We had a wonderful ten day stay at Las Tortugas in February. If you are looking for five star luxury with beach volleyball this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a comfortable, clean place right on a magnificent beach, then las tortugas is a great place to spend time. The staff are great and very helpful. Louis and Carri are always around to make suggestions and Jonathan is a wonderful guide. We went out one night with a guide to see black turtles come ashore to lay their eggs and that was a special experience. The meals are very good value and are very good Costa Rican food. The sea food was excellent.. I would highly recommend Las Tortugas.

Room Tip: Ask for room 11. It's a bit more expensive but the view off the balcony is to die for.

I stayed for 10 days, and they were all great. This is a perfect place to enjoy life. The staff is very friendly and competent. Any view can go right on a postcard. World class surfing, unforgettable tours, white sand beaches and black sand beaches. I saw crocodiles, ibis, kingfishers, cranes, sardines running from a big fish, and snorkeled with fish of all colors of the rainbow and an octopus. Funny comments from the guides make it even easier to appreciate: you can learn monkey family social structure, taste tamarindo fruit and see Guanacaste tree, symbols of the area. You can learn that iguanas do not have wives or fiancés, just "friends with benefits". In the hotel yard there are plenty of fat iguanas who would be happy to eat the cereal or bread that you'd give them. Birds right from paradise would come close to wish you good morning.
You are right in the heart of nature, yet close to any aspect of civilization you might want.
All guests I saw, from tiny tots till golden age, looked very happy at Las Tortugas.

Room Tip: the description of rooms you get from hotel administration is very realistic. trust it

Ignore any negative reviews. This place is a simple but charming little hotel that has an unbeatable location, a wonderful staff, well-kept grounds, a great pool, and enough hammocks to sleep away the day if you want.

If you are looking for some kind of Ramada-By-The-Sea...there are plenty of other places in more developed parts of Costa Rica for you. This is a place that puts you about 30 feet from a wide, beautiful sandy beach that is one of the most important sea turtle nurseries in the world. It is a wild and wonderful beach with great surf, sand, and very few people.

As someone pointed out, you can't see the beach because of the "shrubs." Also known as "nature" to some people.

The food at the restaurant is tasty, if simple. The beers are ice cold. The rooms are clean and cooled nicely by AC.

A wonderful place to escape from it all.

I stayed here a few years ago so this review may be a little time late but I was very pleased with the location, right next to the best break in Playa Grande and all the amenities you need to relax in C.R. if you're on a low budget (but not that low) surf trip. We stayed in a hostel-like room in the back of the compound for something like $25 a night, which was fine, it was clean and we spent most of our time either at the bar, in the pool, swinging in a hammock, or in the lineup. Would recommend to any surfers looking to get a little out of the way from Tamarindo and closer to the superior breaks of Playa Grande.

Las Tortugas is in a great location on the beautiful Playa Grande but the staff and room were e let down.

The front desk staff was unaware of our reservation, which is a small enough mistake in itself, but after we told her the price that was agreed on in email she balked and tried sending us down the street to another hotel. From this point forward she went out of her way making rude comments.

In addition, the room itself was very small and with no windows that opened it felt like a dungeon. We were not happy that the AC was on when we were shown the room and promptly turned it off for the remainder of our stay. The AC may have been on to hide the smell coming from the shower drain that was backed up in the morning.

My friends and I booked 3 different rooms for our stay. The pictures of the hotel on their website is deceiving. It makes the hotel look modern and airy but the hotel is dated, run down, and broken. You cannot see the beach from anywhere in the hotel due to shrubbery. No one is allowed on the beach from 6pm to 6am unless you pay $25 to see the sea turtles.

The flush handle in our toilet was broken which led me to believe that they did not clean the toilet. A little scary. The bedding did not fit the odd size bed. Mirror in the bathroom has obviously not been cleaned in a while along with many things. My husband started to make coffee in the morning then proceeded to tell me that we definitely will not be drinking coffee here because I do not want to know what's in the coffee machine. I took a chance and asked the woman at reception whether they had shampoo and conditioner and she laughed at me and said 'no'. I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask since we did pay $130 for the room.

The only thing nice about this hotel is the proximity to the beach. But there are plenty of nice beaches in Costa Rica. This is probably a good place for you to stay if you would like to see the sea turtles otherwise I would suggest you to spend the money somewhere else.

Wow, what a charming place. This hotel is right on one of the best surfing beaches in Costa Rica. Let me say this again....right on the beach! Great for families and surfers; this beautiful charming and unique hotel is filled with all the right stuff! Great food, awesome outdoor eating, a wonderful pool surrounded by trees and plants and professional/warm staff.

You will be glad to have found this secret treasure in Costa Rica!
