I went with the family for a "coffee plantation tour" which was arranged by the concierge at the Marriott in San Jose. I wasn't expecting anything more than a ho-hum routine visit to a coffee plantation. Surprise! The place is more for roasting and packaging coffee beans procured from plantations across Costa Rica. What held our interest was the way the staff made it a hugely entertaining tour which included slap stick comedy jokes and a small play put together in the AV auditorium on the premises. The one hour tour included a cleverly witty history on how coffee came to Costa Rica in the 18th century and how the business grew over the past few decades. The cheesy jokes and the little plantation (more for show than any serious production) was ingeniously packaged to explain how coffee is made and the little intricacies of every day drinking for the coffee gourmet. All in all a very pleasant experience.
