Just back from a 2 week stay with 5 friends in Costa Rica and last week spent in Cala Luna. Cannot say one negative thing about the stay. The food (especially brekkie) was just great and the service to go along with it was 100%. Pool is fab and spa treatments were amazing! really special place.

Just completed an 8-day stay at Cala Luna. It has been an awesome time for us and our three young kids. We are really glad that we picked this resort over a few others that we checked at tripadvisor.

The resort and its villas are definitely first rate. The friendly staff is totally amazing. A shout-out to the front desk (Carlos, Laura et al), the restaurant (Esteban, Enrique, Marlon et al), the driver (Hugo), the surfing instructor (Victor) and the many others who smiled and made our stay so much enjoyable - sorry we didn't get all your names.

We did quite a few half-day tours and the kids especially loved the pools (both the main pool and the private one in our villa).

The facility is well maintained. The pools are crystal clear, much better than those in my gym. Although when we first checked in, we found out there was no hot water - a kid came immediately and fixed the furnace's pilot light.

It's Costa Rica, so there are many bugs and little critters all over the place. Every morning we could see leaf-cutter ants carry their building materials on our patio. Ants also ran about in the room but we stopped bothering with them after two days. There were lots of mosquitos everywhere we went in Tamarindo and Guanacaste, including Cala Luna. We brought ample supply of bug repellants and it turned out the resort seemed to have plenty stock of "Off!" aerosols on the premises.

In addition to tropical birds, holler monkeys, lizards and crabs we saw everyday in the resort, our kids thoroughly enjoyed the company of the resort dogs Igor and Maya.

We are no foodies, so to us the food at the restaurant was well made. The breakfast was included in our rate. Food is generally expensive here in Tamarindo for tourists. With three smallish kids, we decided not to sample many local spots but relied on recommendations from people we met here. From my experience, I would say even compared to a place that serves Costa Rican food in la Rotunda area at Tamarindo, for a family of 5, we would probably not have over-paid by a lot if we had our lunches/dinners here the resort restaurant. Rather here it was easy, clean and relaxed, and the food was good. So eating on site was still worth it. We did wish for some soup on Cala Luna menu though.

The rocky beach is near the hotel with a 1 minute walk. The stretch of Tamarindo sandy beach is about half to one mile away. It's walkable but with our kids, we asked for cabs to go to tamarindo. If I was with myself, for instance I would just jog to a surf shop and rent a board.

We liked most of our excursions. We did as many as our kids can handle (aged from 8 to 2). I never checked for prices of trips that can be booked from outside of the resort, although I assumed they could be cheaper outside.

If there's one complaint, the lighting is too dim in our villa. I would ask the resort to install something brighter. Make them dimmable if guests prefer different ambience, which would still suit its simple but elegant room decor.

Pura vida!

We planned a last minute trip to Tamarindo in August and chose the Cala Luna based on reviews on this site. When we arrived we were greeted with a cool beverage by the warm, friendly and helpful front desk clerk, Guillermo (William). Shortly after, the howler monkeys shouted their greetings as well. A mother and baby monkey were in the trees near the pool one day, one of the dogs came to sit near us at dinner one night (though she did not beg for food) and the birds were colorful and plentiful.
While we did not stay in the villas, there was sufficient privacy in our room. The room was a decent size and the bathroom set up was very nice and spacious. The room could use more seating, counter top and storage space. It as great that there was a small refrigerator, but there weren't chairs to watch tv or a dresser to store clothes (but there were shelves in the closet).
The staff at Cala Luna was very attentive, friendly and helpful. They really went out of their way to meet our needs. For example, we told Cristian we were going fishing early one morning and he arranged for our breakfast to be ready to go.
We had a great time there!

The hotel itself was nice. Just be careful NOT to leave anything in your room of value. We left a $1000 pair of earrings in the room. They said they "looked for them" and were sorry. I asked that they further check housekeeping etc. We were totally ignored and VERY unhappy about the honor and integrity of the hotel.

This was our first trip to Costa Rica! Spent seven heavenly days there! Thanks to Matt our trip coordinator ! There were eleven of us in our group and everyone from front desk, maintenance, Transporter, pool, security to landscaping crew; Thank you! Enrique and Marlin were very very attentive to our needs. Sasha is one of a kind! Always a smile and taught us all how to surf. Everyone always greeted us with a smile & pleasant. all of them went over and beyond the call of duty.
We did two days of fishing and the chef there prepared an exquisite meal with our catch of the day not once but twice. We are avid fish eaters and I have never experience a meal like this!!!
We had two Villas that were tucked away from everything. Loved the howling Monkey and the sounds of birds in the morning. The walk to the beach , tide pooling, lounging on the beach ! Happy hour at the beach every night with a tropical drink to view the sunset was majestic!
Oh ! I don't know what else to say other than it was wonderful!!! Definitely going back!!
Captain Miikel of the Salsa and Captain Jose of the Outcast made our fishing excursions exciting and rewarding!!!

Room Tip: definitely a villa!! Even if you don't use the ktchen it was great having our private pool to sw...

Amazing staff - friendly, knowledgeable, attentive. We loved staying here! Carlos, our favorite staff member, turned us on to "Tico to go," a delivery service for the local restaurants - after early morning treks to ziplining or ATV touring, we were able to kick back for a few hours in our villa, enjoy our private pool, and lunch on great food. The sunset cocktails on the beach were a great touch, as were the beautiful "animals" created from hand towels and flowers, left on our beds each day.

Room Tip: Villa 6 had great wifi connection; our first villa (#5) did not.

There are many other hotels around Tamarindo, however is not easy to find a place that has high end standards regarding cleaning and service, this place has it. The villas are very well decorated, big rooms, great bathrooms, full equipped kitchen, nice terraza to chill out, and a private pool. You could notice they pay attention to details as the type of pillows, bed sheets, mattress, bath amenities, towels, etc.
Food was surprisingly good and reasonable priced, room service available which was great for a sunday with a little hang over, just order a delicious burger, a little swim and you will be ready for more, of the many out door activities and rides their concierge offers.
I work on the same industry, so have a good judgment on this, definitely this hotel; Highly Recommended!! Pura Vida!!
