“Villas Sol, A Memorable Vacation”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

Villas Sol: “Pura Vida!” We stayed one week in the hotel (all-inclusive) and two weeks in a hillside Villa. Our hotel accommodation was lovely overlooking the pool, restaurant and bar. The Villa was absolutely breathtaking over looking Playa Hermosa. While we loved the resort it truly was the employees who made our stay so memorable. We were pleasantly surprised that the Villas had daily maid service. Whether it was the reception staff, the food and beverage staff, the activities staff, the maids, the landscaping staff or the security staff; every individual significantly contributed to the quality of our stay. We felt like we were part of the Villas Sol Family.

The restaurants at Villa Sol had lots of variety. Costa Rican food tends to be quite simple. We enjoyed some restaurants close by that had Indo-Asian food, fabulous seafood and Spanish Tapas. While in the Villas we also did some of our own shopping and cooking from local markets.

We travelled to Villas Sol through RCI. Gilbert was our RCI representative and he warmly met our every need. Over the three weeks we went to local restaurants, to Playa Coco, to Playa Tamarindo, visited volcanoes, went zip-lining through the canopy (with white faced monkeys) and did a sunset cruise by sailboat. We loved our experiences.

We stayed from the 7th to the 28th of July. While that is considered their rainy season; the reality for us was a refreshing late afternoon rain every few days. Right on our resort there was such interesting wildlife. There was a troupe of Howler Monkeys, Mealy Parrots, Green Iguanas, Anoles and more. They too added to our experience. Playa Hermosa has black sand as a result of the many volcanoes in Costa Rica. The beach and the swimming pools offered lots of water activities for guests. We enjoyed our stay so much that we are already making plans to return!

Room Tip: We loved the villas! They were very spacious and had a full equipped kitchen. If you are looking f...

The view from our villa was great but thats about all. Very pricey internet, need a major updating to the resort & villas is needed, the food was the same almost everyday we had one person in our group that wouldn't eat it at all would rather buy food from the little expensive store at the bottom of the hill near front gate, the front desk did not seam to know what was going half the time and took them forever to figure it out if at all.The Resort doesn't have any mini-bar in room nor do they have non-motorized water equipment! And the trams rides where very crazy those hills are very steep.Don't waste your $!!!! And I also read all the reviews on Tripadvisor and took our chances but should always listen to past travelers they are right buyer beware stay someplace else

I purchased a reservation through groupon and was extremely disappointed to learn that the resort failed to indicate the additional fees involved including $100 transportation fee from the airport 10 minutes away as well as the $100 reservation fee. The advertisement specifies date restrictions, and cancellation policies but none of these required costs. Each person I spoke to gave different information about our trip and our reservation and I still don't know if any of them were being truthful. I would make other arrangements for transportation but I won't spend hundreds of dollars on flights and excursion reservations to only be deceived by the resort again. Sorry, this resort will not get my business!

The view was lovely but had to take a tram down to the beach. Except for very few restaurants at Playa Hermosa, we had to take a $20 taxi ride to get to Coco Bay where there were more restaurants and shops.Food and drink on the resort plentiful but mediocre. Our room ac barely cooled but we had view, friend's room cold but no view. Cleaning of rooms was late if done at all. Even though traveling on a Groupon, they pushed us for taking a tour to buy into the resort. Tried to switch from our Groupon to a time-share type tour by offering free sunset cruise but I caught it - so read your paperwork carefully people! Airport lovely and easy to come and go. On the bright side, the Costa Rican people were VERY friendly and accomodating. Would stay somewhere we could walk to dining and shops like Tamarind.

Room Tip: You don't spend much time in your room but be sure that what you want - whether immediate beach...

I am not sure how I feel about Villas Sol, the hotel was okay the one thing that bothered me was that it was too big. The shuttle's were available but I had no idea where to tell them to go. The information wasn't relayed well in regards to where everything is. It took us forever to find water on our first day. They keep on bottles at the front desk and all the things were closed by the time we got there. Also there is no Wireless there, the one is only near the reception area and extremely slow. We were told that the Resort was fully wireless a few years ago but they switched companies so no longer. Its hard not to be able to keep in touch to let family know you are fine, I understand you are on vacation but still need to research the area around. They promote Swiss Travels PLEASE DON'T USE THEM THEY SUCK! Swiss Travels was our bad experience in to CR and a terrible bitter taste while leaving CR. They take no responsibility for anything. I would suggest vacation rentals or other resorts.

Room Tip: There is free wireless a hotel over if you absolutely need to check something and not pay 10 dollars...

This is a large resort with many staff and the activity workers, bar keeps and cleaners are helpful, friendly and polite.  Same cannot be said for the front office staff.  There is a communication problem that is not just language.  We purchased a time share membership here 12 years age and this was our 4th visit.  Making a booking is always a problem.  When you are here it does not seem to be full but try and make a reservation and suddenly they have no room.  They  DO have the money we put out for the time share however. We always have trouble pinning down the dates we want and then usually have to move after we arrive as they have us in a unit other than what we requested etc. This trip when we arrived we were given keys to a unit but when we went to the room it was under renovation so we went back to the office and had to wait an hour while they found something else for us. The second room was up high with a fabulous view but the two other units beside it were under construction which meant saws and drills all day long.  The workmen knocked out the power one day and the T.V. the next The unit we were in was probably next as the melamine on the kitchen cabinets was lifting and the cuboards falling off their hinges. The toilet ran continually for the two weeks we were there (noisy and a great waste of water)  We mentioned several times but nothing was done.  We spent four weeks in Costa Rice and in the preceding two weeks stayed in a number of places all of whom offered free wifi.  Villas Sol charges $60 a week for this service.  It's sister resort next door, Condovac, provides this service free to its customers.
