This is the only sit-down restaurant on Playa Grande near Tamarindo. It is an old-fashioned beach hotel with a truly wonderful beach atmosphere. The menu is somewhat limited but very local in structure and flavour. Try something different here. The portions are reasonably small and that is just fine. Fries are served with almost everything at lunch - but they are very tasty. The second-story deck is nicely shaded, with friendly lizards sunbathing on the roof next door, and monkeys feeding in the trees.
This is the beach that is protected after sunset between November and March. Some of the very few remaining leatherback turtles in the world nest here, so perhaps you'd like to stay after dark on moonless nights and get a guide to take you onto the beach for a chance at seeing one of nature's most astounding sights.
During the day, this is a sunbather's and surfer's paradise. The 5-kilometer beach is almost empty even during high season, the surf breaks beautifully in about 3 different spots, and Las Tortugas Restaurant provides a welcome respite from the heat.
