Leaving today from paradise and going back home. This hotel is located in the perfect location to explore Tamarindo Beach in Costa Rica. The beach may not have perfect white sand but it is amazing. It goes on for miles and at some points becomes a black beach due to the volacanos located in Costa Rica.

The hotel is built in 1994 by Swiss family. Spend the extra and get a bungalow on the beach like room 4. You should also try to get room 7 which is very close to the beach and quite room. Do not get a room in the front of the hotel because it is located off a street and you will wake up early due to traffic. But in all honesty you still wake up early because the sunlight or monkeys wake you up. What is important is to stay here and just walk and relax on the beach.

The staff is great and accomidating. When my wife and I had problem with the original room they gave us a new one. The breakfeast which is included is great. However, pass on lunch and dinner and just take a 10 minute walk to town via the beach. One day you must and I say must eat at the Langusta Beach Club which is a five minute walk from the hotel on the beach. It is run by a frech couple and the food is amazing.

The only things to do here is to get a tour and see the giant green turtles. That tour runs from 530pm to 930pm. Also get surf lessons this is the place to learn because the waves are small.

But most importantly, bring down some books and read and watch the waves go by you and see the beautiful sunsets. Also, there are no televisions located in the hotel because the swiss owner wants you just to relax.

Room Tip: Go for the bungalow near the ocean.

Stop number one of our first ever Costa Rican vacation was at Captain Suizo in Tamarindo. We were pleasantly surprised at how assessable Tamardino was from the Liberia airport and were forewarned by other reviewers on TripAdvisor (and therefore unfazed) about the bumpy, dusty road leading to the hotel. Quick check-in and onto our AC room. I think we would have preferred having a second floor balcony view, privacy, and screens, but it was nice to be able to walk back from the beach/pool and directly into our room without going around the back. And the AC was appreciated at times as well.
The property is well-kept and in mid-December we had no problem getting pool or beach chairs when we wanted them. Breakfast was included in our stay and the quality and quantity of food was exceptional. Drinks and meals were pricier than many other places in town, but again, quality was good and the convenience was appreciated the couple times we did indulge.
The location was perfect for us. It was great to be on the beach, but private enough that we felt we could leave our belongings without worry. We enjoyed walking the beach during the day as well as walking the beach to town for happy hour and dinner at night. We were cautious at first about walking alone at night, but everything felt very safe and we had no issues.
Wifi is only available in the hotel lobby and even there, it was spotty and slow.
Overall, we were pleased with Captain Suizo and would definitely recommend it.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights at the tail end of our trip to Costa Rica. The hotel is nice, in a secluded section of the beach, but by a dirt road which can get noisy at times. Our room was very nice, spacious, functional. We did run into a plumbing issue which was resolved quickly and efficiently by the staff.

The hotel is not within the village of Playa Tamarindo. Be ready to walk; it is not far. I recommend walking on the beach as there are no sidewalks on the dirt road. There are good restaurants in the village, and the usual tourist shops.

There is no gym on the premises. They do advertise on their website that there is gym equipment, but what they have is antiquated. Howler monkeys seem to stay around the hotel, and throw poop at guests. We did not get targeted, but we did have to watch where we were walking. The staff diligently cleans up, but be warned.

We used the services of the concierge to book activities. The services were efficient.

All in all it was an enjoyable stay, though overpriced.

Our family stayed here last week of Dec. 2012. This boutique hotel is its own unique paradise with an emphasis on beautiful grounds, nature, simple but comfortable and modern rooms (our room had excellent water pressure, good air conditioning with ceiling fans, electronic safe, king pillow top bed was ultra comfortable). I loved that there were no tvs, and internet access is limited to lobby; so that you can focus on all the beauty of the location, the surroundings and the activities rather than on your phone or computer. The hotel is on the south end of Tamarindo, and directly on the beach (not too many hotels are). You can enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean while in a hammock, or beach chairs that have very comfortable cushions with lots of trees for shade (vs renting really uncomfortable chairs if you are not staying at a beach front hotel). Close by to the south are rocks to explore at low tide filled with tidal life. At the hotel, there are resident cats, raccoons and porcupines on site, lots of beautiful birds come to visit (magpie jays, and canaries). One afternoon, we also saw a group of 15 howler monkeys (including babies) hanging out in the trees right in front of our room. Got right under them for some great photos. The concierge desk can plan excursions, and has reading materials for use, games, table tennis, pool table, boogie boards (free), surf boards for hire ($6/hr), kayaks (not sure if free or for rent). Breakfast included was very good, lots of choices, loved the fresh yummy fruit and the big assortment freshly baked breads. The staff was friendly and helpful. We treated ourselves to massages which were fabulous (and I thought reasonably priced compared to northeast US prices). The walk to town is maybe 10 minutes, and can be surprising if you are not accustomed to it (ie the roads are dirt, but covered with a molasses mixture that has a peculiar scent to it), or you can cab it for $5. During the day you can walk to town on the beach.
Suggestion: Boogie Boards: There was a tendancy for some people to take boogie boards for the whole day, keeping them at their chairs. Seems like most only use them for an hour or so but still hold on to them. It would be helpful if the hotel informed guests to return them when not in use.
Suggestion: Beach chairs: Although there were plenty, we went probably at the busiest week of the year. Again, some people would drop a personal item (like a bottle of suntan lotion) on a chair, and then not use it all day. A little courtesy is suggested, and perhaps the hotel could suggest that and make it clear to the guests.

In all - we hope to return some day. Thank you for a great vacation.

Room Tip: We had a large room near the spa. It had its own patio, outdoor furniture and privacy. A real treat.

Hotel staff and "Memorable Costa Rica" arranged for me to fly back to San Jose for a passport renewal. Everyone was very concerned and extremely helpful.
Wonderful quiet beachfront location, great if you like an early morning run along the beach. Rooms had nice loungers on patio to enjoy the tropical gardens.
