“Relaxing and cute little B&B”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

The Mahayana is a very nice and well-maintained B&B. It is located a bit away from the main street and action of Tamarindo (which is what I wanted) - but it's a 3mins walk to restaurants and a 5mins walk to the beach only.

The rooms are clean, with a very comfortable bed, decent-sized in-room bathroom, AC and a fan as well as a cupboard. All rooms of the main sector of the hotel face towards a communal area with palm trees where there's also a kitchen, a small jacuzzi (no pool) and several sunloungers. All rooms also have a small patio with table and chairs. There's also a separate room where you can store your surfboards, if you're in town for surfing.

The hotel is small (7 rooms) and on the quiet side - if you're more into a party place, you may feel more comfortable in the bigger hostels around the main street of Tamarindo.

The owner, Cecile is very nice, friendly and always around if you need her. She's helpful and will always give advice or recommendations about anything you may look for or need.

Unfortunately while we were there, the hotel got broken into along with two other hotels nearby. While no one was harmed, quite a few things were stolen. Break-ins and thefts do happen every now and then in Costa Rica, so do not take this as a negative reflection on the hotel or the safety of it - but take Cecile's advise to always lock all doors, windows and gates seriously.

I stayed at the place for almost two weeks and would stay here again.

Definitely can't say any rave reviews about this place. The owner is a very sweet woman and she has chosen a decent location for her hotel. Its a quick walk to the beach and main area of Tamarindo but not close enough to be caught up in the noisy and nightlife of the city. We were thankful for the televisions in the rooms since I got sick during our trip, but I can't speak to much else about the comforts of the hotel. For Tamarindo, it isn't too pricy, but based on other hotels around Costa Rica this one didn't offer the same value for your dollar. It was clean and well kept, but we felt we lacked quite a bit of privacy (all the rooms have glass sliding doors that face to the inside of the compound, only blocked by a short fabric curtain). We could definitely hear if anyone was outside. The towels were a bit old and we had some problems with the bathroom plumbing while we were there (not our fault). Not that big of a deal, things happen. Could have offered a better breakfast (there is a $6 optional breakfast which only includes coffee, toast, some eggs, but nothing too exciting for price). Overall the place, given the location, has a lot of potential, but its lacking the Costa Rican charm and welcome-ness that we experienced at other hotels in the country.

Hotel Mahayana was a perfect place for my stay in Tamarindo. My friend had a room next to mine. We enjoyed the common area outside our rooms, where we sat at tables, and in the mornings had our tea or coffee and plotted our adventures for the day. Then in the evenings we talked about what we had done and seen over cocktails. Cecile, the hotel's owner was most gracious and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and hassle free. Very clean and within a short walk to everything.

This was the perfect little hotel for our trip to Tamarindo! Super inexpensive, clean, had just what we needed and was SO close to everything! Cecile the owner is lovely! Very friendly and helpful. She has a whole list of fun things to do, scheduled our excursions and set me up with an awesome surf lesson (Seafari Costa Rica- Alejandro was INCREDIBLE)! Cecile cooks up a great $5 breakfast when you want it or can recommend some local cuisine! There's only about 6 or 8 rooms at the hotel, it's very quaint and private. Each room has a little breakfast nook outside their door, chaise lounges & hammocks! The tiki bar is BYOB, has a small kitchen, and is the little hangout if you want to meet other travelers! We had the best time here and can't wait to come back! Hotel Mahayana and Cecile were absolutely AMAZING!!

Our family arrived early into Tamarindo and spent one night at hotel mahayana... What a fantastic place! The hotel was clean and the staff (Cecilia :) ) were great! They went above and beyond to make our stay awesome. They found an old Boogie Board and some beach toys for my boys. Showed us the secret shortcut to the beach and even let the boys play with their new kitten. Really great hard working people. Also Cecilia speaks fluent english, spanish and... french! This was great as it gave or boys, who are in french immersion, a chance to think in French.
If we had not booked a condo for our stay here in Tamarindo we would have stayed at hotel mahayan.
One last thing -We really liked the location. It is located about two blocks from the beach which means that everything is a little quieter and slower. The hotel is surrounded by forest with Howler monkeys, lizards and other wildlife
