The best of both worlds... beautiful foliage and natural surroundings, with all the comforts of a big city hotel. The service was excellent, from perfectly brewed coffee and a delicious breakfast in the morning to a 5-star gourmet dinner at night. The owners are so welcoming and friendly, ready to share their great advice to ensure you don't miss a thing while staying here. The located is very central, easy access to beach, restaurants (although I wouldn't miss a meal at Cantarana!) grocery store, and a quick river taxi to Tamarindo. The hotel is small and intimate, with a nice pool and comfy yet simple rooms. Mellow vibe, great for relaxing or reading by the pool. Once again, I will mention the incredible food. The freshest fish, exotically prepared by a most interesting and inventive chef. We loved this place and would definately stay here again.

We stayed in late February/ early March at Hotel Cantarana, and it turned out to be a perfect choice. The hosts, Marion and Reinhardt, saw to our every need, and went "above and beyond" in every way, supplying us with directions, suggestions for places to go, and many more services. The staff was friendly and helpful as well. The restaurant offers gourmet chef-prepared dinners, which are magnificent in flavor and presentation, and the breakfasts feature a smorgasbord of choices including hearty whole grain bread, tropical fruit, yogurt, eggs, cereals, meats and cheeses. The open dining area sits on an elevated level, where you can enjoy the breezes and watching the birds in the surrounding trees. The property is well manicured and lovely, with a pool and lounging chairs for spending some down time. Proximity to the beautiful Playa Grande beach is a 5-minute walk, and to Tamarindo by water taxi during the day about 15-20 minutes (depending on when the water taxi arrives). For evening visits to Tamarindo, you would need a car.

This is a great spot for doing a few day trips in the area, including visiting other beaches close by, Guaytil, Palo Verde, Rancho Humo, surfing, or taking a sailing trip. There is a small, well-stocked grocery store around the corner, within walking distance. For optimum enjoyment of this general area, it would be best to have a car at your disposal.

My husband and I stayed here for the last 5 days of our 2 week trip to Costa Rica. After hearing people say that we would get bored in PG for 2 days, we were a little worried. But we had a great time! Cantarana was wonderful!

We ate breakfast at the hotel every day, and were full every time! We also ate dinner in the restauarant twice, which is an absolute must even if you end up staying in a different hotel. The food is excellent!

We stayed in the hotel's guesthouse, which is actually 300m away from the main hotel. The walk was hot, but definitely manageable for us. If you have any mobility issues, I wouldn't recommend staying in the guesthouse, as the road is a little rough.

We loved our stay here, it was quiet and relaxing. The beach was one of the best I've ever seen - you could walk forever and see hardly anyone. If you're looking for a relaxing holiday, I would definitely recommend it.

My fiancé and I stayed at Hotel Cantarana in December, 2010 for 7 nights and had a truly spectacular vacation!

It was our first trip to Costa Rica and we wanted to find an area that was within an hour from a major airport, close to a great beach with surfing, activities and good restaurants.
Playa Grande fit the bill in every way.

Hotel Cantarana is a very special little place. It is a wonderful value, clean, well manicured, offers great service, a beautiful open-air restaurant, nice rooms, and to top it off the most unbelievable breakfast is served every morning.

Marion and Reinhart were wonderful hosts and extremely helpful with advising us on activities, directions, restaurants and anything else we needed. They were so warm and friendly, always available, and very informative about Costa Rica. The hotel staff was equally warm and welcoming.
Marion and Reinhart also own a small market around the corner which is great for picking up snacks and beverages.

Playa Grande is a beautiful, deserted stretch of beach. You have to walk down and across a dirt road from Cantarana to reach the beach access, but it’s an easy walk and just adds to the charm of the Playa Grande area.
• There is a small surf camp down the road that rents surf boards.
• Marion can set you up with kayaks to take out on the estuary which is a short walk through the neighborhood.
• Ripjacks restaurant is a short drive and had consistently good dinners.
• A day trip to Rincon de la Vieja National Park is well worth it.
• Be sure and eat at a soda for the experience (and cheap food!)
• If you take a drive to Brasilito, lunch at Camaron Dorado on the beach was one of the best I've ever had....the whole fried fish was delicious!

In summary, Playa Grande is a beautiful and fun area to explore, with a few good restaurants, and I’m not sure there’s a better place to stay than the Hotel Cantarana.
Thanks TripAdvisor for leading us to the little gem!

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful four night visit to the Hotel Cantarana in December 2010. The owners, Marion and Reinhardt, were the perfect hosts and provided helpful tips on day trips and activities around Playa Grande. The grounds are spotless and the rooms clean and well equipped. The Restaurant is great and the breakfast is the best in Costa Rica. The Cantarana is a special place and we give it our highest recommendation.

My wife and I enjoyed the first few nights of our honeymoon at Hotel Cantarana. The owners and staff provided incredible service, including a fresh coconut welcome cocktail, which was the perfect thing after a day of travel.

The food was among the best we've ever had, and as it was a weeknight in the off season, one night we had the whole restaurant to ourselves.

We stayed at several similarly priced hotels in other parts of Costa Rica, and this was by far the best experience.

I rarely write reviews for anything - this place was special enough for me to take the time to review it. Hope you have as great a time as we did when you visit.

The only potential downside would be if you are looking to partake in the nightlife of Tamarindo - the taxi ride back to Playa Grande is costly - otherwise, the water taxi, which only runs during the day, works well.
