Justin will go above and beyond to help you with whatever you need. The value for money is excellent. The rooms are small, but they have hot showers and air conditioners. The location is fabulous-acroos from the most stunning, huge beach!
One suggestion is that the hotel invest in some beach umbrellas or sun shades to lend/rent to their guests.
The pools is a nice feature, and the restaurant and bar, including the Raw Bar are very nice

This place was a wonderful deal! Super short walk to the beach. Close to a suprising amout of dining. Really friendly staff. Surfboard rentals. Only downside was the bed was like doorm room bed. Not too cushiony.

Pura vida

If you want to experience Costa Rica surfing, relaxing, family atmosphere and good food for a very affordable price, look no further. Justen and his wife, the staff are friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. They can take care of all your needs, get you the best tours and services available and most of the time for a much better price then you can negotiate yourself.
Costa Rica is not a destination for foodies, but the food here is way above the average. We tried many other restaurants, in fine hotels, local places and we always came to the same conclusion.
The food at Playa Grande inn is just better. The rooms are simple and clean. We stayed here for 3 weeks with our 3 year old, made friends and can't wait to come back for another great vacation.

Room Tip: We stayed in the apartment, sleeps 4 or more, great for family with kids, lot's of room!!!!

First off: play grande is great and if this is what is available and you want to stay in Grande - you should probably do it. It is a relaxed place with a great location.

But personally - I would look into other options. We spoke with several other guests at the PGI and have the following comments:

A) breakfast is at 730 (ish) and consists of some pre sliced loaves of bread and jam, maybe Nutella, maybe peanut butter, maybe butter. (It depends.) there is fresh fruit everyday. The coffee does not do justice to the deliciousness of Costa Rican coffee.

B) the rooms have varying AC, which is unfortunate because it gets very hot on the second floor in the afternoon.

C) room cleaning is random and varied

D) water may or may not come out as hot or cold or maybe not at all.

E) there is limited cleaning after bar hours - in the morning there may be cigarettes or bottles scattered around after the evenings festivities.

F) bar activities (voices and/or concerts) may keep up into evening.

Summary: this is a place for friends that spend all their time in the water and then drinking. If you are looking for something that also provides a nice room or atmosphere for being alone or just relaxing you should look elsewhere.

Dear atb85 from Norway,

First off: Thanks for taking the time review our little beach Inn on Trip Advisor. We agree that Playa Grande is a great relaxed place and we enjoy a great location. We also agree that if you ever come back to Playa Grande you should look into other options so you can find something that might be more suited to what your looking for in a vacation.

So here are our comments on your comments;

A) Our free continental style breakfast is set out and ready to go by 7.30 am and had proved very popular with our guests. It consists of loaves of bread from a local bakery for toasting, butter, jelly, (sometimes Nutella), fresh fruit, juice and coffee. We are not sure what you mean by your comment that " the coffee does not do justice to the deliciousness of Costa Rican coffee" as we only brew delicious premium Costa Rican coffee.

B) It does indeed get very hot in Costa Rica at the beach sometimes but we did not hear anything from you at the time about your air conditioning unit not working correctly as we would have called out a technician right away. We have had no further complaints about the functionality of that unit since your departure.

To preface the rest of your complaints (C, D, E and F) I must explain that during the time of your visit ( the week between Christmas and New Year) Playa Grande is the busiest that it can be. That being said, our staff were working extremely hard to keep up with the extra demand that a holiday week at the beach can bring.

C) Your room got cleaned ( albeit random and varied, whatever that means).

D) The town itself is subject to water shortages and outages, something beyond our control but we understand it can be very frustrating.

E) We are sorry if there was any unsightly debris around the property in the morning. We have made a special effort to make sure that this does not happen again.

F) There was one "concert" during your stay. One man with a guitar and an amp. It was over at 9pm on the dot if that's what you mean by keeping up into the evening.

Summary: Yes, you are correct. Many people that are friends do enjoy coming here and spending all day in the water and then enjoy some drinks and food at our restaurant or elsewhere. Thank you again for your review and good luck in your future travels.

My girlfriend and I stayed at PGI for 1-2 weeks. We've been travelling around Costa Rica for 2 months and this is by far the best place we've stayed in.

Justen and Lindsay are amazing hosts and incredible people! They really do absolutely ANYTHING to make sure you're happy. Thank you.

The facilities are exceptional. 2 minute walk to the beach (sick wave), great food - Lindsay's chocolate brownies are to die for!, board rental, and TV's, pool, ping pong... are all bonuses. Everything you could want is hear!

Manrique makes awesome cocktails and will make sure your glass is never empty and Marvin's Tuna Carpaccio is highly recommendable. Leo and Chad are great, friendly people and will make your stay fun.

All in all, PGI is a no brainer - GO!

Thank you everyone and especially Justen and Lindsay. Keep up the amazing work and see you soon. Danni and Scott
