“The absolute highlight of our Costa Rican vacation”
Reviewed January 24, 2010

The Toucan Rescue Ranch, a 20-minute drive out of San Jose, is a dreamy gem that is worth far more than the nominal fee that it costs to stay in their guest house. Leslie, an American-born animal lover, and her husband Jorge take care of 90-something birds, 3 sloths, dogs and other animals. They have their own banana and coffee plantations on the property and a farm that is about one hour away.

When you stay there, you don't get a plastic tour package. You get to share in their life at the animal rescue and spend all the time you want learning, being with the animals, helping out, or doing whatever you want. When my girlfriend and I stayed there, we felt like part of the family. It was a truly personal experience.

It was near the end of our vacation, and we'd paid for several tours in which we'd stared through binoculars for hours, hiked for days, and squinted and strained to see a sloth or a toucan looking like a tiny dot on a faraway tree. When we came to the Toucan Rescue Ranch, we could interact with these animals up close and personal. You just can't do this stuff anywhere else. The experience was amazing... we learned so much and we had a wonderful, relaxing time.

The guest room was comfortable and clean and very nice breakfast was included. If you're coming to Costa Rica and you're keen on seeing the animals and learning about them, you can't afford to miss this place. And NO ONE'S HEARD OF IT! It's crazy! This was our favorite place on the whole vacation!

My wife & I stayed at the Toucan Rescue Ranch for two nights while we were traveling through Costa Rica. This B&B provides the opportunity to stay in a beautiful guesthouse in a quiet peaceful area with a gorgeous view down on San Jose / Alejuala.

Their website is www.toucanrescueranch.com

The B&B is owned & managed by Leslie, an American who has lived in Costa Rica for many years, and her husband, Jorge, a native born Costa Rican. They are a fully certified exotic animal "rescue" ranch. They take in injured toucans, parrots, sloths & other exotic birds. They work with Costa Rican "Fish & Game" and local veteranarians to bring the injured animals back to health. Leslie & Jorge took us all through their property telling us about the animals and giving us a very up close view of gorgeous toucans, parrots. My wife was able to hold "Georgie", a baby sloth that they are raising. Leslie also took us on a night walk through their banana and coffee tree farm. We saw lots of colorful critters, including beautiful translucent green frogs, that are not seen during the day.

We loved sitting out on the verandah in front of the main house, talking with Leslie & Jorge, sipping delicious coffee and watching not only the birds being rehabilitated but also the many colorful birds that come to pay a visit. Leslie also makes an excellent breakfast (included) for her guests. San Isidro, the nearby village, has an absolutely gorgeous church built in the late 1800's- don't miss it!

This is an outstanding option if you are staying near San Jose and want to be away from the traffic, noise and crime of the city.
