“Great value, great location, great service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2011

We spent three nights at Cabinas Coco Azul and enjoyed it very much. The location is perfect - a couple of minutes from the beach and just as close to the 'main strip' but set in a beautiful, rustic little cul de sac. The surroundings are wonderful, with awesome mango trees inhabited by howler monkeys, and chickens and dogs happily running around creating a real feeling of being amongst the beautiful nature of Costa Rica. The rooms are basic but clean, secure and great value for the money, particularly for Costa Rica. Steve was a wonderful host and bent over backwards to make sure we enjoyed our stay. He took us to a local fisherman to buy cheap seafood and lent us everything we needed to have a BBQ, thanks Steve! One point to note about Playa Coco is that there are many free wifi points but only one expensive internet cafe so bring your own devices if you can. Security is not an issue in Cabana Coco Azul. All in all, we cannot fault this great little find!

this was our last place we stayed.... we were here for a few days.

the beach is not the best, but the place had a great night life. It was VERY Americanized, which was kinda sad.... lot so of local boys following us around.

the hostel itself was pretty good..... the man who owns it was nice enough, did get mad at us for a homeless dog following us home.... we were woken up early every morning by howler monkeys throwing stuff on the tin roofs, which was kinda funny.

Apparently it's the place to go for snorkling.... I never went but I heard it was.....

I would recommend this place...

First off, I want to mention that there are an overwhelmingly abundant supply of places to stay in Coco.
I was greeted by a guy named Steve, an expat of sorts with a seedy disposition and an excessive friendliness. We first were given a room with two separate twin beds, no a/c, a fan, and a fridge. Since this room was priced so modestly ($95 for 3 nights), I inquired about a room with an a/c. He put me in another room, with a matrimonial bed as he calls it, a small kitchenette, fridge, and a/c unit. He threw in with self-proclaimed generosity a small tv. This was at a price of $140 for 3 nights. Now, the rooms are decent, but not at this price. Yes, it had a kitchenette, but all truly uninspiring.
Here is a list of the things that went wrong:
* Lack of maintenance, there were ants crawling all over the room, clearly they had eaten their way through walls and grout.
Handles were busted, missing light switch plates, patch work, I can't remember all the details
* A/C busted. The cheap A/C unit was extremely noisy, in addition, it leaked an entire lake of water in our room, as well as barely cooled the room. When I brought this to Steve's attention he said he would call someone to fix right away, and never offered to reduce or return money that we were paying extra for the service. Repair never came and according to a Danish girl that had been staying there for months, a phony promise he had been making for quite some time.
*no cleaning of room/no offer of toilet paper/towels
*Very Loud Club music at night
*Power went out, final straw, and asked for money back
Check out "The Beach House" up the street, very cheap, no reservation needed, very clean, and owned by *gasp* a Costa Rican!!
P.S. Whoever Ray is, is not there anymore.

We stayed there with my girlfriend for 11 days in the end of July 2010. From the very beginning, Steve (the owner) was very helpful and friendly, and offered us a good discount for a small one bedroom apartment.

We had a fully equipped kitchen (which only lacked one or two basic things that we could easily buy at one of the three nearby supermarkets), our own bathrom with bathtub and towels, and a big bedroom with one double bed, one single bed and most importantly, AC ;).

Unfortunately, there was no wifi connection, but we could sometimes pick the network of a neighbor, which was freely accessible.

The hotel is 2 minutes away from the beach, in a quiet street away from the noise of all the bars on the main street (but only 5 minutes by foot from them).

When we arrived at Cabinas Coco Azul, we were given a friendly and warm welcome by owner and manager Steve. He was very nice and helpful, and gave us a lot of good advice and tips, ex. where to eat really good food etc. The rooms were good size, clean and comfortable. Every room has a small patio outside, and there is also a nice little garden where you can enjoy a cold bebido under the shade of the mango trees. Coco Azul is located on a quiet small street, close to the beach (2min walk). Steve made us feel really at home there. Would definately stay again, and would recommend. Anna

we spent a week last april in costa rica for my sisters wedding.
our entire stay was booked at cabinas coco azul.
when we arrived frankly we were surprised at the location.
a little hard to find the first time.
but, the rooms were adequate especially for the price.
located close to the main drag through town.
Ray makes the experience worth while.
excellent customer service.
amazingly helpful.
saved us over $300 on a fishing trip.
super friendly, and went way out of his way to make sure everything was perfect.
dont pass this up.
just remember no matter what happens Ray will take care of you.

Ray is probably one of the best hotel managers I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I've stayed in many places from dingy backpacker dorms to 5 star resorts, and Ray exemplifies what a hotel manager should be, no matter the price of the resort. I forgot my alarm clock at home, and wasn't able to get cell phone reception, so Ray knocked on my door when I needed to wake up to make the dive boat. He will give you a 20 minute introduction to the town with a map, and will point you to the best restaurants, atm, and nightlife so that your trip is the best it can possibly be.

In need of some advice on where to find the best Tico food in town? Need to figure out the best operator to dive with, or someone who can recommend a night club that's bumping out reggaeton and full of cute girls? Ray is the man in town to ask for any advice at all. (Seriously, sit and have a drink with the man, and he'll keep you enthralled with his stories for hours.)

The hotel has recently been painted, and looks fantastic. There is a mango and a manga tree in the little courtyard. My room was the largest I have ever stayed in at a budget accommodation, so I had ample space to spread out my dive gear and underwater camera. Coco Azul is close enough to the Hotel Coco Palms, which has a fantastic liquor/snack/odds and ends shop attached (1 L of Imperial ran about 1200 Colones). Coco Azul is only a couple blocks to the beach, as well as the downtown area. I felt that I was very safe the whole time I was there, and had no problem leaving a couple thousand dollars worth of dive equipment in my room while hitting up the restaurants and bars at night.

Stay here, and you're in for a great time. I would definitely recommend to friends, and I plan on heading back there sometime very soon.
