Corynne took the time to give good advice by email as we were planning our trip. They have a good selection of boards in good condition - long, short, fish, etc. at good rental prices. My wife got a great prenatal massage while I was out surfing. The store is clean and well run. More importantly, they are good people. You will not find friendly, trustworthy interactions like this elsewhere. My wife and I highly recommend frijoles locos. Corynne and Krizia made my wife's day and I got a great board and good surf session.

Corynne, an Aussie transplant, is the major reason our family trip to Playa Grande is so filled with so many incredible memories. She has a charismatic personality and is more than eager to help. Corynne booked tours for us to Palo Verde National Park, Playa Grande Estuary tours, Pura Adventura, and a Turtle tour. She also arranged transportation for our party of 9 to go out to dinner with minimal notice. We also used her services to shuttle us to/from the Liberia airport. We rented bikes as well which she and her husband, Ian, arranged for both drop off and pick up. Thanks so much for making our vacation memorable and effortless!

Our family enjoyed two lessons with Frijoles Locos Surf Shop. All five of us got up multiple times and our 3 children ended up renting boards for the rest of the week from them. We were staying on Playa Grande so it was easy to go out to the beach and meet the instructors. I think they picked up some other people who weren't staying so close to the beach. The instructors were patient, encouraging and fun. This was a highlight of our trip and months later our kids are still talking about it and how they can't wait to go back.

We are a family of 4 with a 12 y/o boy and 11 y/o girl. All of us love to be active on vacations and truly love the beach. We have a wide range of interests and by no means require luxury or pampering on our vacations. That being said, we truly appreciate people, places and things of high quality and tend to gravitate toward those.

This past March, we had a family vacation in Playa Grande, Costa Rica. This is the third year in a row that we have visited CR for Spring break, having stayed in different areas each time. (Malpais and Peninsula Papagayo (Four Seasons)) By far, this was our favorite trip to CR!

We planned a 10 day vacation and decided to split it up between 5 days in PG and 5 days at the JW Marriott, Guanacaste. On the recommendation of a good friend who is a serious surfer, we decided to stay at Frijoles Locos for the surf part. We expected that after several days of learning to surf and experience the local culture we would be more than ready for some luxury at the JW Marriott. As it turned out, the first 5 days of the trip were by far the better part and we found ourselves wanting to go back to the beauty, authenticity and peace of Playa Grande and Frijoles Locos.

At Frijoles Locos we stayed in the 2 bedroom condo attached to the back of the surf shop. The condo has ample room for a family of four with all modern amenities (AC, WiFi, kitchen with appliances etc.) There is a nice pool in the back to cool off as well. Based on the rate it's an incredible value and a great place to stay for a family.

The best part of staying there were the people who own the business (Corynne and Ian) and our surf instructor Rob from North Carolina. Corynne and Ian are incredible hosts and welcomed our family as if we had known them for many years. Rob was a great surf instructor and worked hard, with great patience, to help us all become better surfers. We had such a great time with all of them that we all went out to dinner together on our last night at a great spot called the Garden Grille. Awesome food and super friendly service.

Speaking of food, the local restaurants at PG are some of the best spots for authentic CR dining we've experienced and frankly serve some of the tastiest, healthy and fresh food we have ever had. In addition to the great dinner at the Garden Grille, we loved breakfast, lunch and dinner at RipJacks, dinner at Cage Del Pueblo and had tasty fish tacos (Marlin!) at Mar Bar. Again, some of the best food we have had on vacation anywhere.

The beach at PG is spectacular. Waves are perfect, the water is 80+ degrees, the sand is white and soft, there are no rocks and best of all very few people. It is a far cry from Tamarindo (just down the beach), which in our opinion is not even worth a brief visit (unless you need reassurance that PG is the best place to be).

When we arrived at the JW Marriott, we were impressed by the beautiful grounds but truly missed the beauty, tranquility and peace of PG and the hospitality and surfing experience we had at Frijoles Locos.

We plan to return for our next surf vacation and cannot say enough good things about our stay at Frijoles Locos and PG. Thanks Corynne, Ian and Rob for a great experience.

We are so happy to hear that you had a great time here at Frijoles Locos. We would have loved to have you stay here the whole time too, but we understand the lure of JW luxury too :)
Playa Grande does have a beautiful, long, sandy beach, and it is perfect for all levels of surfers.. while one part of the beach can be best for experienced surfers, there are plenty of places all along to beach to learn in uncrowded, easier waves.
For such a small town, Playa Grande is blessed with a great selection of quality dining options, thanks for mentioning some of those.
One of the best parts of our business is meeting great people, and helping them have a great vacation. Thanks for the positive feedback.
