We had a fantastic week at the Flamingo Beach Resort & Spa. Upon returning home to sub-freezing temperatures and snow, I fondly reminisce about the beautiful beach, the attentive and personable service of the resort staff, and very relaxing atmosphere at Playa Flamingo.
Service is what defines the Flamingo Beach Resort. Everyone, from security at the resort's gate, to front desk personnel, to restaurant servers, to cleaning staff, was friendly, cheerful, patient, exceptionally polite, and attentive. I can't say that about too many hotels and resorts I have stayed at in the U.S. or in Europe.
Close behind the service, the beautiful beach 5-10 steps away from the resort stood out. As has been noted by others in their reviews, the beach is a public beach that lies on the other side of a narrow access road. Approximately 1 mile long, it's wide and with a reasonably gradual slope into deeper water. At either end there were some rocky areas, but 95% is fine for swimming, water sports, or just relaxing. Although local residents enjoy the beach along with a few condominiums down the beach from the resort, there was abundant room for resort guests. It was never crowded, and this was the week between Christmas and New Years. It is not powdery white sand, but it was very soft and very, very clean. One other point worth mentioning - it is not a snorkeling beach. We went snorkeling on a kayaking tour that took us to a small island just off the peninsula on which the resort sits, and found a limited area of coral and a nice variety of fish, but it was nowhere close to the snorkeling in the Virgin Islands.
The resort looks and feels like a family run facility run for families. It was very comfortable, very clean, and the buildings and grounds were attractive and well maintained. We had lower level rooms, and the only negative was lack of view out the window - we could basically see the hedge separating the rooms from the pool. The beds were comfortable and the furnishings simple but functional. The pool was large, with a nice children's area and a swim up bar.The fitness center was reasonably well equipped, with a fixed weight multi-station unit, a range of barbells, and several ellipticals, cycles, and treadmills. Across from the fitness center, on the second floor above the lobby area, there was a family game area, with pool tables, ping pong, and foosball, as well as a small movie theater and store.
Other reviewers seem to have had mixed opinions about the food. My family and I thought that the menu was fairly basic, but the food was well prepared and very good. We had the European plan, with included breakfasts. There was a nice selection of fresh fruits, cereals, eggs and other hot entrees, and an omelet station. We also ate several lunches and dinners there. A note about pricing - I thought it was quite reasonable for both food and drinks; for a family of 5 adults, we were spending about $60-$70 for lunch and $120-$140 for dinner.
Is the Flamingo Beach Resort a 5 circle property? I'd say closer to 4.5, but of course Trip Advisor uses whole numbers, so a 4 seems appropriate. As others have written, the rooms were comparable to a Hampton Inn. Comfortable, clean, relaxing, but not 5 circle level. Also, the resort seems to struggle with the beach towel issue. Always running out, it seemed. Get there early, and exchange them late in the evening! Also, wi-fi and cellular data access is a bit spotty and erratic. Also, if you are looking for an abundance of nearby shopping or nightlife, this is probably not the place for you.
Overall, we had a great time. We loved the resort, and certainly would return if we were to visit Costa Rica again.

We are so happy that your escape to Costa Rica from freezing temperatures back home was a fantastic one at our beautiful resort! Your review was fair, objective and thoughtful, and we appreciate the time you took to share your observations and experiences in this forum. We are very glad you enjoyed the food and we are always working to improve our menu, quality, service and presentation. We really do hope that you and your family will come back and see us again. When you do return, you will be sure to see some upgrades in the guestrooms and bathrooms. Regarding the cellphone/wi fi access, so many people flock to Costa Rica's beaches during the week between Christmas and New Years that the system gets overloaded and crashes constantly; please accept our apologies for this inconvenience.

A friend and I stayed here for one night after her business trip since the hotel from her business trip was waaaay out of our budget. We liked this this hotel so much we immediately considered changing our reservations last minute to stay another night. Ultimately, we decided not to for 2 reasons: 1) the town in which this is located has NOTHING to do. 2) we wanted a change of scenery to the mountains outside San Jose. If you are looking for just beach time, this is the place for you. Or, you need to have a car to get to another town where there are more options. we didn't have a car and had to walk to find restaurants/entertainment.
Service was great. we were greeted at our car upon arrival and given a cool punch while we checked in. The breakfast buffet was very good. We learned that all beaches in Costa Rica are public and this beach is across a small street from the resort. So, you have to deal with vendors trying to sell you jewelry and food but they aren't overly pushy.

Room Tip: Glad I read other reviews about the rooms. The first floor rooms are semi "underground" s...

