Worst hotel ever. You don’t want to stay here disgusting grosses and horrible place. Towels were dirty so were the sheets. There were lights in the hallway on all day and night and lit up our room.
Save your money and stay somewhere else…

This was our first stop in Costa Rica and we wish we would have stayed at least one more night. The hotel was very clean and nicely decorated. The beach is wonderful and we could walk out our door and be on the beach almost instantly. We read the reviews before we left and asked for a quiet room away from the restaurant. They placed us in a nice room in the back of the hotel. We were trying to decide between El Velero and Hotel Playa Hermosa “Bosque del Mar” and after walking down the beach to Bosque , we were happy we chose El Velero. Restaurant and bar were fun, staff was friendly and food and pina coladas were very good.
We ate breakfast up the road at the Hotel Acacia. The fresh fruit was wonderful.. The Ginger Restaurant further up the road was very nice for dinner. The tuna appetizer was great.
Taxis are expensive in Playa Hermosa because they need to come from Playa Cocoa. You'll need to walk a ways to restaurants.
We were there the end of May 2007 and the hotel and beach were not crowded at all. All those people on the plane from Houston must have stayed at the all-inclusives . We made the better choice.

While in Costa Rica, my husband and I decided to make an unplanned side trip to the beach. We stopped at an Internet Cafe and did a quick search for hotels and found Hotel El Velaro to be interesting so we took a chance and drove there. The website does not even begin to describe how lovely this hotel is. It is the only one (that we saw) that sat directly on the beach. Rates were reasonable $70/night, and the restaurant wait staff could not have been more helpful or accomodating. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Everything is very "open air"; restaurant, lobby and while views of ocean aren't great from the second floor, the large open porch are relaxing and comfortable with the sound of the waves just meters away. The beach is not overcrowded and is cleaner than most.

Downsides: rooms are warm and air conditioning is slow to cool things down when the temperature soars! Neighborhood kitties like to wander through the grounds and restaurant. There is a LOT of construction being done in the immediate area surrounding the hotel, but did not interfere with our stay and was not even apparant while staying here. Neighborhood is dark so I don't know whether I would have done much walking around after dark, but there was a small grocery store nearby to pickup anything needed.

Overall, our stay was delightful and an evening swim under the moon/stars was the perfect end to a relaxing day!

Several years ago my Costa Rican husband and I stayed at Playa Hermosa Inn, so we decided to go there again. However, we were not as happy with the facilities and price this time, so we decided to give the nearby El Velero a try. We were very satisfied with the value for what we received. The hotel is right on the beach, so it isn't necessary to drive down from the hillside in order to swim, and the price is definitely more moderate than those hillside hotels. As others have noted, the rooms aren't ocean view, but they are comfortable, clean, and roomy. Ours did have a TV as well as air conditioning, bedside lamps, and a coffee maker with coffee provided free (many places charge for that little packet of coffee!) The one thing I didn't like about the room is that there is a frosted glass window facing the hallway, and at night the hall light shone into the room, making it hard for me to get to sleep. I don't know if all the rooms have this false window or only those on the first floor.
We found the service friendly and accomodating. The restaurant was very expensive, and we didn't find the food especially good for the money. However, we did not find many more reasonable restaurants within walking distance either. The truth about Playa Hermosa as with most parts of Costa Rica is that the prices are rising drastically with the rising influx of U.S. and Canadian tourists, so it's becoming harder and harder for the humble working class (teachers like us) to find affordable vacations. But the same is true just about anywhere that has a high tourism rate, and Playa Hermosa is still cheaper than most U.S. beach destinations.
The veranda/reading room upstairs is charming--Costa Rican rocking chairs looking out over the small pool, wicker furniture, and a selection of books for those who need reading material. It's a nice place to relax and listen to the waves break.
All in all for a beachfront hotel at affordable prices, El Velero fits the bill. We would return.

We stayed at El Velero May 11-14. The hotel is in a great location in Playa Hermosa, with direct access to the beach. It's probably the most centrally located hotel in Playa Hermosa.

Overall, we enjoyed this hotel and thought it was a good value; however, the hotel could use some updating. Our room had basic accomodations with a king bed, air conditioning, and cable television. The bathroom was in need of updating. The bathroom floor and shower tiles "appeared" dirty, probably because they are old (I wore shower shoes).

We used the pool, which could also use a good cleaning (lots of debris and bugs).

We ate several meals at the hotel restaurant and found the food to be quite good. There was a good selection of typical Costa Rican and American food. Our servers were very friendly and helpful.

One of the memorable experiences about this hotel is that every morning we could hear the howler monkeys howling from the trees nearby.

If you are looking for a quaint hotel at a good price, this is for you. This is not a hotel for travelers looking for luxury accomodations.

Pros:
1. Great location - Directly on the beach and only 20 minutes from Liberia airport
2. Great price for budget travelers
3. Great restaurant and bar

Cons:
1. Rooms / hotel could use some updating
2. Front desk staff could improve their level of service (we didn't find them to be extremely friendly or accomodating).

First for the good stuff--great location, great bar area by the pool and beach, convenient to Liberia airport. For the not so good--the room smelled moldy, paint was peeling in the room, there were some stains (looked like beverages?) on the wall. It seemed like it could be a really great hotel, but they need to do some maintenance.

I read all of the great reviews here on Tripadvisor and called to arrange our stay. We were only staying one night and meeting our friends the next day. Since we were renting a home in the hills above Hermosa we only needed one night.
I wished we had checked out after we went to the room. With 2 kids under 4 and having travelled 9 hours this is not an easy task. So we resigned ourselves to the gross room we were given and decided to make the best of it. The room was on lower level and smelled of mold( not cooking grease). It was not clean other than the origami towels, little else had been worked on. The toilet was filthy the floors had dead bugs and dust balls, there was a 2 foot patch of wall by the bed that was flaking off and no one had even swept it!! Also killing mosquitoes all night was quite the highlight.
We just kept telling ourselves it just one night and this is what you get for the money....
The restaurant was not much better. The site of the retaurant is quaint and charming but the service and food were bland and unremarkable, as was the breakfast we had the next day.
Thank goodness for the pool our kids had something to do. They did not like to beach due to the waves- hard to swim and the water was murky.
We were not fortunate to have Robert or Mike there like the other reviewers, furthermore we didnt want to complain about things that should have been better to begin with.
Luckily we had a gorgeous home with pool and views to go to the next day that more than made up for it.
Spend your money somewhere else.
