We were surprised to find this French-owned hotel with great beach access right as we arrived in Playa Tamarindo. The French bakery next door had a wonderful assortment of French-inspired local pastries and breads which made us feel right at home on the beach. The room was clean and comfortable. Mickael was a joy and had wonderful recommendations for restaurants and surfing.

Room Tip: Scout your room for mosquitoes as they can easily get in through door if you leave them open for too...

I spent at week at Laguna del Cocodrillo while taking surf lessons at Witch's Rock Surf Camp and loved it. Michael and his family that run the hotel are great and really take care of you. The French bakery/restaurant was great to have nearby and Michael kept the bar open for guests and was always welcoming.

I'm giving this place 5 stars, but of course, it's not a luxury property and doesn't try to be. The rooms are very clean, but basic and there aren't a lot of amenities, but for what it's trying to be, I don't think you can beat it in Tamarindo. I saw some of the rooms at Witch's Rock Surf Camp, and the Cocodrillo is much much better -- the rooms are bigger, the bathrooms are bigger, you get television, and it's a little quieter too (although it's a couple hundred yards down the street and a little further from town, so not as convenient).

This place is highly recommended and I'm looking forward to staying there again.

We stayed for 7 days and it was the perfect location - a short stroll from your room to the beach and 100m along the road to the centre of town. The rooms are very basic - pillows with squares of foam, holes in sheets and a rather dark bathroom which didn't get much airflow.
Lovely little veranda to sit on in the evenings and surrounded by a beautiful little garden.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
No breakfast included and I'd recommend you do not eat at the boulangerie which uses the gardens... not very good value for money. There are some lovely places in the town where you can receive excellent food for better value.
Overall - a great little place which could do with a bit of refurbishment.

Room Tip: The ones on the ground floor had a lovely veranda... Apparently there is a fridge available if you a...

My 16 year old daughter and I ended up at the Cocodrilo by accident, as overflow from our usual hotel in Tamarindo. Cedric, Sandy and Mickael were all so welcoming and helpful, it felt more like visiting old friends, and we were sad to leave when our planned hotel opened up. We found the rooms and grounds clean, and very well kept. Everything was in good working order, and I have no doubt that if there was a need, it would have been met. Just ask! The location is right by the main surf break, so perfect if that is your thing. Being on the edge of town kept it convinient but also away from the late night bar scene. This is Costa Rica, so please don't expect a Miami Beach experience, then all will be well. Everything has its style/value.
The gate to the street is locked at late night and there is a night guard for added security, so we felt fine even though the room locks seemed a bit weak and the shelf on which the roomsafe was bolted was weak at best. I'm sure Cedric would safekeep anything you wanted if you felt the need. We didn't. Claudine and the bakery were first rate. Again, please don't expect a "Cinabon", or McMuffin; but if you appreciate a buttery Croissant or fresh Pain au Chocolat you will be oh so happy. We will be back!

Our group of 15 spent 2 weeks travelling in Costa Rica. After staying in 4 different hotels, ranging from $10 a night pp to $105 for a room we were prepared for anything, but kept our expectations low. I must say, we were pleasantly surprised and Laguna del Cocodrilo exceeded all of our expectations for the price. The rooms were clean and spacious, A/C worked great, beds were big and comfortable, and the staff was pleasant and helpful. Our group occupied 6 different rooms. Rooms 1, 2, and 3 are on the ground floor and have a nice little covered patio with chairs. The curtains are somewhat thin, so I would recommend room 1 since it is at the end and nobody will be passing by. Room 6 had 2 king beds and they put another mattress in to accommodate our 5 boys. Rooms 6, 7, & 8 are all ocean view upstairs. Room 10 was across the hall on the 2nd floor and overlooked the street. This hotel is located a short walk from downtown. It is one of the last hotels on the main drag and on the beach. We did find the food to be very pricey compared to other options. We did have some pastries in the French bakery, but found them a bit lacking. To be fair, we did have them later in the day and it was the slow season, so maybe they would have been better fresh.

I cannot adequately express to you how impressed we both were with the willingness of the personnel at the hotel to accommodate and provide for our needs. The service was unparalleled. I would highly recommend your services to anyone considering a trip to your remarkable country. I loved the beachfront location. I could have stayed here several days. The staff was above all expectations. These included: Stacy, Michael, and Cedric at the desk, Clarine at the French bakery, and D.J. at the restaurant. Our estuary tour with Nelson, which was booked by Stacy, was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you very much.

The facilities could use refurbishment; it's time to update. (The room was barely adequate and could have used some cleaning and updating. For example: moldy bathroom, no towel holders, limited hot water, broken faucet, intermittent internet service, etc.)

We booked the junior suite which was the most expensive room and on the top floor. It was large room and clean and the balcony had good views of the beach, but it was pretty tired and the bed was quite sunken and the lock on the door not great. In the mornings for breakfast, we could never work out whether we were supposed to wait for service or go and order ourself from the bakery. I think only once did someone come to the table to take an order and that was because they had obviously just brought food to another table.
The food in the French bakery is lovely and we ate in the restaurant once which was also good. I get the impression the business is more based around the restaurant and bakery and the rooms are just a sideline, so it was fine for a couple of nights and probably good for backpackers as the rooms are reasonable.
NB, we had thought the fact the hotel was next to a pool of crocodiles was a good chance of seeing a bit of wildlife but the pool dried up a couple of years ago, so no crocs. Don't expect that would bother most people though
