Great location, great staff. Breakfast could be better (offer something more than one item like greasy pancakes. By default, provide toast butter and cereal) but otherwise we enjoyed our stay. Loved the decor, kitchen, bedroom and beach view. The pool was quite cold.

Overall - perfect location, rooms are clean and unique, I will be back !

You absolutely cannot beat the location if you are staying at Playa Sámara ... it is beachfront and right near the center of town where you can find lots of restaurants and shops nearby.

My husband and I stayed here at the end of November and we really wished we had more time here to explore the area and mostly just relax. This is perfect for relaxation. Inside, you can sit on the couches near the open window watching and listening to the waves that are so near .... it is like a dream to wake up from a nap to the sound of the waves. We could walk up and down the beach and there were little bars and restaurants tucked in the trees. It was so beautiful to see trees and discreet little hotels and restaurants as opposed to a skyline of concrete and high-rises.

The hotel was so cute and we loved the idea of it being up on stilts, with a private eating area and hammocks hanging below. We could barbecue on the grill, play games on the table, or simply lay in the hammock in the shade, or on our private lounge chairs in the sun in front of our room. The pool was fun to swim in after the sun went down, and it has a friendly personal feel since there are only a handful of rooms. The staff was very friendly and having breakfast included was an absolutely perfect start of the day. This also was very relaxing, to simply wake up and walk down to the table instead of having to think about where to go for breakfast.

There is also a little grocery store right across the street so you could plan to stay for a while and save money on food this way, since the rooms are equipped with a kitchen and bbq downstairs.

Again I have to mention how helpful the staff was. They waited up for us until the tiny hours of the morning on the night we arrived, and they also helped us arrange transportation to our next destination that there was no way we would have gotten arranged in time without them.

Thank you so much for everything, and we hope to visit again soon!!!

I struggled with how to rate Samara Tree House Inn as my few complaints were really minute. Overall we really liked the place, the few complaints I had which I'll detail below were about the TLC needed, advertised wifi and mosquito nets. The rooms were as advertised, neatly decorated and cozy. I wont go into them much because the pictures here and on their website are very accurate although I was surprised at how close together they were. I will say that when you make your reservation you should ask for tree houses 3 or 4 if you can, they have the best views but beach goers can see right in your room so if you want a little privacy with still fantastic views ask for tree houses 2 or 5 (1 and 6 are the poolside units). Over the course of our five nights we stayed in two of the four beach front tree houses, each with their own perks. The breakfast served was quite good, I don't know why other reviewers were saying it was overpriced because ours was included in the nightly rate.
As other reviewers have suggested the units could use a little TLC (e.g. the shower heads in both units we stayed in were attached to a pipe which isn't secured to the wall so in order to adjust the head you also had to hold the pipe, and in some places the seams of the drywall were visible though the paint). This really didn't detract from the place much, but considering you pay a premium to stay in the tree houses the TLC could go a long way to making customers happy paying a little higher rate a night when you can go around the corner for half the price.
My complaint about the wifi is that it was nonexistent. When we checked in they didn't mention that it wasn't working and the next morning when I asked they said it was down but was hopefully being fixed in the morning...that was the same story on day #2 and it wasn't fixed the whole time we were there. It's not that I had intended to use it a lot (it's Costa Rica after all) but I had saved a list of places and activities I wanted to do so not being able to access it was frustrating.
Mosquito nets are necessary. The large windows on the front have no screens and you'll want to have them open to get airflow and keep you cool at night. The mosquito net in the first unit we stay in was fine. In the second unit the net had holes in it...which really defeats the purpose of having it at all. We woke up several times with mosquito buzzing around us.

To be fair we really like this place and will stay here again if we return...I only say IF because there are so many other beaches in Costa Rica we would like to check out. If you're planning a trip to Samara I'd highly recommend the Tree Houses, they are very cool and the location is absolutely ideal. Also, if you're going to Samara make sure you check out SamaraTrails.com ...it was the highlight of our trip!

Room Tip: When you make your reservation you should ask for tree houses 3 or 4 if you can, they have the best...

We stayed three nights in the Samara Tree House and were totally happy. Great location and well-implemented tree house concept. Not luxurious but very comfortable. Kitchen in the tree house and a grill underneath.

