Sol y Luna Lodge
Ranked #4 of 6 Playa Grande B&B and Inns
Reviewed December 6, 2013

I've stayed at Sol y Luna Lodge for a week, between the end November and the beginning of December. My stay at the lodge was more than wonderful!
The location is perfect to visit Playa Grande and to have good time. The bungalows, very clean and spacious, are equipped with any kind of amenities, and are beautifully furnished. The beds very comfortable.
I enjoyed every day the pool area but also the back terraces they just add quality to the bungalows.
Monkeys pass over the lodge every morning and come back later in the afternoon, at around 5 pm. They feel like at home there, and look at you like asking "who're you?!"
Alex is a great host, good communication and easy to deal with.
For any need you can ask to him or to Simon that is 24 hours there. I have to say, the whole team is really kind and at your full disposal!
I would recommend this place to anyone and I'm looking forward to hopefully returning one day!

We decided to visit Playa Grande for a chance to see the leatherback turtles and surf the legendary waves. Luckily, we weren't disappointed on either count. Sol Y Luna Lodge was the perfect place to stay. Alex, the manager, is wonderful, and extremely personable. He went above and beyond to make sure that we enjoyed our time there. The bungalow is beautiful, with unique artwork and a fully furnished kitchen. We have stayed in bungalows a lot, and unfortunately we have found that they often sacrifice comfort for the aesthetic of being a bungalow. Not so at Sol Y Luna- here you'll find A/C, tv, a bathtub, and an amazing porch and hammock. This place is much more accessible with a car, and a good nearby alternative to super-touristy Tamarindo. Just know that there isn't a whole lot going on in Playa Grande :)

My time at the property was the low point of my vacation. The room had a very unpleasant odor to it. I tried airing it out during the afternoon and running the fan but the smell would not quit. There was no blanket, only a set of sheets on the bed and they were stained. The mosquito net did it's best to keep the bugs out but that didn't stop other creatures from popping their heads in and making noise in the night. The property itself smelled like sewage so there was nowhere to go but to the beach. The beach itself was very beautiful and there were very colorful crabs on the trail out there. I made a couple mistakes while I was there. I left my sandals on the empty beach while we were walking and they were stolen. The walk back to the lodge felt a lot longer with no shoes! I also made the mistake of drinking the water. There wasn't really anywhere to get bottled water in the vicinity so I did it without thinking of the consequences. I was very sick for the remainder of my trip. My trip was during the rainy season so I understand that the village of Playa Grande wasn't bustling, but there was only one restaurant and no other businesses to be found. Maybe another time of year would have been better but it felt eerily empty.

Sol y Luna Lodge was everything we hoped for and then some! The huts had all the basics - kitchen with mini-fridge, coffee maker & hotplate. Sitting area with TV that we never used, but a nice option. Comfy bed with mosquito netting if you choose open doors rather than A/C at night. The best was the back porch with 2 hammocks - the perfect place to chill or read a book while watching the hummingbirds on the floral hedge and listen to the howler monkeys.

There are only 8 huts on the property, all a very short stroll to the beautiful pool, whirlpool and swim up bar. It's HOT in Guanacaste, so the pool got much use! The staff and owner Alex were extremely helpful and attentive. If Marco is still bar tending when you go there, you must try his mojitos!

We spent our mornings jogging on the beach, followed by a dip in the pool, then lunch at any of several fine places within a 20 minute drive. Back for sunset on Playa Grande and another dip in the pool. We stayed 5 days, but I wished we could have stayed 5 weeks. So relaxing and peaceful!

Worth mentioning - Sol y Luna is in a very natural setting and very eco-friendly. It is perfect for me and other folks who enjoy nature and prefer relaxation to large crowds. For example, there are no screens on the doors of the huts and I do not opt for A/C. The bugs weren't bad, but we did get a few bites. To me, this is expected and a small price to pay for the atmosphere. But if you're the kind of person that jumps when you see a moth in the room, or runs for the deet at your first bug bit you may be better off in one of the larger, more formal hotels.

Enjoy your own cabin with a bedroom, living room and a kitchen. Relax on a hammock in the afternoon and listen to the birds sing! Walk to Playa Grande which is a spectacular beach to not only surf. You have to walk the white sands to appreciate the beauty! Sometimes you are in a crowd of surfers and the next you are walking almost alone on the white sands. Just spectacular. The area people are so friendly too. The Sol y Luna has a nice swim up bar with friendly staff and you are in a different world. Secluded and special! Try it. You do not always have to stay in the perfect hotel! Stay here. Try it...it is so nice!

this place is amazing and beautiful! we went durring the dry season yet the property was lush and green. 5 minute walking distance from the town and the beach yet still so secluded that you dont feel like youre part of some hotel chain. this place seems so secluded that even many of the locals didnt know about it and when we brought some back to our place to visit, even they talked about how amazing the place was! the service is great as well. the big boss Alex always had a smile and was always asking if we were having a good time and always was asking if we needed anything. when we did need something alex was always able to provide or to give us information on how to obtain what we needed. Alex and his staff were very courteous and were always happy to help. i loved this place!

We loved the very unique and beautiful surroundings. The landscaped grounds and the rustic, air conditioned bungalows with a nice pool for cooling off, are little peace of heaven. It's a short walk to the beach(Playa Grande) for swimming , surfing and amazing sunsets. Alex greeted us with a very warm welcome to his Sol y Luna Lodge. It was a great experience .We stayed 16 days and loved every moment! Sol y Luna is in walking distance to a couple very good restaurants and bars in the area. We took many day trips seeing lots of beaches and so much more. The staff are helpful, cheerful and work hard to make your stay carefree. Great place for couples romantic and family ,so very peaceful like heaven on earth. We loved it so much we are going back . Alex is a very good host every need he makes come true !! a great place stay in costa Rica We recommend to everyone you will be very happy staying here you wont want to go home you will feel your at home thank you Alex and staff your the best !!!
