Charming bungalows, tastefully decorated, in a botanical garden setting. Loved the lanai with a hammock and ceiling fan. Outdoor shower is a wonderful concept, but challenging experience with all the bees! Enjoyed visiting the "secret beach" and my husband had an epic fishing day at Playa Buena Vista just down the road. Breakfast was delicious, highly recommend! Would not consider this place walking distance to town or Playa Samara, but an easy 5 minute drive.

The hotel is nice if you want to stay there, but not much too see around, and too far to walk to town, so you need a car and then parking at the beach and rent long chairs.. Beach close to hotel or samara are ok but not wow. Surf is 30min dirt road, so not convenient for surf base and neither to visit natural park, volcan, etc. Good spot to rest for 2 days. But prices hotel and restaurants in samara are too expensive and not much tipical food. Hotel is nice but would not recommend the location.

When I'm on vacation, my hotel room is the place I spend the least amount of time. Not so at the Gecko. Even though Samara was fun, and the area beaches are some of the best, it was so relaxing to read from the hammock on the private porch and listen to the monos roaming the treetops, or watch the hummingbirds sippling the nectar of nearby flowers. The cabin was perfect sized, the kitchen was adequately equipped and we loved the outdoor shower. If I was going to run a facility, this is exactly the way I would do it. Great staff. The only complaint would be neighbors with screaming children. Fortunately, the cabins turn over and bad neighbors aren't permanent.

Based on our 11-day experience (Feb. 27 - Mar. 10, 2013), the best we can come up with to describe Gecko Verde is that it is a slice of Eden. Nathalie and Pierre, together with their warm and friendly staff (most especially Dana and Lety), have created a unique and wonderous garden, filled not only with hundreds of varieties of plants and flowers, but more colorful butterflies than can be counted, daily visits from a couple of coatimundi and squirrels that appear as if Disney created their colorful coats, and frequent appearances by the incredible Howler monkies. I found myself waking early to the calling of the Howlers and then sit on the outside porch drinking coffee and listenig to the orchestrated songs of so many different birds who welcome the sunrise each day. Everything about the bungalows is just right, especially if you're not looking for the equivalent of a Marriott or Comfort Inn. Gecko Verde was the most thoroughly enjoyable place we have ever stayed, and we've vacationed thoughout the U.S., as well as numerous places in Mexico (back in the day, when it was safe), the Caribbean and Belize. The icing on this wonderful "home away from home," is that it is in Samara! My wife and I are of an age where we can and should retire to pursue all of the things we truly want to do instead of have to do. We are now planning to move to Costa Rica and it may well be that we end up in a place we learned to love very quicky -- close to El Pequeno Gecko Verde in Samara. Pura Vida!

Room Tip: All of the bungalows are excellent. Nathalie, an owner, recommended Guayaba for its privavcy as we were going to be there for a "long stay." Also, plan to pay your bill in cash; it will mean a 13% dicount!

I have been travelling a lot all over the world and this is actually the best hotel I have ever been to. Not the most posh, but the best. It is small and very beautiful, the garden is a big botanical garden with different plants and animals living in it. The cabins are simple but beautifully decorated and very clean and comfortable. It gets totally dark in the night and the only sounds you hear are all the animals...

The pool is really beautiful and you have it by yourself almost all day long. The staff is very friendly and the owners really helped us in many ways, since we were travelling with our nine months old daughter who got ill during our stay.

Breakfast is nice and the only problem here is that the hotel is too small to host a restaurant and a five minutes ride with the car from all the restaurants in Playa Samara, but the hotel is cooperating with four restaurants in Playa Samara so you can get food delivered from them in thirty minutes.

I would definitely recommend anyone to go to Gecko Verde and I really hope we will be able to come back!
