“Beautiful View, Great staff, peaceful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2014

My family and I stayed in a 2 bedroom villa. Modern, spacious, 2 balconies with spectacular ocean views. The Villas are a steep climb, great exercise, but they do have carts that run every 10 minutes or so to take you through out the resort. Grounds are very well kept, very clean, pools were very nice but smaller than I expected for this size resort. Although it was never an issue. Beach is down the hill and as shared they have transportation that takes you and picks you up. The beach is public and you do have vendors that try to entice you to go see time shares, or tours. Many a scam so send them on their way.
Villas Sol does have staff on the beach whom are very helpful, have activities, and around the bend which most people didn't realize they have complimentary water, and sodas for their guest. Its a small hut. The beach walk is beautiful, we hiked the rocks and found enclaves of secluded small beaches that were spectacular.
The mandatory all inclusive for RCI guest is my only negative. The food is ok. Some days much better than others. They have a wonderful spread of fresh fruits, breads etc.. The quality of the cuts of meat are not that great. For example a chicken dish for the night was pure chicken legs. The cost per person is to high. I have a 12 year old whom was charged at the rate which includes alcohol beverages. They need to change that to an adult rate and for people that don't drink have an option to purchase a non-alcohol package.
We enjoyed that native dishes and one day was dedicated to Costa Rica, they had a women making Tortillas and Empanadas by scratch and later had a class showing you how to make them. It was delicious.
I had read reviews about complaints to get into the small A la Cart restaurant. We had no problem with that, and once we went we decided we liked all the options at the main buffet restaurant better. The service and food was good but you only have 3 different options and the menu does not change daily. It is a small restaurant for 28 people so yes it would be a challenge to get in if you don't reserve way ahead of time. It is also used for private events such as weddings etc..
The gift shop in hotel of course was way over priced for incidentals. There is a shop in the Villas office when you first come in to the resort which was fair for incidentals, bottled water etc.. Up the road outside the resort to your left about two blocks down is a good grocery store too.
Overall it was a great trip. Gilbert from Concierge bends over backwards to make sure you and your family are happy and having a great time. Mauricio and all the staff by the pool are so much fun and full of great tips and information. We had a blast with them and loved their great attitudes.

Room Tip: Higher up the hill gives you spectacular views. some Villas have private pools but they truly are sm...

Pros: Playa Hermosa is beautiful. I actually really liked that the hotel was not right on the beach. The hotel is nestled in the hills above the cove, which makes for some pretty incredible panoramas, even if you decide to lounge by the pool. The shuttle comes often and if you would rather not take it, enjoy the 15-minute stroll and walk! Our room was clean and stayed nice and cool despite the hot days we spent there. We signed up for the Sunset Boat Tour and it was the highlight of our stay at the beach. If you agree to tour the villas and listen to a sales pitch for time shares, you can earn deep discounts at the spa and on some of the nicer activities/tours. We did the boat tour for free, and it cost us 2 hours of our time.

Cons: There was only one. While most staff were courteous and helpful, there were a few who were unkind. I am not sure if the concierges knew that I also speak Spanish - my guess is not, because I frequently overheard them making disparaging comments about American guests who needed their help. Our concierge, Gilbert, was very helpful and kind - but of those who shared his role, he was the exception.

Overall, a really nice stay in a picturesque part of a gorgeous country. Dry and warm even during the rainy season (and less crowded from June through August!).

Room Tip: Try to get rooms that end in -01 through -05 - these have balcony views of the cove where the hotel...

My wife and I just stayed there in early June..in one of the 1-bdr room villas on the hill...that was the best part, the villas are modern and large and ours had a good view/balcony. The food is probably the most dissappointing part becasue it is mandatory all inclusive..and my wife and i don't eat large meals or drink alot anymore .... The food was prepared well and plentifyul..just not always that interesting....we found ourselves going out to smaller restaurants in the area for variety. the ala carte restaruant (Heloncius) serves some interesting dishes..better than the buffet room. Activities are not very good..as this is a small resourt and we went at off-season. I found everyone who worked there (drivers, food staff, bar tender...dsek..) courteous and friendly....i don't know why other people reported this was not the cae. I would go back...especailly if the all-incluve package was optional. We went on some great tours offered by the resort..even though they were alittle expensive..we did the promo timeshare deal to bring down the costs.....it was not too hard a sell.....like I've seen other places.

The room was okay, but housekeeping didn't come the first night.

The buffet was sub par and although the restaurant said they opened at 6:30am, at 7:15am, they were still putting food out. You are "supposed" to get 1 dinner at their fancy restaurant for every 2 nights, they only gave us one voucher even though we were there for 5 nights. You then have to make reservations with the buffet restaurant on the morning that you want to go for dinner. When we went at 7:15am to breakfast and confirm dinner, they already said they were sold out for that night. We went by the restaurant on multiple days and all the tables were empty.

