Great food, secluded beaches, and the friendliest people made the Rip Jack Inn a wonderful place to stay. The room, and especially the bathrooom, were smaller than other hotels we had stayed at in Costa Rica, but the space was not a hindrance. A.C. in the room. The staff was extraordinarily amiable and made sure we had everything that we needed, including beach towels and a flashlight. The food at the restaurant upstairs was great . The beach was almost empty except for a few surfers. Perfect to enjoy a sunset in peace.

We stayed at the Rip Jack for a week and it was absolutely perfect for our quiet getaway. The rooms are great with no phones or TVs to distract you from relaxing. Gregory and the staff were absolutely wonderful and went out their way to arrange shuttles, outdoor adventures, and any other demands their guests may have. The food was out of this world delicious, and the chocolate-chili ice cream is a must try! They have a bi-weekly yoga class, but it was so quiet and the beds were so cozy that I overslept and missed it. We'll definitely try and make it back next year.

My husband and I went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon and visited Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Monteverde and Arenal. We had an amazing time at each location, but the highlight of our trip was when we stayed at the Rip Jack Inn in Playa Grande. The Inn is adorable, and just steps away from the beach. There was a great beach break in front of the Inn, so my husband got a lot of great surf. The restaraunt at Rip Jack has sunset views and absolutely amazing food- the best food we had our whole 10day trip!! The thing we liked most about Rip Jack is the people that work there. The owners of Rip Jack are originally from California and were on their honeymoon when they fell in love with Costa Rica and decided to move there for good and open up the hotel. We became great friends with the hotel manager, Greggory, who was originally from California and who also fell in love with the area and way of life. It was hard for my husband and I to leave, but we are already planning our next trip to Costa Rica. Of course, we will go back to stay and visit our good friends at Rip Jack Inn!

We had a great time at the Rip Jack. The service is great. They help you with all your activities. The restaurant has great food and is a place you can just hang out. The only suggestion I would have for them is that they have some chairs out in the open areas. The beach is just a very short walk along a path. We took surf lessons from Ian. He came directly to the hotel and I highly recommend him. We had never surfed before and he was very patient. You can also rent surfboards and boogie boards from Ian. Just let him know and he'll drop them off at the hotel. Another great eating place in Playa Grande is at Hotel Bula Bula.

We loved Playa Grande. The beach is nice there and it's not crowded. We had everything we needed at the Rip Jack and if we wanted to eat at another restaurant we just went to a different hotel in Playa Grande. Tamarindo is a short water taxi ride from Playa Grande in case you needed something at the supermarket. (By the way, We did not like Tamarindo at all. The beach was "nasty" and it is very "touristy") FYI, Century 21 Realty has divided Playa Grande into lots and they are up for sale. Nothing is being built now, but some of the lots have already sold.

All the other reviews are true - the staff is friendly, the food is good, the beach is beautiful, and the pets are adorable.
So in a nutshell here are some recommendations (for those who don't want to read my LONG review!):
1. Rent a car! you'll have way more freedom and probably won't get so bored like we did. Roundtrip cab fare to Playa Conchal (for snorkeling) cost us $50 US... so if you keep taking cabs it adds up and you might as well rent a car.
2. Bring lots of books and magazines, even board games or portable DVD player if you're worried about getting bored.
3. If you're on a student budget like us eat at Kike's!

We stayed at the Rip Jack for 10 days and were overall happy with our stay at the Inn. However, 10 days was way way too long! Because Playa Grande is a little out of the way theres really not much to do. If you want to do any tours (like snorkelling, sailing) you have to go from Tamarindo... and unless you have a rental car or are willing to pay for a cab theres no way to get back after sunset (like 5pm). So because we didn't have a rental car and were on a really tight budget, we were really limited with what we could do. We suggest 5 days for people without rental cars.

We enjoyed the food at the restaurant, but we found that on a student budget it was a bit on the pricey side. Especially when we could walk 10min up the street to Kike's and eat for 1/4 the price. Definitely recommend eating at Kike's! You can easily have dinner for 2 with drinks for under $10 US, whereas the Rip Jack would cost you at least $40. Save your money! Although the food isn't as fancy and elegantly served, everything we tried at Kike's was super yummy. We actually preferred the food at Kike's over the Rip Jack and not just because it was cheaper.

The rooms are really simple. No TV, no clock, no phone... we got really bored... you can only sit around on the beach for so many days. My boyfriend had a really hard time sleeping due to the mattress and pillows... he's used to futons and flater pillows.

And one last thing, because Playa Grande is such a relaxed, slow paced place where marijuana is the drug of choice, the people are a bit loopy... We really didn't mind this and it wasn't a problem at all until the end when we felt like we had to keep repeating our requests and questions to the management to get an answer or result. I think this was because there were like 4 different managers who don't necessarily communicate with one another, and so we kept having to talk to each one separately to get everyone on the same page.

My husband and I Stayed at the rip jack March19-23 2007. Wonderful staff, delicious food, clean rooms, very short walk to beach. My husband surfs and had good waves the entire time. When the surf was down the beach was deserted and and you felt like you had your own private beach. We stayed in room under the kitchen and could hear some noise at night and in morning around 7am. Next time I would stay in room not attached to main building. But I am also a light sleeper. Tv would be nice at night time after dinner but they do have books and magazines upstairs for you to borrow. I hear a pool is being added which would be great for those windy days on the beach. All in all a great stay and would definitely recomend this place. Thanks Gregory and Annie and all of the staff.

Several months ago, we purchased raffle tickets for a "first class resort stay in Costa Rica". Winning the raffle was the first surprise. But hearing the name of our "resort" destination was perhaps a bigger surprise. I mean, who would name a "resort" RipJack Inn?!?

Internet research confirmed our suspicions about the type of place to which we were headed. But the reviews of RipJack Inn were overwhelmingly favorable, so we began to feel less apprehensive, and an uneasy excitement about our upcoming trip to Costa Rica began to build.

Our one-week stay in Playa Grande at the RipJack Inn is sadly behind us now. And the verdict is in. RipJack Inn was an unexpected pleasure! It offered a return to the basics. No clocks. No phones in the rooms. No dress code. No hurry. No worry. The beautiful location took us away from the noise of life and allowed us to see nature, to feel nature, and to hear nature. The beach was a short walk from our room. And Playa Grande is a beautiful beach! The waves attract a lot of surfers. The beach is a few miles long, so it was never crowded.

The management and staff were kind and helpful and always easy-going about everything. Despite the easygoing attitude, important details were not overlooked. We were impressed that Gregory lined up all the activities that we were interested in and found transportation for us whenever it was needed. Food in the restaurant was very good, and attractively presented by efficient and friendly servers. The friendly familiar atmosphere was a big part of RipJack's unfogettable charm. We quickly began to feel attached to Nubia, Augustina, Gregory, Annie, .....

We stayed in Cabina 7, one of the two rooms that are not attached to the main building. The room is not fancy, but has everything that is necessary. However it could be improved by adding shelves or a closet for clothing and such. We also missed having a couple of chairs in the room. A flashlight is part of each room's furnishings. We really appreciated having the flashlight for walks at night, and because a common problem in Costa Rica is frequent power outages. (Power was down a few hours the second to the last night of our stay.)

Overall, our week at RipJack Inn exceeded our expectations in almost every way. It was a memorable vacation.
