them do). Once he got us to our room, Jonathan encouraged us to call on him if we needed anything throughout our stay, and we actually did a couple of times; instead of telling us the answer over the phone (like how to get the ipod station to work in the room), he'd say "I'll be down there in 5 minutes!" ... and he was! Where else do you get that kind of service? We also weren't sure what to expect food-wise, but every snack and meal we had was not just good, but excellent. I have never felt compelled to write a review on this site before, but our experience at Peace Lodge was amazing. We look forward to going back and we would enthusiastically recommend it to others!

Were fortunate to be able to visit Peace Lodge and surrounding sights. A unique facility with a very limited number of beautiful rooms in a unique setting. Walk through the nature preserve wildlife refuge and get your picture taken with toucans, hummingbirds, and butterflies as they land on you. Beautiful rescued animals have been saved and are cared for here and the absolutely gorgeous La Paz waterfall is also on the grounds. Walk the entire trail (many steps and up and down, but do it all, don't miss a view!), and get pictures at every stop. Be sure to watch for the spot where you can get 3 waterfalls in one picture! Peace Lodge is the sister-site to The Springs Resort and Spa in Arenal and boasts the same superior service, maintenance, and attention to detail. An outstanding experience, if you are able to get a reservation, do it! The staff and everything about the experience is outstanding. So much is available right on the grounds, also visit the coffee plantation and Poas volcano.

Room Tip: Every room has a view, take advantage of everything available to you for free on the grounds.