Not worth the money spent and you may also want to stay in Playa del Coco or Arenal for better scenery.

Finally, the shuttle service around the resort is non-existent. We called to have someone pick up and they never came. We never relied on them again.

Wifi is only available at the main hotel building in the reception area, not even 50 feet away or in your room!!!!

This resort was overall average and didn't make any effort to standout. The only exception was the customer service of front desk person Adrianna. She was superb and a delight to work with. Either they find away to clone her or hire 50 more employees just like her otherwise they aren't saying much AT ALL! One particular staff person named Bob from Scotland was particularly rude and unprofessional when he yelled at my friend and I and banged his fist on the table upset with us when we declined to purchase a timeshare. He told us WE WASTED HIS TIME!! and that the poor service we received was because we were not owners therefore not important to please. He snapped at us further when he lamented "fine! Continue to travel like you do" I wasn't a aware there was anything wrong with how I currently travel. I'm pretty well traveled in this world from Asia to Europe, Africa, Central and North America and never before have I been yelled at and made to feel bad by the people I trusted to show me hospitality. Aside from this they try to cheat you left in right in this country, and they don't want to accept their own money some places. The housekeepers stole my favorite lipstick and it should be noted that every decent and nice person I met outside the hotel was not from Costa Rica at all but neighboring Nicaragua. I could go on but I won't I think I left you all with enough to make an informed decision. Save yourself the trouble and skip this place and section of Costa Rica altogether

Stay away from this place, you can honestly find a cleaner, nicer with much better customer service and food at a different all inclusive very close by! Our room was not clean, the food was not very good, the service was horrible and the staff coordination was just plain bad!

Reviewing this resort is challenging....there was nothing "bad" about the property, but nothing particularly "great" either. Much of the positive and negative statements made in other reviews are a matter of perspective. You need to consider that this is Central America, not Mexico or Jamaica. The level of service, variety of food, etc. are not comparable - so don't try to compare them!
Also, it is important to consider that this is a relatively small and inexpensive resort....it is not fair to complain about lack of facilities if you knowingly booked a small resort!
We enjoyed our stay, and I hope the following helps you to decide whether this property is right for you.

Our room was in one of the many villas dotting the hillside. Very nice, clean, and modern, but not "luxurious". Yes, the walk up and down the hill can get tiring (particularly after a long session at the pool bar), but the hotel portion is very centrally located if you want less walking, and the shuttles are very efficient. We had rented a car for the week, and had no problems with free parking anywhere on the property.
We spoke with lots of guests staying in the hotel and the larger villas, and everyone was happy with their accommodations.

The food at the buffet was certainly good, but fairly repetitive from day to day and meal to meal. In other Central American countries I've noticed the same thing.....ingredients are somewhat limited, and meals are generally simple (meat dishes, mixed vegetables, rice, potatoes, and plantain). Lots of nice fruit and cold salads, but the hot items weren't awe inspiring. The service in the buffet restaurant was variable....some days there were water pitchers, some days there weren't. Some days breakfast was ready at 7:00, some days it was 7:15 before the hot trays were filled.
The a la carte restaurant was great, and the service was excellent. We would have eaten dinner there more often if we could.
The grill by the pool bar was a nice option, although again sometimes the selections and hours weren't as advertised.

The main pool is very nice, the small pool in front of the hotel is more suited for kids or lounging beside.

From what we heard, Internet access, room service, and laundry are very expensive. There are lots of restaurants off site that offer free WiFi.

The grounds themselves are very nice and well cared for. Lots of birds and lizards, and apparently monkeys although we didn't spot any. The walk/shuttle to the beach is pleasant, and the beach is lovely for walking, swimming, and she'll hunting past the southern end where the rock outcrops start. Very pleasant and friendly locals, and few beach vendors. The little town of Playa Hermosa has a surprising number of shops and restaurants if you want some variety, and of course the bustling tourist town of Playas del Coco is just a short cab ride away.

The area is quite beautiful and interesting..Lots of people we spoke with went on lots of different excursions and everyone had positive reviews. Having a rental car for the week was great....we toured everywhere from the Rincón volcano to Tamarindo beach. Note: car rental is very inexpensive, but the insurance is very pricey and mandatory. I used my credit card and had some of the insurance covered, but a $100 weeks rental became $300 with the liability insurance added.

Overall, it was a very good experience, but we went with realistic expectations so we weren't shocked or disappointed by anything. Small improvements in staff training and chef capabilities would go a long way to pushing the calibre of the resort up to the standards some people expect, but then again that would also likely push up the price.
