Description: This setting could just as well be in LA or Paris; beautiful teak terracing, all handmade wood furnishing and the shining cobber from the bar and the lamps give that warmth and good feeling we all enjoy. The wait staff takes pride in being members of Team Coconut for years. It is their personalized attention that permits them to remember each client and their likings. Nowhere else will you feel as Welcome and Well attended as here. Every day the same words are repeated "The Client is the King". At El Coconut you will also find a truly professional kitchen where the main ingredients are "Heart & Soul". Who could be able to resist an Avocado filled with sauteed Shrimps, A Tropical Lobster prepared with fresh pineapple, raisins and ginger or not to forget the Surf & Turf even big enough to satisfy the hungriest surfer. Where else in Costa Rica would you find a temperate wine cellar of almost 1000 bottles? Nowhere that we know of. Our wine selection goes from the easy drinking Latin American table wines to finer selections such as Chateau Neuf du Pape, Penfold 389 and many more. Our seating capacity is more than 100. We are used to and truly enjoy arranging your special events; be that "The President's Club", incentive dinners, rehearsal dinners or weddings. Let us make your night that special night.

We enjoyed our dinner a great deal although the server had a very hard time communicating with us and we her.
The Miss Piggy salad is badly named but tastes terrific!
There is one waiter who seems to run interference for staff and diners taking payments and answering questions that the other servers may not understand. (I wish my Spanish was better!) The set menu is a good value and while we considered dessert, by the time we left we satiated.
This place is obviously run by someone who has traveled throughout Europe and is striving toward a high standard. Bathrooms are very clean and well appointed. I got the impression that the owner expects a great deal from her staff and they deliver.

We loved this place. We enjoyed the Shrimp stuffed Avocado appetizer. The dinner was cooked well with nice portions. The banana flambe was fun and delicious, using the local sugarcane alcohol for the fuel. What made our meal perfect was the fantastic service we got. Our waiter was personable, attentive and friendly. He explained all the options and led us down a perfect path. When we sat down, there was a lively table next to us and we got to hear Robert August tell his company AARP Surfing Stories. His Surf shop is across the street and is fun to check out before dinner. Overall, it was the best meal that we had in the Tamarindo area.

We wen´t there with friends and we decided to order the $25 menu. We should have looked closer, but even though it has entrance, main and dessert you have to choose between entrance and dessert ( it was a very little note on top of the menu). The waitress didn´t tell us and so we ordered desserts even though we were full - thinking it was included- and it was $7 each ! ( very poor desserts too). Also we order a glass of water each and even though they never open any bottle in front of us they charged us $12 on water!
We ended up paying $50 per person!!!!! Not worth it at all.

It has been a long time since I have felt the need to clarify on the reviews left on El Coconut in Tamarindo, but this time I will be doing it point by point:

* For the Prefixe menu you say "it was a very little note on top of the menu" informing you that the prefixe is a 2 not a 3 course dinner....
Reality is that the title is in size 18 and the text in size 12... Should I make it even bigger?

"..... very poor desserts too"
Sorry that you were not happy with my desserts. Usually the clients truely do enjoy them. Could it simply be that you were all quite full after having both appetizers and main courses each? This is the reason why the menu is 2 course and not 3 course. Usually the 3 courses is just too much food for anyone.

"Also we order a glass of water each and even though they never open any bottle in front of us they charged us $12 on water!"
We do ask all our clients in the beginning of the meal if they would like water. Yes we serve them from Glass Bottles that are opened at the bar as other glass bottles (coke, imperial, corona etc etc) Just to clarify you had 3 bottles of water at 2.000c or $4 a piece.

"We ended up paying $50 per person!!!!! Not worth it at all."
I am sorry that you did not find your dinner worthy of the bill
(is that why you cut the wait staff short of U$ 50-,?!?!?!)
Though I would like to informe that you consumed:
4 appetizers (2 improved ceviche & 2 avocado and shrimp)
4 main courses (3 pescado marisquero with shrimps and calamaris & 1 filet mignon)
4 deserts (2 coconut delights, 1 flambade fruits and ice-cream & 1 cafe katharina)
red wine
beer
mojito
bottle water

All prices are marked clairly without and with taxes. So sorry your experience was not a positive one but I do hope that maybe reviews could be a bit more nuanced.

Sincerly,
Katharina

We really liked this restaurant which looked a bit more like a formal restaurant than many in Tamarindo. The fish was excellent and my wife who is a vegetarian found plenty to choose from. The staff were really friendly and we would have gone back again if we had more time.

Expensive meal - my wife & I each had lobster prepared differently - both overcooked, grilled was really dry. Lots of garlic, but not much lobster taste. Accompanying veggies overcooked. Lots of batter on some things with little taste. Weak, tasteless drinks too. I'd pass on el Coconut.
