Playa grande surf hotel was great. Super cheap to stay there and worth every penny. The location is awesome. Steps away from a big beautiful beach with super fun waves.
Can't wait to go back
Thanks for an awesome experience

Both stays at PGSC were out of this world. If you want to get away to a private setting with beautiful beaches steps from ur cabina this is the spot. Gerry g( owner) was an amazing host and made sure our every need was met. Not an easy job considering it was eight college boys! Will be returning very soon for more good times!!

PGSC Thank you once again for a wonderful stay. Been a return customer for 7 years and never been disappointed. 2 minute walk to a great surfing beach with REAL waves!! Early morning got to see baby turtles heading out to sea. Swimming pool great place to hang out when you are done with the beach. Good WiFi Simple small clean room with COLD working A/C Fun place to meet other travelers and network.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY ONCE AGAIN.
I will be back!

Keep your expectations low. I'll start with the only positive I have. While the cabinas were very small and very minimal, the AC worked wonderfully, which is very needed. Be prepared to drive on some pretty bumpy roads with gnarly washboards. Maybe we caught them during a bad time (which I can't understand because there were only a few other people there the 4 nights we stayed), but the hosts were not great, to put it nicely. When we did see them, they at least gave us fleeting eye contact, but they were never available. While the price, which I thought was way too pricey for the terrible services/accommodations, states that includes breakfast, be prepared to eat your own food or go out to breakfast. The breakfast ranged from two pieces of toast one morning to one roll and a slice of watermelon another morning. Thankfully we had brought our own surfboards, because the hosts were not available to set up renting one of their boards during the few hours they offered to rent their boards for the most expensive price in the entire area. The shared bathrooms were disgusting; toilet overflowing, cold showers, other people's hair and "body stuff" everywhere, no toilet paper, etc. I would not recommend this place and I will never be returning there. To Playa Grande, most definitely, but to PGSC, never.

Room Tip: Only the rooms with A/C. Seriously.

Dear xgoodman, from Costa Rica,

First of all I would like to thank you for taking the time to review Playa Grande Surf Camp. We are always looking for ways to improve our guests experiences here at the Surf Camp. I would like to address the issues you raised individually.

1) The roads
Yes, the short dirt road leading from Playa Grande to our little community is something that not everyone is used to. Thankfully, this area of Costa Rica is very well paved, and that is the only dirt road you have to take. Not to many years ago the whole way to Playa Grande was unpaved. We have absolutely nothing to do with the roads.

2) The hosts.
I must admit that this one puzzled me the most since we live on the premises and make ourselves available to our guests from 7 am until the time we go to bed at night. My husband and I almost never leave at the same time to ensure that someone is always available to rent boards or even if they simply have a question. We leave the front door open on the porch to let people know that we are available to them. Since your review we have also started to leave the back door open as well.

3) Breakfast
Breakfast is a recent amenity we started in December. It includes two slices of toast, fresh cut fruit, bananas (when available), juice, coffee, as well as butter and jam for the toast. We have received nothing but positive reviews from our breakfast, most people are surprised that it is included in our price. We just wanted to have something to offer our guest in the morning and be able to connect with our guests as they start their day. Of course, if you don't find it filling enough we do have the kitchen that can be used to make any additional food that you may want. We have not raised our rates in 8 years. Yes, the breakfast is bare bones. It is a new thing we give to our guests for free without having changed our rates.

4) Bathrooms.
We have taken this comment very seriously. We have someone here all day who keeps the premise clean and I have reiterated our expectations of the cleanliness of our washrooms upon reading your review. She cleans the washroom every half hour and ensures that everything is fully stocked. Since your review I personally check on the washrooms several times a day as well. Also after your visit (but before your review) we made several updates to our washrooms. And yes the water is cold, but as you mentioned in your review, it is very hot here and is another way to cool off.

Once again thank you for your review, we are grateful for the opportunity to improve the quality and experience of each and every guest.

Amazing little piece of paradise! This is my second trip here. First was with a girlfriend, had a great time. Amazing host, chill atmosphere, quiet beach, good waves. Just a walk along the beach from the party town of Tamarindo. Booked a week at PG Surf camp and a week in Tamarindo and ended up cancelling The Tamarindo reservation because PGSC was too great to leave! This trip I'm flying solo. Again great hospitality, welcoming guests, and a complete sense of safety and security among a small community. Highly recommend!

ok, i admit, i was disappointed when we first walked into our wee tiny little cabin. the mildew smell, the cramped quarters, the small beds on either side of the room, didn't seem like my idea of romantic. but ohmygosh, we had so much fun!! the owners are super nice and completely available but completely inobtrusive. we stayed in one of the wee cabins and at first were the only people there! another couple came but we rarely saw them, each of us prefering to keep to ourselves. the bathroom is kind of icky and cold water only, but the cold water actually felt very refreshing. we availed ourselves of the kitchen to cook some of our own meals, but also walked around the corner to the restaurant next to the supermarket--another super awesome place with amazing food and a very friendly english speaking maitre d. there were maybe ten other people spread the entire length of the beach when we were there and just over all felt super low key and gave us what we were looking for--a chance to totally kick back and just be. the mildew would be my biggest deterant to going back here, but not being a resort person and finding the uniqueness of the place had a charm that grew on me, i would definitely go back here!
