This lodge is the ultimate in terms of luxury. The spaciousness and decor in the rooms are incredible. The bathroom is huge, with a waterfall and jungle in it. There is a jacuzzi in the bathroom as well as on the balcony. The grounds are beautiful, with lush vegetation, flowers and landscaping--a visual delight. The sanctuary for animals and birds is amazing. While we did see many of these same ones in the wild, I enjoyed seeing the variety here and so close up. The hummingbird and butterfly gardens were very special. We felt like we were in a Disney movie in the best sense. This setting is one in which you truly feel pampered.

We started our trip to Costa Rica at Peace Lodge. The 2 hr trip from San Jose airport was daunting with narrow roads and 2000ft drop offs on either side of our tires. Our room was very dimly lit with furniture in the living room less comfortable than outdoor furniture. The loud noise in our room happened to be a dehumidifier which when we called the front desk, they sent a man who was unable to communicate with us because he didn't speak English. Needless to say, we found the problem on our own and turned the dehumidifier OFF! We had a leak in our family room that was never fixed let alone looked at so we had to move the couch to watch TV so didn't get dripped on. The park with animals and beautiful waterfalls are worth seeing but not necessary to stay at Peace Lodge.

After two nights in the "Best Western of San Jose," we were ready for some luxury and character; we got it - and then some - at the Peace Lodge.

Be forewarned: the drive up to this resort from the capital city is not for the faint of heart. It's long (~2 hours), mostly winding, and the roads are atrocious. Thanks to a 2009 earthquake and the ensuing landslides/mudslides, some of the roads are barely single-lane.

One we arrived, we were welcomed at a small registration desk; due to the fog (it's ~5,000 feet up, on the edge of where rainforest turns to cloud forest), we couldn't see out of the windows. Since our room wasn't ready, we opted for a 2.5-hour guided tour of the grounds; let me tell you, it's worth the $50 or so, and then some. Our patient, friendly guide Michael took us all around the area, from the 10-15 rooms to the private pool for guests, from the trout pond to the large public pool to the 5 waterfalls situated on the grounds. We also saw the private nature reserve (read: zoo), which introduced us to much of the fauna that is found in Costa Rica: birds of all kinds (toucans, hummingbirds, macaws, ducks), snakes (including poisonous ones), butterflies and moths, jungle cats (jaguar, margay, and more), and monkeys. I love monkeys. Also sloths.

Once we got to our room, we were greeted by the most amazing, romantic, luxurious location either of us have ever been. The fireplace on a switch; the private balcony with jacuzzi tub and hammock; the four-post bed; the bathroom the size of (if not bigger than) the entire bedroom - all of these combined to give us a sense of luxury that we'd never experienced, which was a welcome feeling on the first "real" night of our honeymoon. In the bathroom: another jacuzzi tub; two showers, including a "waterfall" shower; and a waterfall operated by a switch. Simply amazing.

The food was good - not spectacular, but plenty good enough given all the other amenities. We'd highly recommend taking an hour to walk some of the trails - you're not likely to see another person in that hour, which makes it feel as though you're walking through unspoiled rainforest.

Room Tip: The higher the better - otherwise people can see into your balcony.

I absolutely ADORED this place. Am fortunate enough to be able to stay at many amazing places and still found this place incredibly memorable. While have had larger and more standardly luxurious rooms, have never stayed at one as charming and romantic as this one, from the net-swathed four poster bed, rocking sofa and window seat, to fireplace (which,as this resort is in cloud forest, is not unnecessary). The details of the room were awesome, with wonderful bathroom and terrific deck-spent hours in hammock watching the hummingbirds land (this property is a hummingbird sanctuary and there are many colourful varieties to study) and later in afternoon, hot tub on same deck doing the same.
Plus the property has tons to see and do, see all the other reviews. Only thing I wasn't crazy about, is the fact that the property is open (for a charge) to day trippers, who come from San Jose and completely change the nature of the place, especially on weekends-
Just LOVED this place!

We started off our 3 week honeymoon in Costa Rica with 3 nights at the Peace Lodge - and we didn't want to leave! The staff made us feel special from the moment we set foot on the property - carrying our bags down countless steps (with ease) to our room which was complete with a complimentary bottle of wine. The room was amazing!! Absolutely gorgeous..and the bathroom has a waterfall shower and rainforest theme complete with jacuzzi tub. If that's not enough, there is a jacuzzi and hammock on the balcony. The photos on the website definitely didn't disappoint! There is so much to do here...from waterfall exploring to watching butterflies come to be - it's a photographer's dream! And of course our stay was made extra special by the wonderful staff - like Jose & Melvin. Melvin went out of his way to make sure we were well cared for and gave us amazing service at the Trout Bar. He even helped us with our Spanish word of the day. We will miss him :) We would recommend the Peace Lodge to anyone coming to Costa Rica - but you might want to save the drive from the airport for the daytime if you're not accustomed to driving in CR (narrow roads, potholes..coupled with mist/fog in the dark made for an interesting drive!)

Penas Blancas to Bribri, Colorado to Pavones, I have seen some of the most unusual and unique lodges, hotels, resorts and downright crazy places that Costa has to offer.....from the huts to the Hiltons. Extensively traveling this country for over 15 years, Peace Lodge and the surrounding La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park has got to be considered on everyone's top five list! Truly, as advertised, this fabulous property will not disappoint you as one of the "Seven Natural Wonders of CR". Where else can you cast a fly line into a crystal private trout lake while ordering a cocktail in a five star resort....then have their kitchen prep your catch to your liking? Where else can you get a Keel-billed Toucan to land on your head, watch perhaps one of Costa's best private big cat collections (at feeding time), and retire to your own water fall shower, Jacuzzi and cozy fireplace? The rooms are the BEST, staff is excellent, food top notch....and by the way, don't miss the hummer feeders or a chance for a butterfly kiss in their observatory.... they claim to have 25 species and over 4,000 flying....although I didn't attempt count them. Also, don't miss the waterfall hike to Magia Blanca (White Magic)...my recommendation, early morning in the mist before the tour buses...all to yourself....bring a raincoat. Peace Lodge & La Paz maybe a bit pricey, but worth every penny.....don't miss this one....even if you only have a day or two. Check out the hike to Poas volcano while you are there.

Room Tip: They are all good....there are no bad rooms. If you don't mind a little rain, try the Green sea...

Wow, Wow, Wow. This place was amazing from the grounds, to the room, the bathroom I can't stop talking about, to the service and delicious food.
You can spend an entire day walking the grounds, seeing the animals and waterfalls and being one with nature. The trails were nicely maintained with stepping stones and the ride back to the top from the bottom of the waterfalls was a welcomed treat. One reviewer commented on it being a "cement jungle," if actual wood were used it would rot for goodness sake and that comment cannot be further from the truth.
Service, beyond amazing, friendly, informative and accomodating. We enjoyed speaking with our server at night about different topics. As we were there during the slow time, it was typically just us and another couple dining at once.
Food, OH MY, it was really good. Prices were okay. The vanilla ice creamed sourced from a local vendor was the BEST I ever had in my life. I swear I will be back for it one day!
Bathroom, Wow. Unbelievable.
Tour, we did a tour to the volcano Poas and a coffee planation. The guide was friendly and very informative. I forget his name, but he typically works in the frog exhibit.
Our only complaint is this place set the bar so high for the rest of our trip that the following two hotels could not live up to our experience at Peace Lodge.