Thank you very much for your lovely words about our resort. We wish you had stayed longer too! Come back and see us when you are ready for a relaxing beach vacation. You can use our resort as a base to do almost all of the wonderful adventure and nature activities that Costa Rica has to offer. On site we have a full-service spa, a wide range of water sports such as scuba diving, deep sea fishing, wave runners, boogie and surf boards, ATV tours and bike rentals. Our concierge can help you arrange day and evening tours to nearby volcanoes, hot springs, rivers, lakes and forest attractions including canopy tours, rafting and bird- and turtle-watching. Nightlife is pretty quiet in our area during the low "green" season, but there is a lot more going on in our area during the high season of December through April.

We came for our wedding with some family members. We loved this resort. Staff were super nice and we came at a perfect time (16-27 Dec) because the resort wasn't too full of people yet, it was quiet and pleasant and plenty of poolside seating, the beach wasn't overrun with families yet...on the second to last day it started to get much busier so it was a bittersweet good bye! (Not fans of hugely crowded places that is)
Everything the concierge recommended was wonderful.
The breakfast and meals at the hotel (we did breakfast included only option) were great. The pool bar was really handy!! The service on the upstairs bar was a little slow at times, but I think the poor guy was new...
The servers in the downstairs area were great! (I can think of Alex and Rocio and there were two male servers who stood out but now it's crunch time I can't remember their names!)
Augusto at the front desk was wonderful! We had a couple of problems in our room which were fixed promptly (safe battery ran out and fridge stopped working but they were fixed so quickly, you'd never even know!)
Thank you for making our wedding/honeymoon accommodations fabulous!!

Room Tip: Definitely shell out the extra for pool view, you won't be sorry when you're sitting on your...

Travelled in the off season to this quaint hotel located in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. The food at the hotel was average. Then again, don't expect Costa Rica is not necessarily known for its food.

We spent most of the time at the beautiful beach. I'd rank the beach a 4 out of 5 with Turks and Caicos (5 of 5) and Maui (4.5 of 5) slightly higher. The hotel was adequate for our needs. Do not keep your windows open to hear the ocean--which you can do because the hotel is right on the ocean--because you will face the onslaught of mosquitos.

Within walking distance of the hotel is a small bar and this is worth the trip for a drink. For those into fishing one can easily obtain a charter for a reasonable cost.

The pool at the hotel is adequate and clean. The restaurants are clean with adequate, sometimes slow, service. The food is generally bland, except the breakfast is good.

Go to this hotel for the beautiful beach.

We appreciate your taking the time to share your comments regarding your stay at the Flamingo Beach Resort. As we strive to be much more than "average" we are taking your remarks to heart and working hard to be considered "exceptional." Thanks for your feedback. By the way, mosquitoes are only a problem during the rainy months of August thru early November. In the dry season (Dec. to May) they pretty much disappear.

We came to this resort to have our wedding and a family trip all at once. Everyone who came with us to this resort said this was the best trip of their lives and was exactly how they imagined a destination wedding would be. The food and service was outstanding across the board and every day felt like living in paradise.

Juan Carlos (our wedding planner) took care of all the details and made sure we had nothing to worry about. I was truly amazed with the 5-star food, service, decorations, professionalism and friendliness of the staff. Juan Carlos worked with our budget and came up with a wedding that I couldn't have planned better myself – everything was perfect. Our guests had an amazing time and we loved every minute of our special day. Thank you for everything!

Room Tip: Pool view room has everything you'll need for your stay.

Myself and my wife just stayed here... It was truly amazing. The staff was awesome, the food was good(only did breakfast plan), the restaurants near the hotel where awesome. The best thing about this resort is there people. I have to say they are best I have ever dealt with. I have stayed in several resorts in several different countries, and this was the best. Not much to do at night in the hotel, so if you are looking to party, this hotel is not for you, if you want to relax, this resort is for you. The only negative thing is there spa(massage) prices, and there drinks where expensive if you are not in the all-inclusive plan

The hotel is located in a very beautiful and calm beach in Guanacaste province. The breakfast is good but should have more options of bread as it is too mcuh dedicated to americans and not so much to Brazilians. The swimming pool is very good and all guests must take care on the phone bill as they have charged more than US$200,00 wrongly. An 8 minute phone call costed US$50,00! The hotel is 15 minutes far by car from Tamarindo, which is very nice for the dinner and the same distance to Playa Grande, which is too beautiful and where the turtles leave their eggs. The beautifiul Playa Conchal is just few minutes away.

Thank you for submitting your kind review of the Flamingo Beach Resort & Spa. You made a very good point in saying that our food selections are more oriented toward guests from the U.S. and Canada, who along with local Costa Ricans, make up the bulk of our clientele. As we attempt to reach out to more international markets we do need to expand our horizons in that regard, and we totally appreciate your bringing it to our attention so we can do better in the future. We also apologize for any misunderstanding on your telephone bill. The rates are based pm the country's only landline telephone provider, which for many years had a total monopoly. Now Costa Ricans are starting to enjoy lower rates as competitors come in to the cell phone market, but since landlines are still controlled by the government telephone monopoly, international rates can be expensive. We are sorry we did not do a better job of informing you in advance.
