“Great location, horrible restaurant service, bit overpriced”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

Overall great location in the center of the city near the beach, bars, and restaurants. The service at the restaurant was very poor, but it didn't ruin our trip at all. Not a great place for a family, especially if your room is near the pool, but its great for the location to the nightlife and beach. Good value, maybe a little over priced.

Positives - This hotel has the best location in town it is nearby a lot of restaurants and bars that my girlfriend and I enjoyed quite a bit during our stay, some good seafood options and fun bars with happy hour from 11:30am til 7:30pm (Zi Lounge). It is also a few hundred meters away from the beach which is a dirty sand beach, but functions enough to chill in the water during the heat of the day. Room was clean when we arrived and cleaned pretty well while we were there. Front desk was attentive to what we needed from them and spoke good English. Shower good water pressure. TV gets an HBO channel in English and CNN International in English, but most everything else is in Spanish only.

Negatives - The biggest problem was the breakfast service which was touted as free, but ended up being $3.00 most days (no big deal) if only the service was anything remotely normal. The three mornings we had breakfast it took about 20 minutes to get coffee and usually, as other reviewers said it was a big ordeal getting utensils, napkins, butter/jam, and other basic items. There always seemed to be enough staff available to handle these basics, but each day we had breakfast it was the same issues over and over again. One night there were some very loud people hanging out outside our door at a picnic bench, but based on the location I thought that was to be expected. It would have been nice to have a exhaust fan in the bathroom, a fridge, a bit nicer towels for the pool, better water pressure in the sink which was horrible, and of course better service at the restaurant.

Room Tip: Sink has poor water pressure. Restaurant has horrible service. Bring bigger towels for beach.

This hotel is beautifully located but the staff overall leaves a lot more to be desired.

Front desk: they are more interested in booking your tour and getting commission than giving you service. If you crossed them and booked tour yourselves they get vicious. Then the phone calls get routed wrong. They stopped understanding your English.

Cafe: Continental Breakfast was free, but you pay $3 for typical (Costa Rican, traditional). There is no one to greet you and lead you to your table, you sit on available table, and wait, which could be any where from 5 min to 20 min. The service not poor but horrible: they give you coffee but no sugar or cream. Many a time, i had to go upto front desk and get it myself. They give you toast but no butter or Jam. if you ask, you will need to wait for 15 min by the time, your toast & coffee are cold.
Food in general is over priced in the hotel. Walking distance you can find better options.

Rooms: are small and very tight. Bathrooms do not have exhaust fan, so the whole room stinks if someone just used the toilet. No hairdryer, no microwave. The TV room moves one channel up or down, you can not choose by number.

Room Tip: Rooms away from beach or restaurant are quieter comparatively. During our stay they had performance...

The hotel is near bars and the music goes full blast all night. The food at their restaurant is terrible and the service is worse. The small pool was cloudy and filthy. The lounge chair cushions were ripped and dirty. The ceiling in the hallways were stained and peeling. This is not a place for children due to the high amount of drugs present. We left two days early due to constant marijuana fumes.

Room Tip: Go further down the coast to find better hotels.

We stayed there last year for a couple nights and were very happy with our experience, so we decided to stay again (although we had rented a car and could have stayed in a less central location). However, in 12 months time the place has changed. No real ""big"" issues, but many details that make a huge difference: 1) Some tourists (US) came back at the middle of the night, drunk, as it often happens at the beach; they were talking very loud in front, laughing and shouting of the front desk area for over 45 minutes. None of the staffs asked them to keep quiet, although there are guards there and I assume there must be someone on duty. Our night was over. 2) Staff at breakfast was not nice and not concerned on providing a friendly and efficient customer service, they just stayed behind their counter and you had to chase them. Breakfast itself was "OK" but not brought as ordered (no juice etc), although we choose breakfasts that required to pay extra $ and included these extra items. 3) Staff at front desk was OK but not very customer service oriented either and it sems we were bothering them when asking a few questions. It his is a pity, the place has a great location if you want to be in town for a couple nights, walk to restaurants etc. Last year we thought service was quite personalized (Although you obviously don't expect the service of a Four Seasons!!), this year it seemed like if a different organization had taken the hotel over and didn't have much idea about the hospitality business. They may think a good location is enough; in fact it is not.

