it is not easy to travel on the cheap and be spoiled by an empty beach but that is exactly what PGSC offers. A half mile away lies the hordes that make up the tourist trap of Tamarindo but the estuary that separates Playa Grande from Tamarindo along with the National Park protecting the nesting sea turtles, keeps this little piece of costa rica an undeveloped gem. Splurge for the A-frame Cabina to get A/C and you'll be as safe and happy as a traveller can be. The major perks include being 50 yards from the beach / Amercian hosts / great neighborhood eats / and of course great waves on a nearly deserted beach!!!

I've surfed at Play Grande Surf Camp the past two Decembers and plan on going back as time permits. Gerry keeps the facilities clean and well kept. He also makes sure his guests have the right boards and of course instruction for those like myself that are still somewhat new to the sport. Furthermore, it's never a dull moment out in the water with Gerry and all of his guests!
If you want a clean, convenient place to hang out and catch as many waves as possible, this is the place.

The Surf Camp is situated in Palm Beach, towards the southern end of Playa Grande. There is a choice of private Cabinas with A/C or dorm-style Pilotis for those on a tighter budget. Accomodation is the rustic/hostel type, however is clean and well maintained. There is an outdoor relaxation area with a pool, ranchos to protect you from infrequent rainstorms, or to escape the heat of the day, and a newly-built barbecue, around which we tended to congregate in the evening for a few beers. They also have 3 very friendly dogs.

The guests were a friendly bunch - mainly surfers, and backpackers wanting to take the leatherback turtle tours which run from the north end of Playa Grande every evening. In terms of surfing, the Camp is right across the road from the beach access, so you have a 2 minute walk to some of the most consistent surf in the whole of Costa Rica...

The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help. In addition to surfboard hire and very professional/patient surf instructors, they were happy to book shuttle buses, estuary tours and turtle tours for guests and nothing was too much trouble.

In terms of nightlife Playa Grande is fairly quiet, though there is a small selection of decent restaurants and a couple of bars within a short walking distance. If you are looking for something more energetic Tamarindo is only a boat or taxi ride away - but beware, after the paradise of jungle and beach that is Playa Grande, Tamarindo is a vision of hell by comparison.

Ideal place for surfers or backpackers on a budget, helpful and friendly staff, close to the beach and some excellent surf - highly recommended.

Charming yet rustic, PGSC offers a friendly and casual atmosphere just far enough from Tamarindo. Enjoy the beautiful uncrowded beach just a block from the camp or take advantage of the stores and restaurants in town. You can reach Tamarindo via a charming boat ride from a neighboring establishment, car or a lovely long walk on the beach. Being a beginner surfer, the uncrowded beach was a blessing as there were few witnesses to my blunders and failed attempts. The instructor (and owner) was patient, helpful and actually had me up sooner than I thought possible. The laid-back lodging is situated around a pool which lends itself to hanging out with other guests and fellow travelers. I would highly recommend PGSC for a casual, inexpensive spot off the beaten path.

After traveling around Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama I would have to say that Playa Grande was one of my favorite places. If you're really looking to get away... then Playa Grande is great! I learned to surf by taking excellent one -on-one surf lessons at Playa Grande Surf Camp. I stayed in several rooms there and have to recommend the open pilotis for an authentic experience. They can get a little warm with no A/C but there are several fans and the pool is only a few steps away. The waves are consistent and right out in front of the camp! The beach is wonderful and never has very many people. I could go for an hour walk down the beach or surf for hours and only see a few other people. Playa Grande is super chill, quiet and relaxing, and I always felt safe there.