We just completed an 11 night stay at the Samara Tree House Inn and have mixed feelings about our visit. Most visitors to the tree house seem to stay 2-3 nights, and perhaps shortening our stay to 6-7 nights would have been better. Here are our thoughts based on a rather length stay:

PROS:
*LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!!! This inn is located smack in the middle of Playa Samara with a wide variety of restaurants/bars in both directions and a well-stocked grocery directly across the street. Little need for a car unless you plan to venture outside of the town.

*View from the second-floor treehouse is nothing short of amazing. The living area has a giant window facing the water and you continually see and hear the crashing waves.

*The design and lay-out of the property is efficient and striking. Beach walkers always stop and stare. Most impressive is the shaded patio area directly under each of the 4 treehouses (the other 2 poolside rooms do not have this patio area)--we spent most of our time here--eating at the comfortable table and 4 chairs, lounging in the hammocks, and reading in the not-so comfortable plastic lounges. This area is equipped with a charcoal grill and outside sink/running water. There is also a small pool that is adequate for the 6 units.

*The working staff (housekeepers, breakfast servers, landscapers, etc.) were extremely friendly and tried very hard to please.

CONS;
*This property has such potential, but sadly needs some work. On our first morning we realized our toilet was leaking (puddle on bathroom floor). We immediately reported it to management and they promptly "fixed" the problem. Unfortunately we encountered the same problem the next day and mentioned it again. Management again attempted to repair it without success and resorted to placing towels around the toilet to prevent puddles for the remainder of our stay (9 days). Hot water--adequate and available in the shower only. Not having hot water in the bathroom sink was one thing, but not having hot water in the kitchen sink made us very uneasy when it came to washing dishes and utensils! Overall, furnishings are a bit tired and could use some replacing.

*Management seemed somewhat indifferent. Upon check-in we were not provided much information about the property. Our unit was pointed out to us from the reception desk and we were told what time to expect breakfast, and that was pretty much it! This lack of information provided some entertainment for us over the next 11 days as we watched confused visitors attempting to take and use chairs that belonged to another unit, much to the surprise of the renters of that unit. One couple sat on their patio in complete darkness one evending until we showed them where the light switch was. This went on pretty much every day when new guests would arrive and was totally preventable if management had given this information. Our unit contained a binder listing tours and prices, advising us to contact the manager if we wished to book one. After a few days of settling in, we decided to book a tour and went to the front desk. We referenced the tour we had chosen and the manager said she would get back to us. The next morning she told us the tour was available and quoted us a price almost double the price listed in their binder. When we showed her the binder and listed price ("$50 per person") she said she would recheck. A few minutes later she got back to us and said that company doesn't do the tours anymore and this captain needed more people to do it for that price.! In frustration we gave up and made arrangements elsewhere. Clearly, the management should be responsible for leaving accurate and current brochures/binders in the units. Overall, we never got the impression that management really cared about its guests, and since there are only 6 units, this is a shame.

BOTTOM LINE; We truly fell in love with Playa Samara and will return, but probably not to the Samara Tree House Inn. We did some exploring in the area and found some other properties that offer similar amenities at competitive prices. We hope the new owner (since March 2012)/management appreciates our constructive criticism and makes some small changes to enhance this lovely property.

Dear Mary and Kris,
Thank you so much for your review and for the constructive feedback. We truly appreciate your input and are working actively to address all of the issues you mentioned. We have spoken with our on-site manager about the toilet, the accuracy of the brochures and the necessity of giving guests a more thorough introduction and tour of their rooms. We hope that you will return to Samara and that you will give us the opportunity to make your next stay a 5 star visit!
Warm regards,
Heidi

We spent 4 nights in a tree house with a wonderful view over the beach and sea. The location is perfect and the staff very helpful. For the price charged however, the breakfast should have been more elaborate than just eggs & toast. In addition thereto, the pillows were lumpy and musquito net too small & it had a hole in it. With a few improvements this might be perfect.

The pool side room was easier to access with no steps, had a good wi-fi signal and air conditioning. The tree house rooms had fantastic views, stairs to get to them, no wi-fi, and no A/C. The pool side room was also a little cheaper, but no real view from the room until you walk out the door, then the pretty pool area with the ocean about a hundred yards in the background. The pool side room was the right choice for us but I understand that some would like the tree top rooms with that fantastic view. The service was very friendly. Breakfast was huge with a big fruit plate first, then eggs made to order with gallo pinto etc. after that. Our pool side room was clean with no insects. Pura Vida!
