My daughter (9) and I stayed for 2 weeks at Elena's Casa La Chora while attending a language school. It was an excellent choice & experience: so much so that we added on two more days..
The kitchen is well-equipped; I was able to shop at the Pali a half-street down and make affordable meals in-home (though I do recommend trying the close taco a taco for casada). There is a helpful fruit man by the bank who will recommend pieces of fruit based on they day you plan on eating...and there is a blender!
The bed is a true King bed (in Monteverde we experienced king= US full). The bedroom has A/C which allowed for very restive sleep and the TV is also in the bedroom. My daughter spent each evening winding down with Cartoon Network in Spanish. Sheets were changed weekly (which was often enough for us). It is a firm bed, which works for me There is also a closet with lots of hangers, a safe, and a rack (which I used to dry clothes or store books) under the TV.
The bathroom was clean, shower with warm water. Waste was taken out a couple times/week.
The living room area/dining counter is in the same room as the kitchen. Very spacious, clean, and windows have screens. Two ceiling fans keep the area cooler. There is not table, but a built-in counter with 4 stools. There is a table on the patio if you really need one. A wonderful hammock swings on the patio (don't go into a hammock if you have buttons on your back pocket).
The pool was nice & refreshing. Sometimes the bubbles were going, sometimes not & I'm sure if it bothered me, I could have asked Elena how to make it bubble.
The women who took care of the cleaning were fast & efficient, and were kind with my very broken Spanish.
We had very few bug incidents. It is the tropics, and we definitely had less than some of my fellow-school mates. One cockroach & some tiny black beetles. I messaged Elena about the beetles & her husband was over within an hour! so fast! I have had more cockroaches in my apartments in Texas and when visiting Florida. It is the tropics, so I wasn't surprised. There was a big (by Wisconsin standards) spider that died in the pool & settled to the bottom. He horrified my kid, but she still went in the pool & stuck to the other side. These bugs are not much to note if you realize you are in a tropical zone; however, worth noting for those winter folks so not totally surprised by nature (the whole reason you picked CR, right?).
The location is great: 4 minute walk to the beach (and Intercultura language school), minutes from the bank, Pali (grocery), restaurants close by.
In short, I'd stay here again in a heart beat. Thank you, Elena!
