“Surf trip? This is your spot!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2012

First of all I would recommend asking yourself what you expect from your trip to CR. if you want to feel like you're still in North America then this is not the right hotel for you. If you Want to be RIGHT ON THE BEACH, directly in front of the main surf peak and staying at a hotel that feels Costa Rican and Authentic.... this is the best hotel in Playa Grande. It takes about 30 steps to get from the pool to the beach. If you're a big sissy and you're going to cry about your room or the hotel not looking like it was built yesterday... this isn't your spot. If you like a spot that has real soul and character in a hotel, this one has tons. ask the locals about Louis, the guy who built this hotel way back in the day. He's still around most days chatting with everyone at the hotel and being helpful in any way he can. He's legendary in the area and known as the first person to ever surf Playa Grande. You really feel like your staying somewhere special at Hotel Las Tortugas. My girlfriend and I stayed for two weeks to just surf and chill out. We got a great rate on our room and its rad to be able to just eat and bill everything to your room. its way easier just paying for your food at the end of the trip. all the staff are great, mostly tico, which some might think is inconvenient when it comes to language barrier and what not but it makes the hotel and restaurant so authentic. I don't want to go on a travel trip so I can stay in a hotel that feels the same as back home. This place is truly amazing to stay at. The location is absolutely as good as you could ever hope. The sunsets are insane. The pool is so good and there are tons of hammocks strung up all over the property. The hotel is older but our room was always super clean. there is free wifi and you can sit on the patio of the restaurant overlooking the waves and enjoy the breeze being close to the water. We walked around and checked out all the hotels close by and there are some other nice hotels in the area but they're all farther away from the beach. Being able to check the waves without walking to the beach is so awesome. I feel spoiled having stayed there. We've already booked a trip for this June and will be staying at Hotel Las Tortugas again. The surf is really fun too. bigger and less crowded than Tamarindo. the whole town of Playa Grande is mellower and got a better vibe than Tamarindo or even MalPais/Santa Teresa for that matter. I've always gone back to Playa Guiones in the past but I think this will be my go-to spot from now on.

I can't say enough good about this amazing hotel!

exactly what we were expecting and desired- prior trip advisor reviews were on the money and we just want to reaffirm what a laidback, beachside small, surf and nature oriented place this is-we had room # 3- actually a suite with 2 prettily tiled bathrooms and 2 bedrooms plus a patio we used mostly to dry the bathing suits we pretty much lived in-staff was helpful and friendly- jonathan took us on a great estuary canoe tour- staff also helped us in booking a sunset horseback ride on nearby beaches- nextdoor tacostar provided surf school and great tacos-the pool , hot tub and hammocks, never too crowded, provided respite from the hot beach- sunsets an unavoidable beauty-only weaker note is food- great smoothies and mango margaritas but would recommend checking out neighboring restaurants and hotels for variety in that dept-if you want a beach break , surf wise or otherwise, far ( enough, though within reasonable reach ) from the madding tourist crowd, las tortugas is where its at

Room Tip: room #3 was great for a family and could actually sleep 7 surf buddies comfortably- there are some g...

We love this hotel because the staff treat you like family. There are 11 rooms in the hotel, 10 cabins, and 11 apartments.
The restaurant and bar can't be beat. They overlook the ocean and nature is everywhere. Lots of hammocks in the shade and the pool is great! The staff changes the water every day in the hot tub. We feel very safe here and you can drink the tap water. Once you visit las tortugas, you will return. This was our third year and we have met people who have been coming here for 5 and 10 years. Surfing is extremely good.

Beds are terrible, we both woke up w sore backs and immwdiately checked into the Rip Jack Inn down the street. Sheets were old and didnt fit the bed, kept alipping off the corners by morning the sheets were bunched up. Blankets were old but functional. A/C worked very well but was old and really noisy.

Location ia great but the hotel needs work in the comfort area. needs new mattresses, new linens. rooms would benefit from a fresh paint job.

beach closes at 7pm due to protection of turtle nesting but who needs to be out there after dark?

I wont recommend this hotel when the Rip Jack is just down the road and has everything right.

This place was great. We stayed in Greek 4 and loved it. It was cheap, clean, and in a great location. When we arrived there was a group of howler monkeys sitting in the tree outside our window! We went to Playa Grande for a chance to see the sea turtles and Las Tortugas was situated just across the street from where the tour was, which was very convenient. Everyone who worked there was very friendly and helpful. They set up the turtle tour for us, as well as a canoe tour around the estuary, where we saw a lot of wildlife, including crocodiles!
We loved how Playa Grande was a little more remote than nearby Tamarindo. It didn't have noise or crowds the Tamarindo did. Also, there was very little light pollution, so while it was a bit dark when walking the streets at night I felt good knowing there was no light to disturbed the sea turtles. The only thing to keep in mind, esp if you don't have a car and can go somewhere else easily, is that no where nearby accepts card. Also the nearest ATM we found was in Tamarindo. So just bring enough cash to do everything you want and you won't regret staying here.

Even though Hotel Las Tortugas was more expensive than our other lodgings in Costa Rica, I made reservations here because it seemed to be the 'go to' hotel for the turtle nesting tours. The room wasn't dated. It was just plain shabby. The mattress was lumpy and it felt like it was full of sand. The bathroom was so out of date that the one outlet couldn't handle a grounded plug. On top of the disappointing room, the front desk staff was rude and unable to provide us with even the most basic information, like the time or meeting location, for turtle tours.

I spend three to six months in Costa Rica each year and am always searching for places that make me feel "right at home". There are several nice hotels in Playa Grande, but there is only one that offers the "total package"......nice rooms and apartments, an awesome staff, a full service restaurant with an excellent menu and reasonable prices, all the amenities that you expect at a beach resort, and my favorite time of the day....HAPPY HOUR! (Don't even think of missing out on the mango margaritas!) Whenever I stay at the beach, I want to be on the beach and, in all of Playa Grande, there is only one hotel on the beach....Hotel Las Tortugas. Your room will be steps away from one of the most beautiful, wide, white sand beaches in Costa Rica and, of course, the incredible sunsets. (I think of sunsets on Playa Grande as the Key West experience...Tico style.) The Hotel Las Tortugas family will make you feel "right at home", too. I am homesick already, but, luckily, I made my reservations for 2012, before I even left this special place in paradise

Room Tip: The rooms and apartments are all different, so it was easy to find one to fit your needs.....PERFECT...
