“Disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014

we just arrived and Joseph the manager was welcoming and a nice guy... but it's a place to avoid!!. It is dirty and run down. The pool has lots of leaves and insect bodies floating and lots more on the bottom. Our room is very basic and there are no facilities like a fridge or kettle- in fact there's not a glass. The wardrobe doors don't slide properly. We'll try to find another place tomorrow

Room Tip: Don't check in

The staff were nice but this hotel is in no way worth what they charge. There is no wifi in the rooms, no blankets on the beds (only a top sheet), and they lack even the most basic amenities. I would in no way recommend this hotel, all there flaws can be easily overlooked if one were staying in a hostel or a lower end hotel but because of the price and location it was extremely frustrating.

Room Tip: Just go to Tamarindo, it has a better environment, greater selection and greater value for your mone...

So sorry to say but this place is disgusting. We booked a room through booking.com. We were told there was a private beach, air conditioning and a beautiful view of the water. WRONG
We were 2 floors down in the basement with no lights on either the stairs or the hallway. The air conditioning didn't work and it was 88 degrees. Oh yes, the mattresses were in the shape of a V no exaggeration no sleep here. The beach was not accessible with about 200 steps down on broken stairs. Tried to get some compensation back, the owner was very rude and blames booking.com. I have tried to reach booking.com but can't. They also didn't put my review on line - wonder why. The waiter was very nice. This is the only positive thing I can say so WATCH OUT.

This was the worst place I've ever stayed. The A/C was broken and there were no windows to open, the mattress was bent on the bed and there were no mattress covers, and our whole bodies ached from how awful the beds were. The owner was incredibly rude, and our room was all the way down four flights of stairs with no elevator. The staircases are not even lit, so you have to walk down them in the pitch dark. There is no private beach, either. You have to walk down about 300 crooked, broken stairs to get to a tiny beach where you cannot swim. You have to drive down the street to get to a decent beach. We paid $180 for the room, and it was more disgusting than a Motel 6 in the US. It was not even clean. The owner refused to give us any of our money back for the inconvenience. We've stayed at other beautiful hotels in Costa Rica for much, much, much less money. STAY AWAY! This place is disgusting, and the owner is a jerk.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are down in a dark basement, not the rooms pictured on the website. If you do deci...

Every morning we had breakfast on the terrace with the most incredible view. At night we saw an awesome night sky and display of fireflies off the same terrace. We visited during low season so the hotel was very quiet. It would have been nice to see lots of people hanging out there.

The management and staff were a huge influence towards making our vacation even more special. Josef and his team went above and beyond.

We found the food at the hotel more creative and tastier than food offered at other restaurants down the hill so we chose to have dinner there often. Prices were very reasonable as well. We really enjoyed the chats with Robert as he served our dinner or drinks at the bar.

We appreciated being able to access the small beach so we could snorkel as often as we liked without having to drive anywhere. The snorkelling at the hotel was as good as if not better than at Playa Conchel or on the excursion we took.

Some things you should know: there is no fridge or hair dyer in the rooms. Our air conditioner worked fine but they are loud. There are a lot of geckos and swamp crabs that often found their way into our ground floor room. Maybe the 2nd floor rooms are less likely to have some of those visitors? We have visited many tropical destinations and this seems to be a common thing so we don't get too excited about that. They offer a free room safe and wifi was accessible from our room but might not be at all rooms. It was available in the main lobby and terrace.

The hotel helped link us up with the Lazy Lizard sunset cruise and we highly recommend this one! No long drives, they transport you to and from your hotel, give you great tunes, drinks, food and the best snorkelling guide we have had before. The sunset was incredible from the catamaran. Lazy Lizard provides you with all of the equipment you need for swimming or snorkelling.

We would definately go back to the El Sabenaro Beach Hotel if the same management team was there to great us. It is one of the more economical hotels in the area but is clean and the view and service is outstanding.

I did call to Expedia on August 2013. I did ask to help me to find the nice hotel which one located very close to the ocean because we need to swim every day. Expedia sold to me the room at El Sabanero Beach hotel. I am 60 and my husband's sister is 55. We are from Washington State- it's 15 hours to fly there to Flamingo beach, Costa Rica.
But hotel does not have a private beach and located on a hill. They say that
hotel did have a long stairs down to go to the beach but it is closed now because it is broken.
Our room was very much noisy with old style of air-condition- we did not sleep first and only one night and did run away next morning to the different hotel. Swimming pool was with crabs and leaves from trees.
On November we came to El Sabanero from airport LIR at 23:30 and there was only one night guard and he did not speak English and he opened a room with one King size bed. We made reservation 3 months ago for two beds of Qween size. It did take long time before he understood that we want a room with two bed Qween size...We moved to different room. This room did not have refrigerator, no bottle water to take a pills. The balcony not possible to lock by night time, the safe did not work, no coffee maker. The Check -out at 12 pm at El Sabanero and we moved out at 10:30 am but Expedia did charge for 2 nights. Why? We are not happy with Expedia who did make a bad joke to us and told us that El Sabanero is good hotel to stay and it is near ocean. It is NOT. I think may be this hotel for people who are going to go to see tropical forest and they do not like to swim in the ocean. I did speak with Joseph- manager of hotel and he told me that he is going to fix his hotel. When? Who knows...

I struggled with whether to writing a candid review about this hotel, because it may hurt their business, but I wouldn't want anyone else to be drawn in by the wonderful web photos they provide and then have to spend valuable vacation time at this rundown resort.

My daughter and I wanted to end our two week vacation at a nice relaxing beach hotel. When we arrived, the driveway was so neglected with pealing paint on the brick walls, weeds growing through concrete and decayed plant debris in the ditches. It was so neglected that we thought the hotel was abandoned! We were the only two guest for the three days of our stay. Since the access to the hotel's beach was closed due to dilapidated stairs, we spent the majority of our time at the beach on the opposite side of the peninsula.

When we entered the enormous foyer we were instantly drawn to the spectacular view of the ocean and distant islands. The manager was friendly and generously offered to carry our bags to our room.

The room was very basic with another spectacular view. The room was clean, no complaints there. Mattresses were very hard with equally hard pillows. Since I prefer a firm mattress it wasn't a problem for me, but my daughter's back bothered her after one night.

The towels felt like they had been starched. The shower was dreadful with water spraying everywhere.

The property was so neglected with iguana feces on the pool deck that remained for there for the three days of our stay. The lawn surrounding the pool hadn't been tended to in a very long time. The pool had dead crabs on the bottom and leaves floating all over the surface.

The complimentary breakfast was very basic and served one item at a time as we asked for them. The coffee was the worst I tasted during our two week stay in Costa Rica. My daughter got food poisoning and spent two days vomiting with severe diarrhea. In an effort to obtain a glass of cold water for her, I entered the kitchen where I thought I heard a voice, only to discover no one around and the condition in a deplorable state.

On a positive note, the manager's wife was very helpful in getting us an Interbus for an earlier departure without additional fees. The bartender/waiter, was a very kind and thoughtful man with a wonderful personality. His skills are truly wasted at this hotel.