This hotel is part of a very large (for the area) complex consisting of a full-service restaurant, two quick-serve restaurants and an ice cream parlor, some souvenir shops and a seedy casino with a bar called the "Sloppy Pelican." The location is right in the center of Coco Beach, which is either good or bad depending upon your perspective. This is a definite party spot, with loud parties that could happen every night until after 3 in the morning. You are right in the center of the action if this is what appeals to you, but if you're looking for a good night's sleep, you won't find it here. It is a short walk to Playa del Coco, which isn't bad, but is not one of the nicer beaches in the area. It helps to have a car to beach-hop, which I definitely recommend--there are some really beautiful beaches in the area and they are all public!

We called and were offered a special rate for a standard room. The rate wasn't initially honored, but we finally settled on a rate $5 more than we were quoted. This included breakfast (toast, fruit and coffee--a paid upgrade is available if you want something more substantial), which was surprisingly subpar for the area. Guanacaste has some of the most amazing fruit in the world, but two days in a row we were served sour strawberries and tired starfruit. There was no variety in the breakfast, it was identical (and identically below expectations) both days.

The pool area is very clean, with a nice view overlooking the main street. Our room was equipped with an old tube TV, two beds (one of which had a squeaky mattress frame), and a closet. One of the power outlets was hanging loose from the wall, a little scary but it somehow still worked. The bathroom had no outlet for an electric shaver, and the room was not equipped with a refrigerator either. However, the room did have a coffeemaker, and free in-room coffee is provided. Tap water is safe to drink and two drinking glasses were provided, and there is an ice machine near the casino at the far end of the pool area.

Parking was free, although it's in a dirt parking lot that is often full. A security guard works all night and promptly approached us to ensure we weren't stealing from cars when we behaved suspiciously. He asked for a tip, but we politely pretended not to hear and he didn't do anything bad to the car.

WiFi is free, but only works in the reception area and the poo/restaurant. The service is actively censored and I was unable to reach a less common IT site (for some reason, the filtering proxy thought it was a porn site) but common services work correctly. The door to the bathroom also didn't work properly; the lock was jammed.

The one bright spot was service. The front desk service was friendly and attentive. The room was cleaned and serviced for a two-night stay, with towels (but not linens) and cosmetics replenished each day. However, the shower was none too clean.

Overall, for a hotel that alternatively bills itself as 3-star and 4-star, an average rating is exceedingly generous. I do think that the owners are trying hard (we were given a survey at check-out), and this could be a solid 1 1/2 star property. Setting the right expectations (and taking care of a few maintenance issues) would go a long way toward higher ratings.

Room Tip: The basic rooms aren't great; a superior room may be worth the upgrade.

Great stay. Great staff and very helpful. The location is the best. I planned a last minute trip to Playas del Coco for my wife's birthday. Andrea and Francisco of the front office were very good at assisting me with my last minute arrangements. Although I never met Andrea or Francisco, we were kindly greeted by Deyvis at the front desk. Deyvis was a great guy and seemed as if he would do anything to make sure we had the best time. The room was clean and nice enough. The showers were hot and the A.C. was freezing cold like we preferred it. Besides, we were only in the room to shower and sleep. The hotel is about a 3-5 minute walk from the beach, but it is smack dab in the middle of all the attractions and nightlife that is in this village. We definitely enjoyed the hotels restaurant, The Casa del Mar. So I stamp an approval on the meals, drinks, and service. They have a continental breakfast, but my wife and I would recommend the delicious American breakfast. It comes with eggs, bacon, and potatoes that are seasoned by the Gods. Carlos who works in the restaurant was very friendly and knowledgeable of everything in the surrounding area. He was even able to help me find a bar that would be airing a championship boxing event that I couldn't miss. The front desk can assist you with any excursion or adventure that you choose and may even get you a better rate. We are very satisfied with our experience here. Have a great trip fellow trip advisee!

There are only a few options in Coco Beach so in saying that this place has a good dollar value... the nicer hotels are double the price atleast and not as centrally located.... the casino and is dingy and did not feel like a place for a foreigner to spend time in.... the sports bar across the street Cocnutz was a really fun and comfortable environment.... sure stay here if you are going to Coco Beach but don't expect much and you wont be disappointed.
