“A good choice.”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

We made a good choice staying here. We felt welcome and the small hotel was nicely kept. The reviews below mine are spot on.

Room Tip: Upstairs is nice.

Playa Grande is a quiet surfer area with a great beach. La Marejada is one of three hotels right by the beach (two minute walk to the beach on a path through a protected area for turtles).

Very clean rooms, basic (no TV), good A/C, comfortable beds, shower had little pressure. Very peaceful and relaxing. Easy drive to Tamarindo and other beaches, playa grande was a great way to escape from all the craziness. Mostly couples and singles at Playa Grande rather than families.

Good food at La Marejada and Rip Jack inn as well as Playa Grande Inn. Fun to buy a drink and bring it to the beach to watch the sun go down.

Room Tip: They only have 7 rooms and all looked pretty much the same.

My wife and I stayed at La Marejada Hotel for a few nights during our stay in Guanacaste. The owners, Carli and Gail, were fantastic. They responded promptly to a few issues we had, and also helped set us up with a turtle tour, surf lessons, and transportation.

The location is probably about as good as it gets in Playa Grande. Unfortunately it's not "on" the beach, but the beach is just a minute or two walk along a nature path. Part of what makes Playa Grande special is that there is very little development on the beach. Only a couple of places in Playa Grande actually are beachfront, and those places are further from the restaurants/bars that surround La Marejada.

Staying at La Marejada is a bit inconvenient without a car, but we managed. There seem to be only one or two taxis in Playa Grande. We needed a taxi a couple of times to get to the other end of Playa Grande -- once to eat at Hotel Cantarana's restaurant and another time to catch a boat taxi to Tamarindo. The cost is $10 each way to get to the other side of Playa Grande.

Our room was generally clean, but I noticed a few cobwebs on the bathroom ceiling. Wireless internet was available in our room, but I don't think it's guaranteed. We lucked out by having a room closer to the office where the wi-fi router is located. The water pressure in the room was inconsistent and for the most part pretty low.

The pool was refreshing after coming back from the beach. The area around the pool was mostly shady, so not good for sunbathing. The hotel bar, Mar Bar, was decent but the service was slow sometimes.

Note that the Leatherback Turtles, one of the attractions at Playa Grande, were very scarce during this past season. You can take the tour through Hotel Las Tortugas from mid-October until mid-February, but there's a good chance you'll be disappointed and not see any turtles. Carli and Gail arranged an alternate turtle tour, which took us to another beach where we saw several Pacific Green Sea turtles.

Despite the few shortcomings that I mention, we enjoyed our stay at La Marejada, and we're thankful to Gail and Carli for making our Playa Grande experience a fantastic one.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the office receive a wifi signal.

We stayed here in February 2012 for 5 nights. After the long drive from San Jose we were absolutely delighted to arrive at La Marejada. The room was clean and bright with a lovely stone shower. We spent lovely lazy afternoons in the garden near the pool. Gail and Carli are the nicest hosts you could ask for. The place has a real chilled out vibe that we really loved.
Playa Grande was a great base for exploring the local beaches.
We had breakfast at the Mar Bar most mornings, which is really lovely but we did find it expensive (and we live in London!). It's a nice place to have a beer in the evening though and there was always a nice atmosphere.
I couldn't recommend this place highly enough. We would love to go back!

Room Tip: The rooms upstairs have a great view of the pool!

La Marejada Hotel sits in a little cluster of hotels with Rip Jack Inn, Playa Grande Inn and Ranch Provado (although RP appeared closed) about 100 yards off the beach. Each hotels offers food and drinks and hotel patrons are free to mix-and-match, eating and drinking in the bar/restaurant as they like. Playa Grande is a premier surf location so the beach is nice mix of locals and tourists from sun-up to sunset. This was the most appealing aspect of the stay and location for me as I was not interested in Tamarindo with it's Daytona Beach like craziness. However, the BEST reason to stay at La Marejada are the owners Gail and Carli. They are just a couple of surf/beach chicks that make you feel right at home.

Wife and I just returned from a 4 day stay at the La Marejada in Playa Grande. Clean, relaxing and friendly hotel. Owners are on site and very helpful with local suggestions for fun things to do. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking to just relax and enjoy chilling. Steps from the beach and close to lots of good food. Eggs benedict at the Mar Bar is highly recommended for breakfast.

My husband and I stayed at the Marejada last week and I can't recommend it highly enough. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the rooms are comfy and clean. The pool is shady and relaxing. The food was excellent. It is just a few steps from the beach and a few other small hotels so you can have options for dining. We already want to go back!
