Pretty, but lots of locals that are kind of sketchy. Watch your stuff. The surf is awesome and its a nice walk on the beach up to Playa Grande.

Big beach area that wasn't crowded. A lot of services close by to get something to eat or drink. Clean, great people watching kind of beach!

Although some parts are busy its mostly by surfers in the sea so the actual beach itself is pretty empty. Furthest south is perfect to watch the sunset with the pelicans flying across the setting sun.

Sure you may find a few more folks on the beaches in Tamarindo than other places around but there is a good reason for that. Tamarindo is super unique in the fact there are countless great eats, neat bars and shops that appropriate for all ages and families. If you want deserted beaches and 30 minute drives to even the smallest of stores and restaurants then you are better off heading south to Avellanes, Negra, or north to Grande.
