The view from Matapalo was breathtaking. The beach, the El Diria lagoon pool, restaurants and shops (including grocery) were all within close walking distance. Tamarindo is a funky, crazy little town but once you learn the ropes, it has so much charm. It's a great place to surf especially for beginners. The food was amazing in the smaller restaurants (off the main road). While the town is completely disorganized (there seemed to be a complete lack of rules and regulations, i.e. traffic, prices, shop hours, shirts and shoes in restaurants), everything was clean as can be. Based on the lay of the land, as well as the fact that we traveled with 4 teenagers, we could not have made a better choice in Costa Rica than Tamarindo and we could not have chosen a better place to stay than Matapalo. Now for the negatives with #603: the beds were uncomfortable and the sheets, pillows and towels were atrocious. Nubby sheets, lumpy pillows and worn bleach stained towels are so wrong for such a luxury apartment. The kitchen could have been better equipped. There was next to no flatware. Both the w/d and dishwasher did not clean very well. #603 was billed as sleeping 8 but the upstairs is a studio so basically 4 shared one room. If you are one couple with 5 or 6 kids it works well. Two couples with 4 kids does not work as well. This could be fixed by replacing twin beds with a (comfortable) queen or king in the 2nd downstairs room. For such a luxurious apartment it's really a shame not to have the little amenities that you do not want to have to shop for such as a bar of soap or laundry detergent. One other small suggestion. There should be a sun and rock warning in the information sheet. There is a lot about theft, which is not an issue at Matapalo, but tourists should be aware of some of the other Costa Rica dangers. You must wear shirts to surf and total sun block. The burn is bad. No one tells you about the rocks that you cannot see when the tide changes. You must ask a surf instructor on the beach before venturing out. The other tourist beware issue is pricing. Find out first what something should cost and bargain from there. Establish a price before getting in a taxi or booking a tour and compare. A little homework goes a long way. Also check the price of the condo as it seems to fluctuate. It was listed for less online after booking. All and all, no regrets. We look froward to staying in Matapalo again if better sheets and towels and a few more spoons were provided. RPM management was responsive and great to work with.
